Affinity as a whole is an aggro-combo based archtype with a splash of control that relies on cheap or free creatures to swarm the field and attack, attack, attack! Pauper Affinity relies on nothing but the power of common cards to fight its way to victory!
Basics of Pauper Affinity
In order for Affinity to work properly you will need cards that have the "Affinity for artifacts" ability which allows them in most cases to be played for free or almost free, such as the case with Frogmite and Myr Enforcer, even your coveted draw spell Thoughtcast requires artifacts to be played for cheap. However some cards just require there to be mass amounts of artifacts on the field in order to be useful like with Cranial Plating and Atog. So almost everything in the deck must be an artifact in order to make the deck function properly. All of your lands must be artifact lands as-well with the exception of 1 or 2 occasionally when you are going color heavy in one direction.
So in short your general rule of play should be,
#1 Play lots and lots of artifacts
#2 Play lots and lots of free things
#3 ??????
#4 Profit
What you will need to win
The below cards are rated by my opinion of usefulness, opinions will vary.
Tree of Tales - This is really the "weakest" of the artifact lands and is only really needed if you play something like Carapace Forger, but honestly why would you when Auriok Sunchaser is way better.
Creatures
Frogmite - Pretty self explanatory why this creature should be an auto include.
Myr enforcer - Same reason as above, these are your bread and butter free creatures.
Vault Skirge - An excellent creature that can be played for 1 mana, and get your life back easily and even more with Cranial Plating attached.
Auriok Sunchaser - A nice 3/3 body with flying, that's pretty good.
Atog - This guy is an eventual beater with his self pump ability and as a target for Fling he just wrecks your opponents life.
Disciple of the vault - This guy has to be run with Atog as their abilities work with eachother, you pump Atog, they lose life and then you fling the Atog at them after he swings.
Glaze Fiend - Basically the Kiln Fiend of Affinity, can be very dangerous because of all the free artifacts you can play.
Somber Hoverguard - A potentially free 3/2 flyer, what's not to love?
Quicksilver Behemoth - This guy is basically just a single turn block or attack, then redrop kind of creature, he is ok as he is a 4/5 body but I honestly don't really like him.
Non-creature Artifacts
Springleaf drum - One of the best artifacts used in Affinity decks as it turns any creature into a mana generator.
Cranial plating - This card pumps the crap out of any creature in affinity, the fact that can move it from creature to creature for 2 black mana during combat is ridiculous. This card is on the Magic Online ban list, so if your playgroup plays with that then obviously this card is non-usable. Normally the card is legal for paper play.
Rain of Embers - Mass creature damage, excellent against gobo or anything aggro.
Sample deck lists
XBM Yosho's Pauper aggro Affinity
This uses every combination of tricks to bust your opponents in the mouth, fast free creatures, extreme pump, self sacrifice and throw it all at them!
Aggro:
This is where Affinity shines, because Affinity itself is an aggro deck but isn't completely reliant on getting its mana drops. We can drop creatures for free half of the time so we are usually ahead of the curve. This should be a favorable match up for Affinity.
Control:
This is a bad match up for Affinity as we are very dependent on our artifacts to pump, give mana, remove or anything. If we lose a Cranial Plating and don't have an Atog to Fling we are going to struggle. We have to hit hard and fast otherwise it usually doesn't pan out well.
Combo:
This is about 50/50. Affinity is combo, it is aggro, it really depends on who gets what off the fastest. If we are facing something like storm then we have to sideboard in order to be competitive.
Peasant Affinity
Introduction to Peasant Affinity
Affinity as a whole is an aggro-combo based archtype with a splash of control that relies on cheap or free creatures to swarm the field and attack, attack, attack! Peasant Affinity similar to that of Pauper Affinity relies on the power of common cards with the addition of up to 5 uncommon cards to fight its way to victory!
Basics of Peasant Affinity
In order for Affinity to work properly you will need cards that have the "Affinity for artifacts" ability which allows them in most cases to be played for free or almost free, basically all of your common cards have that area under control. The uncommon cards you can use such as Paradise Mantle gives you a nice advantage because you can play this guy for free, which fuels your mana fixing and affinity properties but also lets you remove now dead weight cards such as Springleaf Drum.
So in short your general rule of play should be,
#1 Play lots and lots of artifacts
#2 Play lots and lots of free things

What you will need to win
Creatures
Memnite Possibly a nice replacement for ornithopter as he starts with 1 power, or just another additional creature for free.
Non-creature Artifacts
Paradise Mantle An amazing card for Peasant Affinity, this should be in my opinion a 2-3 include.
Demonic Tutor If you are playing with Cranial Plating you normally run 1-2 black mana in addition to your artifact lands so this card is a fantastic include for guaranteed do what you want when you want ability. If you cannot afford it, it doesn't really change the pace of the game but it really is a nice inclusion.
Aether Vial If you can afford it and are running a creature heavy Affinity, this card is a champ and playing more stuff for free is awesome!
Skullclamp Basic pump and eventual card draw, nothing wrong with that.
Sensei's Divining Top This card is excellent if you want to fix your upcoming draw, normally though I feel this card isn't worth while as a 4 of as it is easily over shadowed by better cards.
Tinker Not a bad card if you have something in your deck you need right away, I wouldn't put 4 in, but maybe 2 main board.
Fabricate I feel this card is strictly worse then Tinker do to the fact both do basically the same thing, but with this card you don't put the card in play, with the other card yes you sac an artifact but it replaces itself immediately.
Sol Ring Normally this is a nice card for Affinity, but since you are limited to what you can use in Peasant this takes the back seat unless you really want more mana for some reason that I am not aware of.

Nice Primer! I had always thought that Pauper affinity was in part Green for Carapace Forger. Is this not popular anymore? Is it because splashing white for Auriok Sunchaser is just better? I would think the Forger is pretty good because he's just bigger, but maybe the evasion makes all the difference.
What about Lotus Petal? Seems like it could be a good way to get fast mana of any colour! It could allow for even more explosive plays.
Would Memnite be good? He's free to play and actually puts power on the board. Not as good as Ornithopter, but it could be used in conjunction with it.
Oh, and I think you made a small typo. In the peasant section, you have the matchup written as "Pauper affinity match up breakdown".

Carapace Forger is just a 4/4, granted if you played some pump with him he would be rather large, but he is easily chump blocked. Now you could throw the suggestion of Rancor for the trample, but you would be taking away another artifact to put that in. He is an alright creature, but the evasion really does make the difference and an extra 1/1 doesn't really matter if you are flinging other things.
I overlooked Lotus Petal, I will add that in into the primer. The only thing I dislike about it even though it is free, is that it only has a single use and then it's gone. So that is one less artifact for Cranial Plating and Atog.
Thanks for the typo catch, I copy and pasted the Peasant section from the Pauper and missed that lol.. Lazy me
EDIT: I had memnite in the primer already under Peasant
just curious under peasant why you would swap out springleaf drum for paradise mantle? They both cost 1 before you can use them, but springleaf can be used turn 1 where mantle can't be used until at earliest turn 2. Also the drum can switch which creature you tap for free and lets you just tap your freshly played guy for an extra mana, which mantle can't do for a multitude of reasons. I'd say use Paradise mantle as Springleaf drums 5-8. If I were to run it as a peasant deck I'd go 4 skullclamps if ever thought I'd find even one person who would be foolish enough to play me, or more practically I'd go for 3 Aether vial and 2 memnite as my uncommons.

Honestly the main reasoning behind it was to simply have free artifacts to drop to power Cranial Plating after a Thoughtcast, the mana fixing of the card itself was an afterthought. I wanted to make sure I had two black mana at all times to move it from creature to creature during the combat phase.
I'm confused... Isn't Cranial Platting banned in pauper?
As it is stated in the rules thread the card is banned in the Magic Online version of the game. The rules do not apply to the paper version of this game unless your playgroup says otherwise, so under normal circumstances the card is completely legal for play.
(Once again, these banned cards are for Magic Online and may or may not be in effect at your local tournament. Normally they're no banned cards in the paper version.)
I'm a big fan of your Atog/Disciple deck in the primer. I just bought all the necessary cards to complete it. I have nothing to add, I'm just psyched. It should be a great step up from my "Of Monsters and Myr" walking bomb deck that's been fizzling on me lately. I'll probably convert that deck into a non-pauper and add in Despotic Scepter and Abyssal Persecutor.

Yea that deck is a big step up from the other one with Somber Hoverguard and what not, the amount of damage it produces plus life gain, and sneaky switch-a-roo cards like Cranial Plating are hilarious when they block one and then BAM it's on another lol.
Wouldn't Pentad Prism be a good choice for multicolor decks? Not only does it make 5 mana available by turn three, but it stays on the field to power up Cranial and generally help with affinity, and can be Atog food in a pinch.
That card seems very useful for speeding the deck up for a single turn, but after that it becomes useful aside from being food for Atog and Cranial Plating.
It is in direct competition for slots with Chromatic Sphere, Chromatic Star, Prophetic Prism and Springleaf Drum. All of these are better in the long haul because they either constantly fix mana, grant mana from creature tapping or replace themselves after being used.
I may have to do some testing with it to see how it plays out compared to the other options.

That ban list only applies to the official MTGO Pauper format, but it doesn't really apply to the paper game unless your local store chooses to use it. That being said Cranial Plating doesn't really need to be included to make the deck but it surely helps. If you want to alter the deck to work around it I can help with that.
I'm guessing the extra point of power and toughness is more important against decks with tons of removal (MBC) or flying creatures (Delver deck). Carapace goes through a Spire Golem, sunchaser does not.

I agree, normally Auriok Sunchaser would be the choice but perhaps depending on the meta Carapace Forger's extra point of power and toughness are enough to warrant the use of him.
I personally prefer my version of the deck though.
As far as Terrarion is concerned, it fixes two mana and grants card draw, so I can see the benefits.
So I have been playing an unoptimal version of this focusing on equipments and cheap/free creatures (pauper version below) and I wanted to know if this could be upgraded without adding red. The reason I have tended to like this deck is because of the crushing ability to gain 4+ life turn 2 with vault skirge, which tends to be game against opposing aggro. Runed Servitor is weak but it draws a card and is on curve, and this deck runs out of steam fast.
Hi folks, I'm updating some of my Legacy Pauper lists, and Affinity is first on the block. My current plan is a mix of the current MTGO lists and Yosho's Plating list above.
14 sources of Blue/Red are at the low end of where I want to be for the 8 mana symbols in each color in the deck. I like the 8 evasive creatures for Plating, as well as 6 beefy beaters (4/4 or bigger) and 10 card-drawing spells. I wish I could fit more of all those, and might sacrifice the two Battle Rages to get there (probably -2 Rage, +1 Prism, +1 Skirge).
Questions: I'm debating whether the Prisms should be Swiftwater Cliffs for independent mana fixing at the expense of Affinity and card advantage. I know Bonesplitter is usually Flayer Husk in the MTGO lists, and I might end up there, but I for now I want more power, and I don't have Perilous Research to feed Germs to.
Yeah this is "Legacy all-commons" (i.e. no Gush). Btw when I post my Infect list with Invigorate, same thing.
Serpent is great except for UU in a deck with few colored sources and even fewer permanent ones. For now I'm only using two copies though some successful lists run four. Speaking of evasion, I guess Battle Rage also negates blockers with Trample. A deck 4 Serpents and 3 Islands to help cast them might be better than what I have now though. I'll just have to test a bit.
I know you mentioned it, but Flayer Husk is such a good card in affinity. Free body to chump/edict and getting your beaters to 5/5 is super relevant. Every Pauper Affinity player should be running those, imo. Hypocritically, I should update my own list in my Paper Pauper Battle Bag!
To address the 5/5 thing, only Enforcer can use it to dodge Flame Slashes and the like. I don't run any 3-butts that Husk would make bolt-proof. There is relevance to making Ornithopter and Frogmite avoid -2 effects like Dead Weight though. I'll consider running it over Bonesplitters especially if I increase serpent count. With 7-8 4-power creatures and 4 Platings in the deck, the extra 1 power should be negligible.
Any thoughts on adding basic Islands to help support 4 Serpents? Something like:

Lands
Seat of Synod - This is a must have in the deck because of Thoughtcast.
Vault of Whispers - If playing with either Cranial Plating or Disciple of the Vault this is also a much have.
Great Furnace - Atog, Fling, and Galvanic blast require this card so an inclusion is needed.
Darksteel Citadel - This should be in any affinity deck, it is plain old simple colorless mana that cannot go away.
Ancient Den - If playing with Auriok Sunchaser this would be good to have.
Tree of Tales - This is really the "weakest" of the artifact lands and is only really needed if you play something like Carapace Forger, but honestly why would you when Auriok Sunchaser is way better.
Frogmite - Pretty self explanatory why this creature should be an auto include.
Myr enforcer - Same reason as above, these are your bread and butter free creatures.
Ornithopter - Free, simple 0/2 flying body. You just equipped him with Cranial Plating? Oh crap...

Quicksilver Behemoth - This guy is basically just a single turn block or attack, then redrop kind of creature, he is ok as he is a 4/5 body but I honestly don't really like him.
Prophetic Prism - Card draw and mana fixing.
Lotus Petal - A free artifact and a single piece of free mana, the only draw back being once it's used it's gone.
Chromatic Sphere - Same card as below.
Chromatic Star - Same card as above.
Nihil Spellbomb - Useful against anything graveyard oriented, IE: Zombies.
Ichor Wellspring - Artifact card draw when it comes in, and upon sacrificing to Atog.
Thoughtcast - The best card draw in Pauper Affinity.
Glavanic Blast - Pretty important card to clear the path or finish off an opponent.
Fling - Useful only if playing with Atog or Cranial Plating, if you are this should be an auto include.
Disenchant - Excellent basic removal.
Standard Bearer - Use this if playing against things like Infect.
Hydroblast - Only good against burn variants or gobo.
Pyroblast - Only good against MUC variants.
Rain of Embers - Mass creature damage, excellent against gobo or anything aggro.

Where is this legal and banned?
Local store is doing pauper and did a small blurp on the forums to describe it. He also added:
"The Pauper banned list is:
Cranial Plating
Empty the Warrens
Frantic Search
Grapeshot
Invigorate"
I buy HP and Damaged cards!
Only EDH:
Sigarda, Host of Herons: Enchantress' Enchantments
Jenara, Asura of War: ETB Value Town
Purphoros, God of the Forge: Global Punishment
Xenagos, God of Revels: Ramp, Sneak, & Heavy Hitters
Ghave, Guru of Spores: Dies_to_Doom_Blade's stax list
Edric, Spymaster of Trest: Donald's list
That ban list only applies to the official MTGO Pauper format, but it doesn't really apply to the paper game unless your local store chooses to use it. That being said Cranial Plating doesn't really need to be included to make the deck but it surely helps. If you want to alter the deck to work around it I can help with that.

Any suggestions?
2) Use the right number of each card.
3) Know your probabilities.
4) Print your deck lists; make yourself and your judges happier.
The Serpent is a great addition to the list! It's tough to deal with and has a built in evasion!
