Are you like me where you have an odd number of friends who want to play magic? Are you tired of having to sit someone out for a game or play an unbalanced free for all? Well, I have created a variant that fixes all these problems. It's called "Predator". While the game is intended for odd number of players, it can be played the same way with even numbers too!
The idea for the game came from playing with my two best friends. Play a FFA with 3 players is horrendous, where as at least with 5 players it can play out decently. With 3 players, usually two players duke it out until one dies, and during that time the idle player has been building a massive army to win the game with. Well, fear not, for this game mode not only fixes that, but takes a new turn with the game and how it is played.
Rules and Gameplay
The game is simple. Each player has one person they are responsible for killing, and one person responsible for killing them. Whoever kills their target first is the winner. Alternatively, if you have more than 3 players, you can keep going to determine second and third place. If you have six players, you can even play "Two Head Predator" which is Predator combined with the rules of two headed giant. (Basically, each team has another team they are responsible for killing, and one team responsible for killing them.)
The game can be played in any format you desire, be it modern, standard, etc. Any rules regarding the deck and the cards inside of it are determined by your chosen format.
The game starts with all of the players preferably rolling a d20. Among those numbers, the highest number attacks the second highest number, the second highest attacks the third highest, and so on. The lowest number has to attack the highest number. If any two or more players tie a roll, only those players have to re-roll.
At this point, the person who had the highest roll gets to choose whether to go first, or draw first. if they elect to draw first, they would go second and the person who would go last gets to go first.
While you are responsible for killing an individual, you are not restricted from attacking/casting spells on other players at all.
This game mode spices up traditional magic in a number of ways. I personally have had a time where the person attacking me used a sorcery to give health to the person I was attacking so that he had more time to attack me. It keeps you guessing and sometimes forces you to avert your attention from your target to the person your target is attacking so that they don't win. I've had people who weren't my target AND weren't the person hunting me murder my creatures so I wouldn't win. It's really fascinating and opens up a lot of new strategies.
That's all there is to it! I really hope you guys like the idea. Be sure to leave feedback!
