Hey folks, I recently played Magic with an acquaintance using one of his decks. I forget what he called the format, but the deck consisted of every common from the Time Spiral block. Each player (he, another person, and myself) drew from this one deck, and played 'normal' multiplayer Magic. The catch was that rather than having lands in the deck, we could set cards from our hand face-down as a basic land of any type (setting it under the appropriate marker).
I'm fairly sure that there is a name for this 'format' or that there is a name for a similar format. And I've started taking steps towards building my own stack of cards for this format.
What I'm hoping to create is essentially a 'packaged card game' derived from Magic cards that can create interesting, unpredictable, and swing-y game states.
I decided it would be very interesting to include Flashback cards. Originally I ruled out instants with flashback to avoid priority headaches and overall shenanigans, but reconsidering, I think they might add a layer of fun to the game. Can you think of any complications based on instants with Flashback, and do you personally think they outweigh the fun of being able to include cards like Momentary Blink and Strangling Soot in a community graveyard.
I've tried this in the past, but used lands and green land fetchers - it made the games even more interesting, but much longer. Tutoring effects of any sort will greatly prolong the game, especially if you have a large pile of individual cards to sort through.
Perhaps two decks - one a mix of lands, the other a mix of everything else.
Mana fixers help the game go, but take up space.
Flashback and lots of reanimation and 'cards to top of library' like Memory Lapse ran throughout my tower, as did scry to set up opponents' draws.
Don't forget the cards with built-in retrieval, like Hammer of Bogardan.
Consider some EDH 'staples' when looking at the swingy cards to add.
Land THEFT is preferred over land destruction, as the former is reversible with the right card(s).
NO vanilla creatures. Ever.
Cards like Beacon of Unrest that are shuffled back into the library are always a hoot.
Regardless of final build, understand that these games will go longer, especially if any form of tutoring is involved.
Cheers!

VS plays almost exactly as you described it. There are no lands. Instead, you can play anything face down and its a land.
