Played in a small 3-round tournament at the LGS just to get some practice in before this weekend. Lost the modern match-up roulette today. Out of the other 7 players that were there, four were favorable match-ups [three tron, and one grixis control], so, naturally, I play two bad ones round 1 and round 2.
I think it's important to talk about the games we lose, and not just brag about the times we do amazingly well!
L, 0-2, Burn. Game 1, he top decked the burn he had to when he was dead to my PrimeTime (+Valakut triggers) the next turn. Game 2, I drew no Baloth, and no ramp... just all lands and win-cons and it was just too slow. I Anger'd away two creatures including Eidolon (which is a beating against us) but it was just too little too late. This match-up seems like it's ALL about ramp, and life-gain... and hoping they miss one turn. Anyone else feel this way? I thought it was 50/50 but I think we're unfavored unless we just draw ALL the Sakura's for fog effects. L, 0-2, Ad Nauseum. This match-up just actually seems unwinnable, so I'm not going to worry about it (sort of like Jund v Tron). ((We played twice more afterwards and he won both of those too. He just always had the blue Pact for my Nature's Claims and black Pact for PrimeTimes. And, that's when he didn't just go off uninterrupted on turn 3, which he did game 1.)) W, 2-0, Merfolk. Wasn't even really close. He drew lots of Silvergills but few lords and had all the Mutavaults with very little islands. I Anger'd and ramped for a pretty easy win game 1. I also blew him out game 2 by fetching to kill two lords (with two Valakuts online) and then blocked with PrimeTime because the islandwalk lords were now dead.
Couple of thoughts.
(a) I liked the one-of Courser; I think it'll stay.
(b) I didn't play Chalice today, but I think I'd like to try them. (Against Ad Naus, what's the number you usually set it on? 1, 2, 3, 5?)
(c) Do we really need E.E.? What's the major decks you bring it in against? Should I just switch these for Chalices?
(d) I think I might even want a 3rd Nature's Claim, or maybe even a Back to Nature. (Phyrexian Unlife, Eidolon, white Leyline, Bogles) Necessary, or do you feel I'm just in tunnel vision because of today's results?
@Heenock, I see you went 2-0 against burn today. What are your honest thoughts on the match-up? Do you feel favored, or do you feel he drew poorly against you today?
jblackmor - I would check out Thien's sideboard guide regarding both Chalice and Engineered Explosives. I think he will answer a lot of your questions about what matchups he would bring in what cards and what to set Chalice at.
@jblackmor : VS Ad Nauseum set Chalice on 1, if he had lotus bloom suspended, set on 0
For Burn, it really depends your sideboard and your hand G2, and the skill of your opponent^^.
We are unfavored G1, so we need to race for win.
When you side do not hesitate to cut 2/3 scapeshift and ramps spell, and do not hesitate to mulligan a dirty 7 hand, just one Baloth can make you win.

another thing that shuts down aggro is silent arbiter it can do some good game 1, a few times i've ran it mainboard and it stopped dredge in its tracks.
I love silent arbiter. I'm not sure I would ever run it in this deck, I think sweepers and or Courser of Kruphix and or Fog makes our aggro matches favorable enough to not need arbiter. It is still one of my favorite EDH cards though.
Also, I agree with you on Dredge Dos Rogue, it's pretty easy when you have anger of the gods. One of the reasons I run 4 across the 75
I see a lot of Leylines, Moons, and taxing artifacts in my mega. If we wanted to run some sort of main deck artifact/enchantment removal, what card would do the best job?

Reverberate is a very useful card in a lot of matchups; I was playing it as a 2-of in my board for a while. Very good against counterspells, for example. I once used it to double up a Lightning Bolt so I could burn an opponent to death.

top 5 anime of all time (tv, not books because dragon ball would be first)
2-0 vs Bant Company
This guy usually plays Zoo. G1 he oppens with Experiment 1 followed by Qasali Pridemage, but he never sees any blue lands (and me neither, so I thought he was on a Zoo build and got no red lands). I had an Anger to wipe his board and he has little to follow up, so I could Scapeshift easily.
G2 I Anger'd his board out and then tried to stick Baloth, but he had Spell Queller. Two turns later, I had 6 lands + 1 Fetchland on the field, Pact, Anger and Courser in hand and he had 4 mana open. I went for the Pact, which got Spell Quelled. Then I played my Anger and got my Baloth and Pacts back. Played Courser and Titan came two turns after to close the game.
0-2 vs BW Tokens
G1 I was close to getting under control of the game when I played Titan and took out most of his board, but he had a Murderous Cut to kill it (if it was Path, I could have won).
G2 he starts with Seize + Extraction on my Titan and Sorin + tokens get him out of Scapeshift range. I had cast 3 Angers on this game but still couldn't keep him out of tokens.
2-1 vs Bant Eldrazi
G1 I mull to 5 and stuck on 1 land.
G2 he starts with Leyline but I had a Claim. He then plays another Leyline but I stick a Titan that get 2 Valakuts and manage to attack with it, getting the other 2 Valakuts. He kills the Titan and plays Worldbreaker taking out one of the Valakuts, but I get enough to wipe his board whenever he plays a threat and find the Claim to finish him off with ramp + fetchs + lands I was holding.
G3 He plays T4 Leyline and again I go with Titan getting 2 Valakuts to start shooting his board out. Claim comes and I Scapeshift for the win.
2-0 vs RG Tron
G1 I was on the play. He had turn 3 Tron but no threat. I had turn 4 Titan. He then plays Ugin to exile the Titan and I follow with Scapeshift.
G2 I kept a hand of Valakut, Mountain, Mountain, Search, Sakura, Crumble to Dust and Titan. Drew a Fetch on my first turn and that means turn 3 Crumble. He scoops.
Round 1 : 0-2 vs infect
Quick games. I could have done better G2 if I didn't forget to side in Nature's Claim
Round 2 : 2-0 vs RG Breach
G1 : I was quicker than him.
G2 : Turn 3 Crumble to Dust destroyed 3 lands of my opponent.
Round 3 : 0-2 vs RG Breach with Nahiri
G1 : I kept a without wincons and my opponent killed me quickly
G2 : I was not expecting Blood Moon at all. I was forced to concede when my last titan died.
Round 4 : 2-1 vs sliver
G1 : Turn 5 scapeshift for the win
G2 : Turn 3 Collected Company brought 3 Predatory Sliver & 1 Sinew Sliver. Next attack was lethal.
G3 : Quick opening while my oppenent mull to 4. Turn 5 win.
@elpeludo : I really like the Thien list, but this is clearly a list in response to the online meta (4 Sudden Shock for example, you have lot of infect and zoocide in mtgo, same for Kruphix and baloth main deck, lot of burn online).
My list : https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/497894#online (same list but no melira in side, maybe +1 relic or 4th baloth for this week) is also adapted to my local shop meta, no infect, just one affinity, one ad nauseam, Eldrazi & Taxe, zoo, Bant Eldrazi and lot of jund/junk/tron/dredge/delver/burn.
1 Trinisphere in side is for test, i think it can be great in my meta which consists of many deck that plays only 1 or 2 cmc spells.
1-2 vs Dredge
Got my Anger Toughtseize'd G3 one turn before I wiped his whole board
2-0 vs Green Stompy
2-0 vs RG Tron
0-2 vs Infect
So, here's my dilemma. I have some store credit that I could use to get a Spellskite or, with a little cash, get a Chalice. Which one is a better pick? Appart from those 2, I could get a couple Pithing Needles on their spot on sideboard, so that I'd be able to hold off Inkmoths, Karns, GQs, Platings, Fulminators and stuff like that.
My sideboard for the moment is:
What would a good sideboard look like for a meta like this?:
2 Dredge
2 Infect
1 GR Tron
1 UR Delver
1 Grixis Delver
1 Suicide Bloo
1 Naya Burn
1 UW Ojutai Control
1 Abzan Company
I went 3-1 with a more or less stock list, except 4 farseek, 2 Explore main, and 2 spellskites in the board instead of engineered explosives and reclamation sage. Went 2-1 vs Infect, 2-0 vs Abzan Company, 2-1 vs UR Delver, and 0-2 vs burn. Chalice is a boss, except it does little against top decked boros charms, and skill cracks
I love Fog in my meta its a lot of go wide creature decks like goblins, bushwacker zoo, dredge, then a couple infect are standard. I main deck 3 Fog and 3 Anger of the Gods and no bolts and I regularly win. If I was going into an unknown meta I would definetly play the bolts.
Before I thought about playing fog, my meta was almost exclusively small aggro decks so I main decked 4 anger 2 or 3 pyroclasm and a couple of bolts. It didn't matter that I had to cut a little ramp because I had all the time in the world after a wipe or 2
I think it's important to talk about the games we lose, and not just brag about the times we do amazingly well!
