I've jumped to the BG Rock train aswell.
i've been playing with almost the same 75 of Sol Malka. What do you guys think of it?
My main issue with it, it's the excess of 3cmc drop, Bob is hurting a lot more.

I'm a big fan of his list but I don't like the baubles, traverse and only 3 Lilly.
I play almost exact 60 except I add 1 Lilly, 1 go for the throat, and take out the 2 baubles, traverse and sometimes add a flex slot or a 24th land
In be SB He has a lot of 1 of's and some are narrow. His sweepersuit is nice and versatile. I think EE or an additional flaying tendrils would be better than gaze of granite. I do like the 2 duress because it hits planeswalkers and really helps against all he UW control running around.
List seems good though. Please report your results and findings after testing.
So at first I did not liked those baubles and traverse, but with testing they impressed me a lot. Bauble helps mitigate the scry, it's a free info which improves turn 1 discard by a bit. Traverse never were a bad or dead draw.
I've played on two events with almost the same 75 as posted.
First were at a GPSPAULO side event, which i finished 4-0 and played against: Sultai Shadow 2-1, RG Titanshift 2-1, Mono Red Goblins 2-1 and Jund 2-0
And the other event i played on my LGS and finished 3-1 losing 0-2 against burn. Wons were: BW Tokens 2-0, Sultai Faeries 2-1 and Affinity 2-0.
Overall I'm 7-1-0 with BG Rock and i'll take it to my next PPTQ.
I'm considering the 4th LoTV too, she's way too powerfull and it's a clean way to deal with fatties that I can't kill ASAP.
As the board options, It seems balanced, I really liked illnes and gaze techs..and the two copies of duress as a complement of the main deck Thoughtseizes.

What have you been bringing in the gaze to deal with? I couldn't tell if that was a card he just decided to try out for that event as a EE that could in theory kill things w cmc 3+ or if there's some kind of specific target for it that just escapes my brain.

It's decent against go wide strategies and can keep our main threats alive... I usually bring it in against Elves, Merfolks, Tokens strategies, Affinity.. For now, Gaze didn't disappointed me yet.
It seems like a very overpriced Damnation/Flaying Tendrils.
Yea, this is why I asked the question because it is the one card he included lately that really seemed odd. Even in these matchups (from @mrc_jr) "I usually bring it in against Elves, Merfolks, Tokens strategies, Affinity." we're talking... 6 cmc to wipe the board of all their 3 and fewer drops. Its nice that it can destroy more than just creatures, but this is a deck that packs 4 abrupt decay and 3 maelstrom pulse and shouldn't have much of an issue there.
Played my list from the previous page a bit tonight against Eldrazi Tron for practice. It didn't feel favorable, but I was able to take 3 out of 5 games, losing G1, then winning 3 of the 4 postboard. For one reason or another, I feel better against Tron. Part of that is that 2 color decks can better run Ghost Quarter, another is that MB Fulminator Mage is almost always relevant and great fuel for Delirium, then there's the fact that I'm on 4 Thoughtseize since my manabase is so much less painful, and finally... Rancor is actually really freaking good against them. It gives anything the ability to trade. 4/5 Goyfs for example go from not good enough, to the perfect size.
New to the deck and looking at a build to put together and a few card choices stand out
i see most lists now play 3 scavenging ooze, first question is why so many? and which match ups does this card shine against, apart from the obvious dredge etc
second i see almost every list has 3 fulminator mage, this card seems bad against E-Tron as they dont really rely on the tron set up, and tron seems pretty dead so where else is it brought in? is it mana denial for the fragile death shadow mana base?
Hey guys, I'm looking to buy into this archetype and could use some advice before I commit to it!
I saw Reid Duke's article and I like the path-less build he offered at the end. I have some minor modifications in mind, but all in all I trust the BGx pro to build a good deck. One thing though: I really like the idea of Grim Flayer. Is he worth it without running something like Mishra's Bauble? I don't particularly want to drop the money on baubles right now, but I think flayer is a sweet card.
Would it be reasonable to take that list as a starting point and trim some removal (looking at you Murderous Cut) for grim flayers?
I want to feel confident about what I'm getting myself into before spending the money, so any guidance is greatly appreciated

One could probably build a more or less conventional mid-range list with Grim and I'm sure someone will chime in with an opinion. All of these cards have value, Bauble may still be somewhat price-inflated, but Bob will hold value and Grim isn't that expensive in any case. Traverse is not much at all.
Budget is not the point of this forum, but the Traverse build is seemingly competitive so I don't see any harm in comparing the price of it and mid-range Bobzan lists.
Noble Hierarch lists are another way to go, but Noble is even more expensive than Bob.
I was finding that Eternal was basically a 4 drop, and the aggressive creatures really needed some help; it's not that I love Kalitas. I'm guessing Sol Malka is Edward40Hands on MTGO, since I see that name a ton on Rock with the same exact list as Sol.
Scavenging Grounds has been alright, I've used it a few times against Storm on MTGO. Sometimes this deck has too much colorless though, which can get awkward. Last night I GQd my own lands multiple times to get clues for Tireless and fixing my mana.
Last Hope is so much worse than LOTV, LOTV is way higher in the power level scale, and since this deck isn't running paths or terminates I want more ways to kill fatties. I haven't tested Hope in a list in a while, the only issue is when she's bad, she's god awful bad. LOTV is rarely that awful.
Rumumap was just overkill, replaced him with Thrun with blue being more popular
Duress in the SB nowadays seems so silly, CB is just way more flexible, which helps for burn, company, combo, etc.
I wouldn't be opposed to 4 IOK, 2 Thoughtseize with 4x Bobs being so bad against burn decks.
I'm pretty sure Reid wrote that CB pretty much replaced duress for him in almost all situations.
I'll keep testing.
Bobzan looks like a good idea for GBx players to try aa well, may be where the deck is heading. Flayer is better in a meta where people don't want to interact, I think he's in a bad spot right now
We're using different lists but I agree on Kalitas. It's not that it's bad, it's just that I would prefer to be running something else. Kalitas checks a lot of boxes though. Last Hope is pretty bad in most situations I've found, the one time it's good is against opposing Lingering Souls, which is something of an issue as pure BG. I keep one in the SB for that.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to start a budget conversation. I actually already have all the back and white cards, just need to purchase the green. Hence wondering if flayer is worth playing without bauble in a non-traverse list.
As someone who's gone back and forth between abzan Traverse and Malka's list (plus-minus just a few cards), I can confidently say at least one Flayer is good even in straight Rock. Go for it. If you want to hedge, get two now and see how you like it. The top deck fixing is great with Bob no matter what else is happening.
Hey, new guy here. Was wondering if some of you could help me. I think I've got the list I like now, but 2nd opinions are always nice. I've recently picked up the deck, and my meta is diverse but mostly comprised of Affinity, Burn, Merfolk, Death Shadow and big mana decks like Eldrazi Tron and Titan Shift. One more thing, I'm not certain on what Liliana, The Last Hope is generally a SB card against, small creature (+ Ability) or grindy decks (- Ability). Thanks!
MAINDECK: -1 Vent and -1 Rhino for +1 Hissing Quagmire and +1 Tireless Tracker, respectively. (It's become trendy to cut Tracker, which I think is a big mistake. We want games to go long enough for Tracker to be fantastic, and that usually happens.) If I had my druthers you'd cut both Rhino, but that's often a pet card and it seems good enough in your local meta.
SIDEBOARD: -2 Finks for +2 Feed the Clan. This is an overlooked gem for us -- it often counterfeits entire game plans when it resolves (and can't be Pathed or fall to your own Tendrils like Finks). I've had two in my board since I got tired of losing close games to Burn and I've never looked back.
I'm skeptical about the Blood Baron -- it's a fine card but doesn't scream "necessity" in your list. Given the way you described your meta, I'd recommend -1 Baron and -1 Stony Silence for +2 Fulminator Mage (or Ghost Quarter if those are unavailable). You seem unable to punish greedy mana bases. Even blowing up a land against Burn can make a huge difference. Grinding against fast decks can be too slow and grinding against decks like TitanShift can be meaningless if you can't disrupt them in the right way.
Lili the Last Hope is a meta dependent slot. I have plenty of CoCo nonsense to deal with, so I maindeck her to kill dorks efficiently. Your mileage may vary. She's not a great -2 prospect right off the bat -- Eternal Witness is a better candidate if you need that effect (because Lili will probably die at 1 loyalty anyway). I've fallen in and out of love with EWit but currently wouldn't leave home without her. She's great to rebuy discard or land destruction when that's what you need, which Lili the Last Hope can't always do.
...I would take Strangleroots advice with---careful consideration
I've been playing Jund, Junk and Rock for years, you absolutely do not need to sideboard in Feed the Clan, especially with Abzan. I literally must be winning 7 out of 10 games against burn with Abzan. Between MTGO and in paper, I have a crazy good record against burn. Shambling Vents, Rhinos, Scoozes, Finks and CB's are WAY, WAY more than enough. Finks is just another good creature against aggro, midrange and control. I don't always use Finks in my Junk list, but it's rarely ever a bad card to have in the SB
I also don't suggest cutting Rhino below 2, that helix and trample is relevant, despite delvers and Eldrazi. Tireless Tracker is the nuts, but I don't recommend cutting the Rhino
I also don't know where he's getting the info to shove an Eternal Witness, that's really a Rock card.
If your meta has that much Affinity and E-Tron, do NOT cut your Stony Silence below 3. I play Eldrazi Tron, and Stony Silence can absolutely hose the deck depending on their deck and their draws. A good E-Tron player may cut artifacts against you, but if you're playing Dark Confidant, they're obligated to keep all 4 Ballistas in or risk you running away with the game.
Stony Silence is also demoralizing for Affinity players and is a nice hedge against Lantern decks. If your meta has that much Affinity and E-Tron, 3x copies is absolutely fine.
Lilliana, the Last Hope is really better off in the sideboard, if you chose to play her. Reid Duke was spot on, LOTV is on a whole other power level. Lilliana, The Last Hope is better when you're trying to pick off small creatures. It's ok as a grind card if you feel you have nothing better.
I do agree that you should cut the 3rd copy of Shambling Vent, either play the common Wildwood or a now rising popular Treetop Village.
Cut the Blood Baron, you can play better cards. Lingering souls is what absolutely crushes Shadow decks, along with a resolved LOTV.
It's hard to comment on your entire SB as I don't play at your store---you are missing Fulminator Mages though, and 3x CB's and 2x Finks is a bit much. You also have 2x Gideons. I'm assuming you have a crap load of non-shadow midrange/control decks?
Your deck is fairly standard outside of what I pointed out.

Grim Flayer plus Mishra's Bauble and Traverse the Ulvenwald together are going to be cheaper than Dark Confidant. The Traverse build is the place where folks seem to like Grim. Bobzan seems to be increasingly popular these days.
