I'm having a great time with seasons past in pioneer. I would love to hear from anyone else playing the deck. Saffron Olive played a stream with the deck a few days ago if anyone wants to see how it plays.
This is one of the decks I am looking into playing in pioneer. I think I'll rent a list on modo and give it a spin before making a decision.
One question though, why murderous rider over hero's downfall. The 2 life should be relivant because your trying to extend the game so long. Plus it doesn't synergize with seasons past?
I've tried hero's downfall and may go back to it. It's often not wrong to cast the creature against aggressive strategies. The lifelink can really make a difference, but you may be right.
That's understandable, just having a 2/3 lifelink is great vs aggro. I guess my only qualm with it would be that against most other archetypes you're usually casting the spell half first. In those matches if you were to you cast the creature it would most likely die because you've been blanking the majority of your opponents removal the entire game. In essance you've traded 2 life for a dead card in your opponents hand.
I can see it connecting in the post sideboard games when your opponent takes out most removal. I guess it's still technically 2 for 1 if your opponent removes it, which is good.
That is definitely a valid point. The majority of my losses are to big mana strategies, superfriends, and aggro. Control is tough right now because the meta is so open. Hopefully some people more intelligent than me will get into this deck.
There are a ton of playable cards and flex slots for this deck. So what's the “core“? Season's Past & Dark Petition. Besides that you can play just any form of removal/ discard/ card advantage/ finishers imo. I'm building a Vraska themed version right now. I also don't think you MUST play Thoughtseize just because it's the best 1 mana discard spell. The 2 life loss are relevant! But that's just my 2 cents. What you all are thinking?
Nissa, is really good. It does everything this deck wants to do. I’ve been considering splitting Thoughtseize with despise. I’m going to try a 2/2 split I think.
I’d be interested in your Vraska list. There’s also an Abzan list that’s getting results. abzan charm is the main payoff.
Vraska seems good to end games quickly. Get your opponent into an unwinnable gamestate, ultimate her and then attack with a man land. I don't really like the idea of sacrificing lands early because the decks so mana hungry. Still it seems like a powerful late game walker, at a good cmc.
I think Despise is good call for a split and definitely maindeck playable. My list isn't complete yet, but i test Vraska, Golgari Queen , Vraska the Unseen & Vraska, Relic Seeker atm.
I think we can be more midrangy with creatures like Tireless Tracker & Courser of Kruphix for example. Or more controlly with a bunch of sweepers and less creatures.
Abzan charm seems fun. I thought about splashing blue for sultai charm but decide to stay bg for consistency.
Yeah i think this deck should play some amount of PWs. I even saw one list playing Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
Yeah, I watched a video of that on YouTube, it seemed great. The deck was piloted by Ali Aintrazi, ended up 3 - 2 I believe. Some notable includes were traverse the ulvenwald, which helped hit your land drops early and could tutor murderous rider / walking ballista late. It was also playing Ugin the Spirit Dragon, which came in clutch in a couple matches.
I think when I build this I'll start there first. This deck is going to miss veil of summer, having your seasons past countered feels brutal. Discard will have to be enough.
I watched that too. I'm not sold on Traverse the Ulvenwald so far but maybe it's better than i give it credit for.
For Delerium Fabled Passage could be relevant.
Worst case we could use Autumn's Veil to protect us against counters.
I was surprised not to see more PW's in this deck besides the flip Nissa.
I think planeswalkers are a great addition. I’ve tried 1-3 planeswalkers at a time. The question really is which planeswalkers are going to stabilize and then maintain the advantage. ugin, the spirit dragon does that so I may play one, but if I hit 8 mana I can start looping seasons past. Ugin does give you another threat in the face of counters too.
One major issue I’ve yet to solve is bonecrusher giant. The card is very difficult to deal with because it trades or outright kills almost every creature I have access to. Then the stomp and/or target clause is another 2:1 or 3:1. The deck could up the target player sacrifices a creature effects I suppose. Discard is a good option but I’m already running 6 effects. The only problem with that strategy is the GR Aggro decks run so many creatures they can usually sacrifice a dork.
Any advice for bonecrusher or RG aggressive strategies in general?
Tangress the Mind seems good. Also Collective Brutality is worth to mention.
I personaly don't like Ugin with the high cmc. Otherwise Ob Nixilis Reignited gives card advantage.
Against Bonecrusher Giant - Wasteland Strangler seems hilarious effective against those type of aggro decks.
I'll make a list with playable cards for this deck. Maybe someone should make a real Primer at some point, or a thread on Discord.

and you can even add The Gitrog Monster to the deck.
It'd work well to get more triggers out of Tracker.

im up to 6 discard spells. I noticed the decks posted on mtggoldfish run transgress the mind. So I added one.
