So, the chance of getting the same five-drop is 1/958, for any given game. (The chance of it being Pride of Lions specifically is one in 958^2, but there's nothing special about that card in particular.)
There's also nothing special about five-drops in particular. How many creatures are there in other CMC's? If you assume there are about 1000 in every slot (which isn't anywhere near correct, of course), then you'd have a roughly 1/1000 shot on any particular turn of getting a match, assuming you play a dude and your opponent has a same-cost dude on the field. I don't play Momir, so I don't know how many times this would come up, but I'm guessing it happens a few time. Let's say five times. So there's maybe a 5/1000, or 0.5% chance this happens in any game.
Soo..... while that math is a very rough guess, it's pretty darn rare. If you play a few hundred games, good chance it will happen at some point (in the first few turns. In later turns, I'm guessing this is not completely uncommon, right?)

I guess this happens more often than I thought. Either the random function is not working right, or I'm experiencing that much coincidences. Because this just happened again, in a game I'm playing right now. But now, for CMC = 8 AND 9.

Well, it's not too surprising for 8 or 9.
There are 103 creatures with CMC=8. This would mean the chance of a match on 8-drops is about 1% each game. So, if you play Momir regularly, it's going to happen.
8 and 9 drops is pretty unusual by itself, that would happen once in every 3,000 tries. But that's just 8+9 specifically. It could have been 9 and 10, or 7 and 8, or 5 and 8, or any number of odd combinations. So, if you play a decent number of games, you're bound to see something unusual pop up every now and then. Make sense?

It's actually more complicated than this, since many cards have been reprinted. Because of this, there's more than 103 possibilities for CMC=8 and not all creatures have the same chance.

that's definitely not true on momir. it's not like ornithopter has 10 different iterations that have a chance of being gotten - just one.
I don't think the game counts repeated creatures from different editions... First, they only put creatures with card frames from the most recent released edition on MTGO, and second, that would be an inconsistency. Grizzly Bears and Grizzly Bears are the same creature.

The ones from non-online sets don't count, so 5 chances, among which are 2 different arts.
Momir, iirc, allows for every single creature, even the ones not released. Also, I've gotten a few creatures more than once and their token form always looks the same so it suggests that reprinting does not affect it, which makes sense.
Something similar happened to me a while back. It was either a five-drop or a six-drop, but it was a legendary creature. I can't remember which, but I think it was from Kamigawa.
momir only counts each creature once, no matter number of times printed. If you want to prove this just go into the solitare room and make 0 drops. There's still a 1/10 chance of hitting dryad arbor not 1/20. Momir doesn't allow for every single creature only ones on MODO. THe times where it's making stupid creatures was when they were put on MODO as a promo and never used. Khabal ghoul for over a year comes to mind.
Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Yeah some weird stuff can come up in momir. In a recent daily I played I got trench gorger in 5 of my games. One of which I lost because of that stupid 8 mana leviathan that stops non flying/island walk.

At first I didn't know what happened.
I don't always post about Rafiq of the Many, but when I do, I cardlink to the original artwork, and not the supplementary product version.
"I trust myself to do my duty, even unto death. It's what comes after that I'm afraid of."
"Just fight without fear. Your soul is protected by the hand of Avacyn and will never submit to evil."
Don't remember what the card was, but it wasn't very good, something like a 5/5 trample.
Thanks to Rivenor for the art.
