So, to start things off, I'm a total Johnny. I'm a combo geek, and I'm definitely not afraid to play awful cards in new and interesting ways. I've recently decided I want to start working on Block Constructed decks for every block that has ever existed in Magic. I'm not going to attempt to build every deck all at once, though, so I want to take things slow, starting with my favourite blocks. What I would ideally like to build for each block is a fun combo-based deck that should at least be good even if not necessarily tournament-calibre. What I'm not looking to build is a deck for each block that has been done a million times before when the block in question was Type 2 legal. So, what I'm asking for today is combo recommendations, or for at least fun, zany card recommendations, both just to serve as a starting point for me to begin thinking about my Block decks. My favourite blocks are:
Ice Age (And this is following the Ice Age/Alliances/Coldsnap model... No Homelands!) Mirage (And yes, I remember Prosp-Bloom and I already have a good Equipoise/Sands of Time deck that isn't Block legal. I want to do something brand new) Tempest (I know Aluren's a fun card, and it might be what I end up doing, but any other ideas?) Onslaught (Yes, I'm sure this'll end up being storm-based, but I'm open to other ideas)
So, I'd like to start with building decks from one or two of those. Any suggestions?
Only thing is, I didn't want it to be a combo deck, I wanted it to be a fun intersting deck that wasn't really played much. And I wanted the deck to be monocolored.
I've done Time Spiral Block and made a really fun deck with it...
18 Island
2 Pendelhaven
2 Llanowar Reborn
2 Pongify
4 Unstable Mutation
4 Delay
4 Psionic Blast
4 Flying Men
4 Looter il Kor
4 Gossamer Phantasm
4 Infiltrator il Kor
4 Spiketail Drakeling
4 Maelstrom Djinn
It's an exceptionally cool deck to play.
If you made any similar fun, interactive (ie. noncombo) mono colored decks from any of the blocks, I would love to see a list.
a bit OT from what you were looking at as far as your target blocks, but I remember I had a fun vedalken engineer, march of the machines, gilded lotus, Voltaic Construct combo deck with isochron scepter/echoing truth back in Mirrodin Block that I only recently disassembled. If you're willing to stray from Onslaught over into Mirrodin, it's an angle I'd definitely recommend pursuing because it was a ton of fun. The list was something like:
4 Seat of the Synod
18 Islands
4 March of the Machines
4 Echoing Truth
43Isochron Scepter
4 Gilded Lotus
4 Thirst for Knowledge
4 Vedalken Engineer
4 Darksteel Ingot
3 Mycosynth Lattice
4 Fabricate (I think that's the name of the card)
4 Voltaic Construct
Basically just power out the construct, a march, and a gilded lotus, make infinite mana, and have a good time. Probably play out a Mycosynth Lattice and armageddon and then bounce all of their permanents with the scepter/echoing truth. Good times.
Haha! I just came here to post my Ice Age block list since I finally have most of the cards and wanted to start testing it a little, and this thread is still one of the most current threads in this subforum, over a year later. That's really funny.
Anyway, here's what I've been toying around with from Ice Age:
It seems like it should be pretty good and it seems like a lot of fun. What are people's thoughts on it? It gets style points too, because I managed to get versions of the cards with fully updated wording but original block artwork for pretty much the entire deck (foil Necros from Deckmasters box set, Dark Rituals, Swords to Plowshares, and basic lands from Coldsnap precons, and timeshifted Enduring Renewals).
Mana is obviously going to be tight but Coldsteel Heart, Dark Ritual, and Lake of the Dead should help and once Necro hits the board I'm not worried. I wanted to run Thawing Glaciers, but it's banned in block, and I kept going back and forth on the different artifact mana-sources, ultimately deciding on Coldsteel Heart because it's reusable and I don't really have anything else I'd want to play on turn two anyway. Maybe Wall of Shards, but that's more of an emergency back-up plan, and if I'm lucky Dark Ritual into Necro, but I'd rather do that on turn one anyway. (:
Also, thanks for responding to this! The decks people posted look like lot's of fun. By this point I've sort of resolved to mostly focus on putting together block decks for the active blocks, but to keep working on one old block deck at a time until I have all those done too. I'm just about done with the Ice Age block deck so it's time to pick the next old block, and I'm not sure if I want to go with Mirage, Tempest, or Onslaught from the original post, or maybe Odyssey, or? Things I now know:
My Time Spiral deck will almost certainly feature Greater Gargadon (though there was something else I wanted to try that I can't think of right now).
My Mirrodin deck will definitely feature Isochron Scepter.
My Odyssey deck will probably feature Wild Mongrel and/or Werebear.
I currently have two decks that are completely Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block legal too, and one of them (the Quillspike/Devoted Druid deck) will likely wind up being my Lorwyn-block candidate for this project. The other one is a super-fast aggro Elf Warrior deck. Here are the current lists for those:
Momentary Blink was the other card I really want to use from Time Spiral! I'll probably end up doing some sort of destructive U/W/R deck with Blinks, Gargadons, Boom//Busts, Riders, etc.
I love Block Party! I've built 50 Block decks and we roll a D50 to determine the best of one matchup, or auction for them using these rules https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Auction.
Take a look at my Wild Pair deck for a Time Spiral Combo deck or my Time Spiral Sliver deck.
As for Ice Age, I reckon Necro is a winner! There is actually an Ice Age turn 1 combo out there, but the probability of drawing the cards to pull it off is one in a million.
