DFC's are going to be inevitable, so don't worry about seeing them. If you have a search card or a land that allows searching, a moderator or a judge will go through your deck and search for you.
Play, if your group chooses, best of 3; 2 - 4 rounds; Swiss pairings.
The object of the shadow draft is to be surprised with what you get, somewhat forced to play colors/cards you normally wouldn't play, and it also gives others to test their playing strength when the chaos factor is brought into play. Some folks draft better than others, while others use nimble/unfiar strategies to gain an advantage (such as cutting off a color in the draft part of the game).
We have all come to the conclusion, after playig shadow drafts for three years, that they are fun.
We take the left over packs from the box and distribute them as prizes.
Shimmering Grotto is a great idea. I'll bring it up next Friday. Iy doesn't change the fact that the Shadow Draft coordinator will be nabbed on a few occasions when a card that requires searching happens. I guess a Demonic Tutor-like effect can ruin the surprise though, since a search is required by the player. Regardless, taking out unecessary searching (Terramorphic/Evolving) can allow the fun/wow factor.
The reason I'd go with a Coldsteel variant is because it's 98% equivalent of Terramorphic... Shimmering Grotto's tax in 5-color routinely slows you down for 2.5 card draws. It's better in 2-color where you need to use its fixing less often.
Think of Shimmering Grotto as a 2-color land that R&D uses to cover all 2 color possibilities with a single card.
I see your point, it is good in theory, but outside of land, we do not want to add non-land cards.
Basic rules: take 3 packs, pull out land, tip cards, tokens, and for INN/DKA, the DFC cards, and place aside face down... NO PEAKING!!!
Take 4 of each basic land, and 3 Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse and shuffle into the 3 packs... still NO PEAKING!!!

Land
Etb tapped.
When ~ etb, choose a color.
:symtap:: Add one mana of the chosen color to your mana pool.
Rupture Spire might be an option. The games will be slow anyways.
Or Vivid lands...
