He had a Phyrexian Totem out and attempted to attack me with it as a last ditch effort to get some damage in, but I had a Flames of the Blood Hand waiting for it knowing the 4 damage would leave him with a board hosting a single land, and he conceded after that.
I cast Flames of the Blood hand and hadn't named a target yet before he assumed and conceded althought I was ready to make him sacrifice four permanents with it because until after the match I actually hadn't realized that. Actually I've been a complete noob and realized certain cards can't target creatures, Keldon Marauders' ETB included (I found this out when it went to the graveyard and an opponent had Leyline of Sanctity out and I was the only target, and my friend pointed it out.
The above happened at a kitchen table type game, thankfully, and not at the local game shop in a tournament. But that's the point of testing with my friends is, so we don't make dumb mistakes like that when it matters
Speaking of which, tonight was my first Modern night. I didn't fair too well, being that I hadn't tested against most of the decks so I didn't understand how they functioned.
The decklist is nothing special, but main deck Krosan Grip might raise eyebrows. I knew going into it that everyone was going to have Leyline of Sanctity in their SB, and some even main decked it. Not only that but Ghostly Prisons and Oblivion Rings are rampant as White seems to be a popular color in my meta. I also frankly didn't have room in my sideboard for enchantment hate which I knew I'd absolutely need. Every card in my sideboard found some use (Leyline against Matyr-Proc and Melira-Pod Combo, Pithing Needle against everything, Shattering Spree against Affinity, Relic of Progenitus against Matyr-Proc, some weird TRON/Gifts/Unburial Rites build, and Drede).
I only went 1-3 which was pretty terrible, although it was my first time playing people outside of my friends who's decks I'm familiar with. What I found increasingly frustrating was getting to the point of top deck mode and burning out so often because of the amount of life gain floating around the format.
At the moment, I'm really eying Faithless Looting, although I have no idea where to fit it in the deck. I'm also considering going back to a B/R build I had been playing with before and sideboarding Surgical Extraction, maindecking Confidant again and Bump in the Night. It's really hard to say.
I mainly rolled over to decks because of my own play mistakes/novice level of understanding where those decks were concerned, so I'm sure I'll do better next time, but the "burn out" state when I go into top deck mode is irritating and makes me want Shrine of Burning Rage or something.
Going to a local modern tournament today. I have a very creature light deck, no way to deal with leyline of sanctity (other than rain of gore) and unsure about the meta. It will be interesting to say the least.
How does Rain of Gore deal with Leyline of Sanctity?
Why waste MB slots for Grip and then wonder where you'd make room for Faithless Looting?
Grips should be in the side unless your meta is filled with Leylines in the main, meaning people are playing too much Storm and possibly Burn and you should change up your approach accordingly.
Rain of Gore is for lifegain, period. Side it in vs Martyr/Proc, and against anyone you think will start dropping Kitchen Finks.
Splashing White seems bad. What else does it bring to the table beyond Helix, which is merely a more-expensive Lighting Bolt in this deck? I think you're missing the point of what a Burn deck should be doing and what it's trying to do. Maybe you should look up the RDW options elsewhere on the boards which lean more creature-heavy.
Splashing white isn't "bad". Yes, it is another deck, not Burn, but if you think about it, it's more resilient (obviously, as adding colors opens possibilities) while being more vulnerable to things like Blood Moon (Captain Obvious here!).
A little heavy on creatures, but Hellspark Elemental and Grim Lavamancer (I usually don't have them in my burn lists) should fare well with Faithless Looting (Hellspark can be discarded and brought back, while Lavamancer will get more "food" to deal damage).
A mostly stock list with a few minor tweeks here and there. I think the one noticably change is Flame Javelin in place of other choices. I'm honestly surprised this card hasn't been discussed as of yet. It's one more damage to the dome, speeding up our clock as well allowing us to kill any troublesome x/4 beasties with but a single card. I can see the uses of Flamebreak and Flames of the Blood Hand though and will be testing the both of them to see which proves the most useful. As of right now, this deck seems to have a consistent kill clock of turn 4-5 vs control and 4-6 vs aggro (because we need to throw a burn spell at a critter in a pinch.
The one thing I really think we are missing is some form of reliable card draw. Faithless Looting looks interesting, but I just don't see being for Modern Burn. We empty our hands fast and once empty this ends up being magma jet for 1 more only no damage is done and both cards go to the graveyard whether we want them or not. Definately not efficient play. Browbeat is also a no-go as we will never get the effect we want or need. it seems the best we have would be Desperate Ravings though it could still be risky. Adding a singleton Steam Vents as fetch land fodder allows for the flashback though.. I suppose only play-testing will tell if it is worthwhile.
That's a nice build. Flame Javelin vs Flames of the Blood Hand is a long debate. If you come to face many life-gain decks, Flames is a nice option. Otherwise, Javelin's ability to target creatures is an advantage over Flames.
About Faithless Looting, contrary to control decks, we do not need to hold all available options to set up a late game win. Draw two cards and discard two cards should be fine, since you'll just filter your hand and keep the most effective spells to finish the game as fast as you can. Combining it with cards like Hellspark Elemental, it's pure card advantage.
Also, with the potential rise of white token decks, Sulfur Elemental is a nice SB option to consider.
I think we've already talked about Sulfur Elemental, and it's come down to "don't do it". Tokens more often than not don't start coming out until after one or two Glorious Anthem type effects are already in play; taking one off the toughness at that point isn't helping at all, especially at the price of adding one to power.
I liked a lot of another Dark Ascension card, its Increasing Vengeance. I really wana run 3 or 4 in my list cause its just awesome!
Imagine a 3 mana 6 damage with Lava Spike and Lightning Bolt, plus it have Flashback with TWICE copy, so its a 6 mana 9 damage with Bolt/Spike/Volley....
I didnt tested yet, but it just feel awesome for me.
Copy spells are usually bad (unless in some combo decks) 'cause you really don't want to top deck it late game. Cards that depends on other cards to work are a huge disadvantage in a deck that aims to unload all spells as fast as possible. Otherwise cards like Twincast, Reiterate or Reverberate would see more play.
I tested Faithless Looteing and it was bad. I really didnt like it cause it is -3 +2 card drawer/filter, but maybe it can be played better with more falshback cards or cards that take advantage from the yard.
At worst it's a 3 mana burn spell, at best you discard it to looting and pay the madness cost, and it becomes RR, draw 2, discard 1, deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
Interesting. I'm worried about being stuck with one piece and not the other, but no harm in trying it out I suppose. Thanks for the suggestion.
Just 3-1´d on the premier event with R/b burn woth black for bump in the night and blightning main deck. The deck cost near 30 ticks +/- and seems viable on MTGO metagame.
Curiously, I've not tried Blightning. I've seen in suggested in this thread in the past, and I must admit I'm not sure it "fits" the deck. On the other hand, it seems to have done you well, so it can't be all bad right? I'll try it out and see what I think. Congrats on the finish, btw.
Sideboard Decision!! This is my problem now, I'm away from the store about 3 years now and will play a Modern PTQ on march 4.
So I really dont know the Meta and anyway Modern is not much plyed here. For a random Meta, what you think about this SB?? The problem is that a lot of people play on budget and a good amount play very serious, so I know I can expect a lot of Affinity from the part on budget and the top decks from other PTQs around the world from serious players.
Does anyone have any experience running Goblin Guide in modern? Is he good enough? It seems to me that he only gets in one swing before he sits on the battle field, useless.
Did he assume you can Flames of the Blood Hand his Phyrexian Totem?

IMHO Gut shot is awesome in modern. delver is played A LOT. and a turn 0 kill to clear path for goblin guide is good.
Equinox², I suggest you to take a look at the Boros thread. The deck is really nice and is gaining momentum. Here's a sample list: http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=43325

It might be worth looking at a build with Shrine of Burning Rage, Keldon Marauders, Kargan Dragonlord with Volt Charge, Tezzeret's Gambit, etc...
