I think 14 soldiers is plenty considering people are unlikely to waste removal on a used Icatian Soldiers and Loyal Cathar takes two hits to remove. However, even if it can't attack, it still trades with Delver
Anyway, it turns out the group DON'T use the rules I assumed at all - all cards printed as paper commons are also OK, with the exception of the added bans of Hymn, Sinkhole, Goblin Grenade and High Tide. The biggest effect this has IMO is that Desert is legal, and that's pretty huge. Almost any deck can include 2-3 Desert, which in turn suddenly makes cards like War Falcon and Porcelain Legionnaire very bad offensive options.
This has made me rethink the deck entirely and the idea of Rebels came to mind. Imagine running 4x Desert in a shell that can both make use of colorless mana end of turn (because obviously, people won't actually attack into Desert, so you'd better use the mana to not get behind) AND complement the deserts with tutorable Zealot il-Vec, among other things of course. Then we'd also use strong white instants like Celestial Flare, Guardian's Pledge, Prismatic Strands and Unmake - a deck that basically works at instant speed altogether. Could this be an interesting avenue to explore do you think, or should I just work a couple of Desert into a regular WW shell that is more "Desert proof"?
