The SBing is very clean. Still loving Dismember. Verdict is fantastic vs the mirror and decks with Thrun. It's passable vs Steel WW. Still not missing Black Sun's Zenith, maybe because of the 3/1 Verdict split.
I'm trying to decide between Rager and Commando. Rager takes pressure off the mana base and is a better turn 4 play. If I end up cutting Despise, Rager gets worse. Thoughts?
I run a pretty similar list with the exception of running Commandos and BSZ, the latter of which I have found to be a neccesity against TS, but that is because I can't seem to beat Mirran Crusader without it, because the verdict usually is worthless vs. TS.
I was wondering what matchups you bring in Phyrexian Vatmother? Is that for combating Big Red? or just midrangy decks in general?
Just wondering, what's the big deal about ratchet bomb?
Also how does this deck beat tempered steel? It looks like BSZ is the only way.
After some time playing with the deck and even building a dedicated sb to Tempered Steel, I have found that matchup to be 40-60 at best. If you can stall til turn 5 and then blow them out with BSZ its a win, otherwise that matchup is impossible. I still would take my chances with UB Control because the matchups against the rest of the field, maybe besides B infect, are quite winnable.

Looking at the top decks every day, tempered steel is dominating, which is why I'm wary of playing the UB deck. I'm wondering though, what decks are bad matchups for tempered steel?
I know before NPH Big Red had a pretty favorable matchup vs. TS SLagstorm being a big reason...but that may not be current (or even correct, haha). After battling a little more today with UB it is pretty depressing facing TS and I may have to try out a new deck.
@ skink. nice list dude.. I would focus all my removal on steel..i.e having no dead draw vs them . Also run 4 sphinxes..they are just that good.. if they survive even a turn..u can change the tide of the game or secure ur win! Agree on KArn he is awesome and definitely a 2-of in the deck. Not sure about commando..while he is awesome vs control..he really is a dead draw vs steel..(and that is by far the most popular matchup around), I am running sangromancer in his place and just running 2 blu sun zenith to draw cards.
@ all: Well I have been testing UB also since is such a powerful deck.... big fu nof powerful spells hehe. Anyway, I geared my build towards beating WW steel which is the most popular and diffciult matchup for us and I think the deck is doing a good work. Testign in the 2-mans yesterday and today I went 8-2. Going 3-1 vs steel and 2-1 vs koth red, 1-0 in the mirror, 1-0 vs UW control and 1-0 vs gr artillerize. Here is my list for reference, I guess my obejective is to have all 'good removal' vs steel (i.e. no go for the throat MD) and pack 3 black sun zenith (seeing that ww is running now more and more of the phyrexian mana flying dudes) and the almighty sangromancer. He is not awesome in other matchups but he can grant u much needed life points or eat a dipatch in the ww match or removal in other matchups(one less to worry about for your sphinx)
4 stoic rebuttal
3 steel sabotage
3 grasp of darkness
4 dismember
3 black sun zenith
2 blue sun zenith
2 disperse
3 despise
27 lands
SB:
1 despise
1 steel sabotage
1 disperse
2 go for the throat
3 memoricide
3 volition reins
2 wurmcoil engine
1 carnifex
1 black sun zenith
The 'weak' matchup I think is koth red. However there are many possible answers in the deck.. preemptive(despise, stoic, memoricide) and reactive (disperse, damage?). Just look out for an unanswered koth and you should be fine. Also, always counter the burning shrine... it can get u dangerously low on life in one blow.
There are other cards I am considering for the sb..but they all depend on the meta I think. In any case the winning package so far Karn + sphinx (I would run not less than 4 sphinxes..they are THAT good) is doing great and creates a (albeit very very very soft) lock that well..actually wins games.
Koth has always been the bane of the deck. You can go back to my first post and pages. You'll see me talking about the limited options in how to deal with him. They have gotten better but not my much.
I agree is hard to deal wit but it is not an unwinnable matchup by any means. It boild down to... if they have the t3 koth ramp, then u need the t2 despise. Statistically speaking the odds are better for u since u only really need one card. t4 koth gives u more outs since u need either t3 depise or or a stoic. Not only that but there are ways around that.. kill the mountain, bounce next turn..counter he other one. I agree though that it would be nice having an out vs a resolved koth, as green has beast within for example.
@skink: Well yeah that is a good use of commando. At least you can keep Koth from ultimating and 'hopefully' kill some lands in the process. Note however that an online Koth can produce ridiculous red sun zeniths so my feeling is that there is a need for a more immediate response.
@ Azntron: Dude welcome back!! Glad o hear the family is doing well now. I have been trying lists of the Urb but nothing too serious..but have been playing for tix only with plain UB. Some comments on your list:
+ I would run some dismembers, even if you pay 2-4 life they are very good and better than go for the throat in the current meta... the only think it does not kill is sphinx but I think that is still fine since u can sb 2 go for the throat for sphinx matchups.
+I really like the artillerize tech !! It kills koth and PW's in general in one go and netting you a land/card in the process seems nice.
+ Run Karn..he is just very good. A karn late game with counter back up ? GG.
+ I had actually forgotten about the aggro infect plan vs mono R.. thanks for the reminder.
+ Why only 3 sphinxes? I am in love with them and would run
+ I like the idea of artillerize + red sun zenith. Under right conditions it will just give you a win via easy 20 damage, maybe the deck should be geared bit more into hat direction.
+ 3 slagstorm md seems like the absolute right number. The fast hands of WWsteel can be a b****.
+ Not sure about act of aggression. Is it really relevant ? I guess you can steal + artillerize, is that what u were thiking ?
Well ,glad to have u back. Will give some though to the deck. In the meantime, I have updated my deck, -3 sangromancer + 2 wurmcoil +1 disperse and -2 grasp + 2 go for the throat (to open up some sb space). The sb has also changed a bit + 2 fuel for the cause .... Will try to fit the infect plan in there. Maybe with a couple of war and peace swords. Cheers
I'm not entirely sure that Commando is better than the Infect package against Big Red. The big difference into this debate is Shrine of Burning Rage, as it can and will target your Crusader.. However I still feel it to be a little more productive. Commando surely isn't drawing you cards while you're attacking it into Koth, and Crusader can block that first man-land(on the play). This also gives you access to Vatmother, who Big Red never really did like. Dismember is pretty got against Vatmother, but that was RSZ are really their only ways around it without 2-1ing themselves, no?
@airgaps:
Thanks dude! Yeah, it was a long road to recovery.
- I don't really agree with you there. I definitely think that GftT is still fine in the meta. Sphinx is a popular boy, and the list needs a solid instant-speed answer to him. Possibly some kind of main/side split with GftT and another removal spell(most likely Dismember).
- Yeah, thanks man. It's working out pretty dang well. The Wellsprings really help the flow of the deck(I need to spend some serious time on this manabase. The Mycosynth helps out quite a bit), and having the ability to play a card that often reads:
3R
Instant
Destroy target Planeswalker. Choose one: You draw a card, or you search your library for a basic-land and reveal it. Put that card into your hand then shuffle your library.
Is pretty darn nifty.
- The Infect play is still pretty good. Shrine and Dismember are things that make me hesitate.. But I think I might bring in SoWaP also, to speed things up.
- I have a fair amount of draw/shuffle rotation. I find four Sphinx to be a little clunky.
- I also really like the idea of having access to a fair amount of burn power. It gives you the option of letting your opponent playing a huge threat late game, then Artillerize EOT and RSZ for the kill on your own turn. I've done it a few times now.. Pretty sweet!
- That being said, Act of Aggression is definitely the weakest link here. It's best in something like RW Aggro in Standard right now, not here. I tried it out because I love the card in limited.. So broken. However, here is not it's home. +1 Karn, +1 Artillerize maybe.
I don't like crusader at all anymore. Red has too many ways to deal with him. White TS just ignores him. Dismember is ran in every single deck. If you go the infect route there is absolutely no draw back for you opponent to casting Dismember.
The mise Sheoldred is to help win Sphinx wars in the mirror and vs. other control, in addition to being immune to Dismember herself. Shards for Steel. The real issue is Mirran Crusader in Puresteel and Temp Steel lists...Geth's Verdict seems like it would never hit due to the density of dudes they will have out, leaving only Life's Finale or Wurm and praying they don't have equipment on it. Obvious lack of Despise means I am vulnerable to Koth and Karn and it could also be an out to Crusader.
- Wellspring+Core doesn't seem good enough to warrant running them. Add in two Island and some Despise and see how the deck changes. Despise is super, super sick in UB Control. Being able to fish a card from your opponent's hand is awesome, as it enables you much more ease at your card management.
- Does 4 Dismember and 2 Grasp of Darkness really make sense to you? It's the thing that caught me the most off-guard I think. To me, this states that you feel that giving a creature -X/-X as opposed to just outright destroying it is important in the current metagame. If this is not correct, I feel that you should be playing Go for the Throat instead of Grasp of Darkness. GftT enables you an instead-speed answer to Sphinx, which I think is quite relevant. This doesn't leave you as open to artifact creatures as you might think, either. Despise is practically a 1cc removal spell against TS, right?
- Overall your deck seems geared towards beating midrange/control-ish decks. If you want to do that, I suggest adding in Blue Sun's Zenith. I would like to hear your thoughts on your game one against Tempered Steel. Is your control package enough to contain your opponent until you can stabilize with one of your own threats on the board?
Also.. How is your red match up without Vatmother or Crusader?
Wellspring + core hasn't been the best to be honest. I originally ran the 3/3 split but switched to 4/2 because I was sick of missing land drops. Do you really recommend more than 26 lands?
Dismember: Yes, I love this card. It is bar none next to Dispatch the best removal in the format, killing all playable creatures except Sphinx. Which admittedly GftT does but I really don't want to be cold to Steel. I don't wish to punt the game 1 but I accept that it's not favorable; at times I've been able to turn 1 Sabotage, turn 2 Disperse turn 3 counter turn 4 wellspring + disperse then ride 2 turns to a Wurm/Finale/Sphinx. It's why in my UW list I run 4 of Sabotage/Disperse, playing the tempo game forces them to overcommit into a sweeper that punishes them hard. The 4x Marrow Shards in the side have been AMAZING and game 2 and 3 is much improved. I always wavered between Grasp and GftT main.
The meta I am anticipating is at most 1 red deck, 3-4 steel, random RG and UW, a Puresteel list (kinda slow one tho) and a Grixis Control player; he's honestly the one I am most worried about. Which yeah, GftT is looking much more attractive now.
Oh and Despise...yeah I feel like a complete moron not realizing how great this is vs. Steel. I don't know about in place of Dismember since Despise is proactive vs. reactive.
No, I said to add in two Island and Despise instead of your Wellspring+Core, which it looks like you did for the most part
You have to remember that the more popular Tempered Steel decks are running Hero maindeck, and there are always Hawks and Leonin.. GftT isn't nearly as dead in that match up as some people like to state.
Finale seems very strong against some decks.. But not the most popular ones, imho. Three Black Sun's Zenith maindeck would be about right to me.. Finale in the board..?
Surprised this hasn't been posted in since the M12 release....there are a few handy cards in both colours that could give this deck a boost. I'm working on a list atm, it's a bit rough as I haven't played in a few years and have not done any playtesting, but we'll see how it works...
No SB as of yet, will work it out when I know more about the meta....
The questionable cards in my eyes are:
Distress - yes, Despise is a 1-drop, but I'd much rather have the option of hitting anything
Assassin - awesome no doubt, but how many? Should it be a 4-of staple?
Tutor - obvious, but does it fit in a control, or is it more a combo card?
Looter - with Sphinx being the only draw engine, I kinda felt it was necessary to bring this neo-Thought Courier in.
Also not sure whether to go with destroying in Doom Blade and Go for the Throat or lowering toughness with Dismember and Grasp of Darkness...don't want to get stuck playing black artifacts with the destroy spells in there.
