just a little something I been thinking about..
could use feedback..
its a best out of 9 game
(1vs1)
make a pile with 27 creatures
make a pile with 18 auras (for your guy only)
make a pile with 9 effects (instants and/or sorceries)
keep all piles seperate.. shuffle each pile
for each "battle" you flip 3 creature cards and 2 auras this becomes your monster. all power/toughness stack and all effects are active..
there is no mana in this game so stuff like (R: +1/+0 does not work.. unless you want to add like seething song to your effects but thats kinda weak)
so after you flip your 3 creatures and 2 auras, figure out your monsters stats.
then each player can flip 1 effect card for that battle. everything always happens simultaneously. (effects are always BEFOR the battle)
after the effects. each monster attacks one another (tap). in the event they cant battle (1 has flying and 1 doesnt) the player with flying can choose to block or not.
you get 1 point for killing the other monster. 1 point for hitting the player and 3 points if you do both. after the 9 rounds are up.. the person with the highest points wins.
since this isnt actual magic we never "cast" anything and there is no graveyard.. enter and die effects do not function in this game.. you can use creatures with those abilities. they just dont actually happen.
and of course since this isnt actual magic there is no "draw, mill, etc"
this is designed to be fun and quick. 9 battles should take around 20 mins or less.
you can come up with a prize or something (1 single sealed pack to winner) or whatever.
we have no life total.. so you cant gain or pay life.
we have no hand/gy/library/etc so you cant search/wish.
if your effect card is "destroy target creature" and their creature has hexproof. you have to target your own.. if both have hexproof.. it fizzles.
use your better judgement.
if your effect card is destroy all creatures and yours or theirs is indestructible.. you get the point right?
haste is a thing. a creature without haste will still "battle" for that turn.. but if it has a tap ability it needs to have or be given haste somehow.(since you have to tap to battle tap abilities are not exactly good anyway.. there is no post combat)
vigilance is a thing. if a creature does not have it.. it taps to "battle" (it may matter sometimes)
here is an example
(creatures) flying men + Deathcoil Wurm + Glissa, the Traitor + (auras) Ancestral Mask + Asha's Favor + (effect) Giant Growth = 20/19 flying, deathtouch, first strike, and vigilance
You may have "your monster" assign its combat damage as though it weren't blocked. (this is just an example and would likely only net you 1 point for damaging the other player, you can create way more powerful monsters)
feel free to ask questions or expand on the idea.
sorry if this is sloppy I am a horrid writer.. so deal with it :/
OH I FORGOT THE BIG THING.. ONLY 1 COPY OF A CARD.. NO STACK OF 27 CLONES lol (you cant clone a whole monster, you pick 1 of the 3 legal targets :p)
Do both players need to tap their creatures for combat?
It should not be mandatory to tap my creature if "Haste" is supposed to matter (but you may have "broken" dynamics then).
How about "Legendary creatures"?
Point system doesnt related well with your 9-games system unless its a multi-player match (but you restricted it to a duel).
I prefer a 3-games system and reserve the point system for multi-players.
hadnt thought of the color thing. this is why i want feedback. i assume they would get mashed together like everything else so yes. you would end up with a multi color monster sometimes.

each side can have the same legend (if that ever happens)
if you only play 3 matches you would only have a 9 card "monster" stack wich is kinda tiny
and a 6 card aura stack and a 6 card effects stack.
agian I am open to hear suggestions on a better point system.. or maybe even a whole new approach at the combat. its just something thats been floating around my head. I have no expectations or goals with it.
I win up to five battles, they win zero. None target creatures, so gets around shroud/hexproof and making them sacrifice beats indestructibility. Game, set, match.

Tajuru Preserver, GG? I still feel there's some way to break this format, using Eldrazi sounds like a good idea, or etched champion and the protection swords. That wouldn't take care of the quoted combo though...

Nice job, you win one round, maybe, if your creature is bigger than mine still. Only one of each card means only one Tajuru Preserver in the deck. I spend all 9 battles making you sacrifice creatures, you stand a chance at winning one battle if you get beefy creatures or removal alongside your Preserver. Still gg for me.
I broke the format because I don't want you guys to have any fun :<
@Post I don't know how that would work with tokens. He said effects happen simultaneously so would you be able to choose one of the tokens to sacrifice or not since they wouldn't exist yet? Hard to say using current MTG rules since very few things happen simultaneously.

since everything is played at the same time. you could run a stack of counter spell effects. thats the beauty of it. you really never know what the persons packing.. or even if they kill all your creatures you can pack all fog effects.
i'll have to put a little more thought into it and maybe add turns/steps to help break it down a little and smooth things out.
the general idea is the same. create random fun monsters and have small battles.
You can't counter something that's not already on the stack. Counter TARGET spell. If that spell doesn't exist then counterspell can't target it and it can't be countered. It could be eratta'd so that counters work in this format, but as you have it my list is a pretty tough beat.

ok so i'll just allow players to respond to effects with effects.
shuffle each pile (creatures, auras, effects)
roll to see who "starts"
you only roll at the start of the game and then alternate who leads.
the person who starts flips 3 creatures, 2 auras and draws 1 effects card
then player 2 does the same
then here are your options..
play your effect first (player 2 can respond)
attack or not
save your effect for player 2s turn
play your effect after your attack (player 2 can respond)
or if your still to worried about "sac" effects
there can always be a stipulation on effects. they have to be draws randomly from at least 100 diffrent instants/sorceries.
then you have no clue what your special effects will be for your set of 9 matches. wich is even more fun since this is just a quick little causal thing.
or you could even do that with each pile.. you have to have a base 100 of each (well maybe 50, 100 is kinda high.. or suggest a good number)
then you shuffle those and make a stack of 27c/18a/9e
wich means your creations will always be new and exciting
going for a mad scientist, dr frankenstein kinda thing here..

Just to clarify, EtB effects don't manifest, so a shriekmaw's kill effect wouldn't just murder the opponent's frakenstein?
Interesting casual idea.
I tried something similar in edh horde with living weapons:

[edit] Poxes and barters are bad cards just the first that came to mind, instead use any of the following to make your opponent sacrifice creatures: Consuming Vapors, Cruel Ultimatum, Din of the Fireherd, Syphon Flesh, Tribute to Hunger, Twisted Justice, Warren Weirdling (thanks gatherer!)
