Hey guys, brewed this deck up in a couple of hours leading up to last nights FNM (which will be block constructed until ISD). Ended up going 3-0-1 to win the tourney of 11 players. Managed to beat tempered steel, and I tied a home brewed mix of big red and kuldotha rebirth.
Ratchet bomb SUCKED. It flat out did nothing for me all night, and I ended up siding it out after the first match of each round. In my final match vs the other undefeated guy playing kuldotha rebirth/big red, I realized that not only did his Hero of Oxid Ridge and Koth of the Hammer have a CMC of 4, but so did my Lashwrithe's, Phyrexian Metamorph's and Phyrexian Obliterators.
Against TS:
-I lost game one, he had the perfect hand, and I think I ended up drawing straight land. He had me done by turn 4 with a 2nd tempered steel being played.
-Game 2 I despise'd and tossed out a hero of bladehold. Then I BSZ'd for 1 to burn off his runts before he could play TS, his glint hawk and leonin RW became 1/1's and nothing to worry about. Next turn I used preator's grasp and exiled a vault skirge, then played it for 1 and took 2 life, then played a lashwrithe and beat him down with a 5/5, 6/6, then 7/7 vault skirge.
-Game 3 I got the best hand I could get and landed a T4 obliterator followed by a T5 obliterator, after he sac'd most of his flying arsenal.
I never faced a slow control deck, which is why Karn is in the sideboard (I would have boarded two but I haven't got two). Control vs control black has limited options, but Karn is a very very solid choice in a slow match.
If I were to rebuild the deck, I'd simply pull the ratchet bombs out. I might be inclined to fill the space with more removal. Any time you play against black or any deck that runs wurmcoil engines or any other bigger artifact creature the Preator's Grasp is INVALUABLE! One of the deck's I played against had an obliterator, that I stole and played. It's not quite as good as bribery, but it's not bad for block.
Anyhow just thought I'd share. Black hasn't really been much of a showpiece for SOM block, but it was fun to brew the deck and the games were fun
Edit: Edited the original deck list to reflect how I would build it if I were to play it again. I strongly suggest anyone with the cards to make this deck does so to try it out. It's a lot of fun to play.
Talk to me about the logic behind Mutagenic Growth and Surgical Extraction.
You could try one of the two Wellsprings in place of your ratchet bomb and move them to the board vs puresteel.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
The mutagenic growths are for saving a 4/4 or 5/5 lash germ or obliterator from dismember, or for simply going over the top if they decide to block an oblit and hope to kill it, or if the extra damage will finish someone off.
The surgicals are for removing a deck's main strengths, and on aggro decks I can potentially disrupt their whole hand before they even get a chance to put a land down if I start with a despise and a surgical extraction turn 1. I found them to be useful for removing artifact hate after baiting it with perilous myr and ratchet bomb. If you can preators grasp a dismember (shouldn't be hard) then play it to your benefit, then extract it afterwards, it's really rough for your opponent.
As for wellsprings, I strongly considered ichors... But I wasn't playing with a means of sacrificing them or destroying th for another benefit, so I wagered they weren't worth the card slot.
I would consider adding act of aggression to this deck... It essentially buys you another turn if played right.
