Hey guys! I just played my first event with Storm and didn't drop a game! I ran Caleb's latest adventuregear list but cut the 4th opt for a repeal based on his latest stream's results with it. Looking forward to playing this deck as my primary one moving forward!
I was curious to ask what are your guys's most interesting matchups to play against to you and why?

I absolutely love the repeal tech, it’s been a hoot. Humans caught on to Unsub fast but the repeal was a blow out. Wonder when they’ll start just calling Gifts to make it hardmode.
I absolutely love playing the BGx matchups, figuring out how to outplay 6+ discard spells, race their clock, and play around a definite kill spell in hand — its a blast to me, a true puzzle worth solving. I don’t much care for UWx matches, as much as every Control player thinks it’s “favorable” I don’t ever seem to lose to them. Get to play a leisurely game for the most part.

Tron was completly my mistake. I boarded 2 empty the warrens against them and if it was grapeshot i would have won easy even with karn turn 3 eating my lands. But it was my first time playing modern after very long time and first time playing storm so am still in a newbie learning process.
Merfolk though was mono blue and all i ever saw was silvergils and lords. Anyway one game i just didn't draw the wincon and the other i lost due to siding out only 2/4 gifts and drew one into 2 relics. I still think i could have snatched one more win over merfolk if i sideboarded better and didn't make couple of obvious missplays. I found out empty is not very good here? I used 2 grapeshots and 2 emtpy but am not happy with 1/1s facing lethal because of islandwalk?
Hey guys, small report of a local monthly event which I top4ed with storm, and some thoughts / questions on the deck.
I’ve been playing storm on and off for a long time (2-3 years, though it’s never been my #1 deck)
I played Caleb Scherzr’s most recent list, with a few changes
- 3ed remand over Unsubstantiate - I’m not convinced with this card and already have repeal MD to deal with game 1 hate
- dispel over gigadeowse. Most control players I run into know how to play around it by leaving fetches up. Also in the late game they generally have way more lands than me
I used strictly Caleb’s SB plan
R1 WB tokens
Both games he has a lot of disruption (kill the bears, discard) but a very slow clock so no problem killing him )
R2 miroir
Game 1 I keep à slow hand with lots of cantrips and get killed early
Game 2 mull to 5 to a good hand but get bottlenecks on mana and end up losing
1-1
R3 5c shadow
Lose game 1 , and won the 2 and 3. The SB plan was so good, my opponent had lots of GY hate and a reasonable clock with goyf G2 but I dodged it and made some goblins . He killed 2 of them with push but I won.
Game 3 he plays a shadow but I win with bolt and small grapeshot
2-1
R4 Abzan
Basically the same as round 1, lots of disrupt, slow clock. I lose game 1 but win the 2 others by setting up grapeshot + remand combo and getting value from a Baral in response to a kill spell
3-1
R4 elves
Mull to 4 game 1 to something like 2 lands Baral gifts. I draw a ritual and a land but he plays ooze with 1 green up. I gifts EOT 3 and set up a winning pile through the ooze (he exiled the gifts in response to PIF. I don’t recall exactly the winning line should have taken notes )
4-1
Quarterfinals RB hollow one
Game 1 I’m faster than him with a turn 3 kill
Game 2 he killed my beard but I set up a big turn while at 1 life and manage to make 30 goblins for the win
Semi: Abzan coco-hatebears
Kind of a brew, basically WB hâte ears splashing for coco
Game 1 I keep a loose hand of Baral 2 ritual 3 lands and a slight and draw only mana for all the game and lose
Game 2 he has a slow clock and no real hate and I win with grapeshot late game
Game 3 I have a good hand and go for goblins on turn 4 (play electro lancer, Manamorphose into pieces, ritual to play my goblins ) unfortunately he vials in a canonist in response to the ritual.
I try to set up a second combo turn but he draws 3 Tidehillow sculler and a flicker whisp to protect the canonist si I can’t do a lot to save my skin
Overall I was really happy with the deck , and enjoyed playing it more than the last time I used it (at GP Madrid, I faced off 5 humans decks and got a bit disgusted of the deck )

Couple of thoughts.. I like 2 shivan rift over 2 spirebluff canal, since im finding super relevant the untapped land in games that tend to last long. 2 opt for 2 bolt makes extra room for bloodmoon in the side, want to come back to that sb plan
My opinion I don't really like bolt in main board. Some new tech has been using Repeal instead because the card draw is really nice. As for lands, when I ran the fetch version, I like having 4 Scaliding Tarn and 3 other blue fetches rather than only 2. I like 3 Spirebluff Canal and 4 Islands, having 0 Shivan Reef
Question for you guys:
In my meta, there's a lot of Burn. What do you guys think I can cut in the SB for Dragon's Claw. Been running Caleb's new fetchless:
Hello, I'm returning to Magic (and Modern) after several year's absence, I see that many of the Storm pieces I was used to got banned. Pretty impressive writeups, and I see that Caleb Scherer has some advice too, but the current two high-profile events didn't place a Storm player in the top 8 .
I was wondering if anyone has tested the Madcap Experiment + Lich's Mirror as a Draw-7 alternative (and transformative sideboard option)?
The current lists seem very vulnerable to graveyard hate.
Also, I have two basic questions on piloting the current lists:
- what is your average combo turn?
- when do you play the mana-reducing creatures? The turn before or hold onto them? Aren't they way too vulnerable in the current metagame?
For the Empty the Warrens sideboard option, is it worth adding a card to give them haste?
I played two games in the MTGO 2-man queues and I got solidly trounced - the Chord deck with combo absolutely killed me, and Humans too. Remand was a dead card in both games, I had turn 4 kills both times but I got killed turn 3 both times.
Soo, with the unbannings, how afraid of an emergency ban are you guys?
I mean if evry1 slams a jace on turn 4 (hint: alot of people will) storm or other combo decks will just run rampant and possibly dominate the format.
Hello all. Just finished the deck and got out for my first fnm(double) with it. The madcap experiment package is kinda something I'm testing as a personal preference thing. I took 2 post board games off of it where they pulled all answers to it out post board.

If Jace does take over, and control becomes dominate, then I'm not worried at all. We have a good MU and if we need to , we can always board in something like Defense Grid.
As for the Burn MU, i'm still under the impression the MU is close to un-winnable. We are probably on average, a turn faster than Burn, but obvious Eidolon of the Great Revel is a blow out.
The only way to win vs Burn is:
Game 1, draw nut hand with Repeal or Unsubstantiated by turn 3
Game 1, opponent has only spells and lands in starting hand, which is quite slow, we go off turn 3 or 4
Post Board: Kill Eidolon with Bolt the turn it comes out or opponent never casts it.
Post Board: turn 2 Empty for 4 or 5
Or opponent floods with no Eidolon or we kill it quickly
Basically things need to go pretty good for us, and things need to go pretty bad for them. Not that much "outplaying" here imo.
My local meta sometimes has a lot of burn, so I'm going to try Madcap Experiment strategy next tourney. Thing is, Pieces of the Puzzle is just too good against so many MUs that I think I'm sticking with 4 in the SB, cutting maybe a Shattering Spree since my local meta rarely has Affinity and sometimes its a brick vs Tron anyways. I might do this for bigger tournies/mtgo since i think we still win vs Affinity pretty hard anyways. As for Lantern, if Jace, the Mind Sculptor does take over, it could possibly push out Lantern. We have a favorable MU game 1, and post board its not too bad too. Plus the deck isn't that popular
I disagree about the Lantern MU. It’s not as favorable as you’d think if they know what they’re doing. Witchbane can come down as early as t2, albeit everything going right, but t2 really just requires a Mox and 3 other artifacts in play + whir.
T3 is extremely easy for them to have it out.
They can also whir for 1 and grab the MB Grafdigger’s cage in response to Gifts if they don’t have enough artifacts.
The only way it’s a sure thing is if you have repeal in hand when you try going off and enough mana to cast it during the combo.
Why is that? Is just for avoid shocking from the lands? If I already have Scalding Tarns, how bad would be a manabase with fetchs, shocks, (and maybe checks?) in comparison? Thanks a bunch!

Common sense is the most fairly distributed thing in the world, for each one thinks he is so well-endowed with it that even those who are hardest to satisfy in all other matters are not in the habit of desiring more of it than they already have. - René Descartes
From what I've heard, both the fetchland/fetchless manabase are viable. I think the reason why people play the Fetchless build (Other than budget) is to keep the card scry to the bottom of the deck.
Also, stay away from the Sulfur falls. You're better off playing more basics than to play this.
You make a good point about Scry. I'll start with Scalding Tarns then and move to the "painless" manabase if needed. Thanks!

Hello! New Storm player here, recently started playing Modern and Magic in general. I went 2-2 at my locals this week, honestly pretty disappointed in losing some of the games due to not really knowing the matchup (also lost to MD Engineered Explosives against T2 Empty the Warrens).
That being said, I'd like some advice for the following situations:
- Playing against interaction (counterspells)
- Playing against stupid UWx Jace Decks
I feel that against UWx Control, I never have a moment when I can successfully combo off without being interrupted in some way that I'm not expecting. I'll be holding 7 cards and they'll be holding 7 cards but their cards just do so much more than mine...some advice or even ideas for thought would be great.
To beat counterspells you need to know which ones you're playing around, and find/create a window of opportunity to combo off. This can be done with several different ways:
- Wait for them to tap out/low for a threat and then combo off. Most UW decks are tappout, though Jeskai mostly operate at instant speed
- Play gifts EOT to force them to counter, then combo off
- Set up a big turn where you play a Baral into rituals/gifts PIF with 2 payoff cards (for instance you can go Baral Ritual, they go to kill baral, rital in response, manamorphose, gifts, and if they counter maybe you have a PIF or you can grapeshot/remand/grapeshot. Also lines that work well against countermagic is when you have PIF in hand and enough mana to play it/flashback it.)
Basically you need to see how much time you can gain before comboing. Control decks generally leave you a lot of time, so you either need to kill them as soon as they tappout (for instance T3 on the play) if you get the window, or take your time to set up a combo turn as I described, or with countermagic (remand) backup.
Post side you get access to Gigadrowse or additional countermagic (dispel) as interaction. Gigadrowse can be a trump against control, but good players know how to play around it by leaving fetchlands up

Only savvy Halo players have caught onto that, the typical strategy I see is “stick it and protect the Queen”. Naming grapeshot.
