I've been out of Magic for a few years and just started playing in tournaments online. I've been fiddling around with this deck for a few weeks and it still doesn't seem to win consistently. I've got big problems with aggro decks, especially Tempered Steel. What I tried to do was stock the deck with evasive creatures to score counters early, then win with proliferate mid- to late game if necessary. My sideboard is a disaster. Any advice is welcome.
The only way I really kill planeswalkers is through Despise or by countering them with Corrupted Resolve. I've exchanged the 2 Marrow Shards for 2 Black Sun's Zenith, should I add two more zeniths? Also, I figured Mutagenic Growth was a good way to sneak in more counters quickly, since my creature stock is limited as it is. Thoughts on this? Thanks for the input.
EDIT: Here's an updated version of the deck. Griff, I took most of your suggestions, but it seemed light on creatures and if the tempo slowed down at all, I found punching through for that first poison counter to be difficult.
Sideboard 4x Dismember (In case spot removal with Virulent Wound isn't sufficient and Despise won't cut the mustard) 2x Steady Progress (comes in for Grim Affliction if the opponent is creature-light) 4x Virulent Wound (moved this to SB because it seems specially suited to weenie decks, switched in for Despise when useful) 2x Black Sun's Zenith (extra mass removal for TS and aggro decks, I plan to go -2 Disperse +2 Black Sun's Zenith when playing TS and other aggro) 3x ?? (I was thinking Corpse Cur here, I could put it in for 3 of the Vatmothers if I find myself against another infect)
Win percentage stands at a paltry 33%, primarily coming from SOM Block 2-mans, which I suspect may not be the best place for newbies. If I hit hard early, things go well, but a few Galvanic Blasts early can derail my game into a slow march to Loseville.
I'd appreciate being able to take a look at your deck. I found contagion engine to be too slow, and virtually useless postboard if they pack any artifact hate at all. By turn six, Tempered Steel is usually overwhelming, or I'm dead.
