Outside of needing sorceries for goyf, doesn't tribal flames work better as boros charm? It makes your mana base more fluid and serves as extra counter spells to get around removal
I am looking forward testing this deck for the upcoming PTQ season, would like to encourage you trying it out by yourselves and would appreciate your constructive feedback.
I just tried your deck at a small modern event. I won 2-0 vs UWR control and lost 1-2 vs Melira Pod. I had Goblin Guide instead of Delver of Secrets (call it a knee-jerk reaction after having delver flip problems in my playtesting). I wish I hadn't, though, because I feel that the pod matchup may have been won had I a delver to fly above the blockers.
The deck ran very well. I'm a little unsure as to how to sideboard vs Melira Pod, specifically what to side out against them. Any tips?
I also played against the Scapeshift list that won the last big tournament. I went 3-1 in games (all without sideboard), losing a game in which I kept a greedy one lander (it was super tempting on account of counter magic and turn 1 Nacatl).
I think that I have finally found the right mixture of spells to play domain zoo successfully again and I am very thankful for your feedback - please do not hesitate to fill this thread with new life

Hey just played a few games with your deck and am very impressed! Not only is it smooth and fun to play, it wins games! I am questioning your choice of not including the geist of st. traft and steppe lynx package. I am curious what your reasoning is for choosing tarmo and nactle over lynx and geist is. The later package is easier on the color requirements and has a little more offensive power. tomorrow I will playtest my idea and let you know what I find.
new players as they show up maybe twice with some budget deck they've spent the week designing and testing only to be beaten into oblivion by expensive decks they cannot hope to obtain and I think this is a tragedy.
Been messing around with dark confidant and I am really liking the results feels very suicidal aggro but the hands are just so much better especially the mulls . he lets you do insane things i just 2-0d melira pod off his back double trading down with finks getting blown out by DOJ overextended and still grind with them 17 turn victory game 1. he turns mulls to 5 card hands into turn 4 kills.. either way its really fun
Game 1: I was on the draw and my opponent had everything he needed. I Leaked one Scapeshift but it was followed by another turn after and I lost when he was like at 12 life.
Game 2: He kept a bit greedy hand and I didn't let him resolve too many ramp spells and my Delver carried me there with a wild Cat. He also landed Chalice of the Void with one counter but I already had Delver and a Nacatl on the field.
Game 3: I dropped turn one Delver and he answered with a Sakura-Tribe Elder. My Delver did not flip and I missed a land drop. Turn three I tried to Sleight of Hand which he countered and I missed second time my second land drop. Turn three he played Chalice of the Void with one and then I top decked couple of lands but my Delver never flipped and eventually he cast'd Scapeshift with full permission backup.
SB In: Negate, two Ancient Grudge (Game 3) - Out: Some combination of Tribal Flames and Paths.
Round three vs Goblins 2 - 1
Game 1: I was on the draw and he opened with a Legion Loyalist followed by turn two Krenko's Command. I pathed his turn three Mogg Warmarshal but he landed turn four Shared Animosity and attacked with five Goblins - shieet.
Game 2: He kept low land hand and I punished him for that with Double delver and multiple removals.
Game 3: I my opener was Wild Nacatl, Tarmogoyf, Tarmogoyf, Lightning Bolt, Mana Leak, Stomping Ground, Scalding Tarn. It was a 'snap keep' because of Tarmogoyfs and I was even able to draw two more of them after he Goblin Grenaded one of the down. He couldn't race my board at all and it was an easy win.
Game 1: I was on the draw but my opponent kept quite greedy hand with only mana dorks as mana fixers and when I bolted his Bird and Tribal Flamed a Wall of Roots he was unable to get into game fast enough. I was also lucky because my opener contained two Spell Pierces (incredibly terrible against Pod) which I used to counter his both Birthing Pods at the end of the game. Pretty easy win.
Game 2: He had perfect hand with couple of mana dorks, Finks, Pod and Path. He started to beat me down with Thrun backed up with double exalted effects from Hierarchs but eventually I ripped Fiery Justice from top of my deck But he top decked Spellskite and as he had creatures with casting cost of four and two he won with Kiki-Exarch combo.
Game 3: This was no game as I kept very greedy of one land and a Sleight of Hand which revealed me no lands. I had to keep that as my opponent instantly kept his hand and I knew that it was probably insanely good. I answered his turn one Hierach with a turn one Twisted Image but as I couldn't play anything but one Delver which never flipped so it was GG pretty fast.
Overall I am very satisfied with the list as I got beaten most of the time by my own draws (insanely low land counts) or absolutely nut draws of opponents (looking at you Scapeshift )
I was also forced to play with Sleight of Hands as I was impossible to get Serum Visions in time. Couple of times when I was in need of removals Sleight showed me double removal and I was forced to put one of the to the bottom of my deck. I didn't anyway lose any games because of Sleights.
So to say I have went off the beaten pact may be an understatement I'm
Playing this tonight I'll give a report. I will say in testing in mtgo its fun as ***** .
This was my list the only thing I would probly change is cutting a grudge or a wear/ tear for a 4th copy of thoughtseize possibly even a slaughter games or something was at least 1 artifact hate to heavy then again I didn't pair affinty but in my testing that was a good MU anyway
5 rounds went 3-1 from 3rd place I paired against the only 4-0 player and 2-0 him
Match 1 Beat monk white hate bears - easy MU kill his land hate guys fetch fast play yours win bob goyf and giest can all do work here as g2 you being in all the removal Pridemage since i saw a sword crushed him again
Beat loam 2-0 g1 we both mull to poop and my deck can kill you fast in topdeck mode he raven crimes me out after I puke some bolts a quick might if Alara on a snap then a flames game 2 he misses his turn 2 land drop this stumble cost him the game he had to loam t3 for 1 land I show to mercy and t4 him
Lost 1-2 bloom titan game 1 I get 6 land 5 land 0 land 0 land 0 land mulls lose no lands game 2 kill him t4 after thoughtseize his bloom into bob lost game 3 to a turn 2 hive mind + pact no thoughtseize
Beat 8 rack 2-1 game 1 to double Inqusition on both my bobs still get him to 5 game 4 mull to 4 cards and still beat him this decks surprisingly good hellbent running on fumes double Hierarch Beatdown after he snipes bob .... Again tribal flames saves the day game 3 we trade a lot with his seizes my removals snipes Geist. I topdeck goyf it dies topdeck another 5/6 it gets in once and dues I find bob who funds tribal and snap at 6 mana he's at 9 life hellbent in a Liliana
Match 5 I pair into the only unbeaten player from 3rd in standings no top 8 if I get him I win
He's on black white hate bears we both lead bobs but I went first I kill his he plays another it kill it again I run away with the game bob flipping lands digging me flames and bolts o my
Game 2 I get an insane hand and top decks it was a blowout I answer every threat his thoughtseize and shocking was doing my job for me goyf got in for 5 I to we were hellbent but I'm on bob he boarded his out ??? No clue why either way bob finds bolt boros charm with him at 7
All in all it was fun I got first place I payed in so I got great value will be playing this list again Dark Confidabt and tribal flames were the all stars tonite. Deck felt awesome and I actualy very much like my lighter fetch land all shock mana more and more as I play with it for a deck that actually wants all 5 colors.
Also played 1 game vs melira pod for fun and I dork into bob into Geist into flames + might of Alara ;)he blocks and trades out my Geist kills bob but he's pretty much dead as I'm palming snap snap tribal
Edit : instead of spamming posts I'm just gonna leave my current build here the only changes I made were adding a slaughter games and 4th thoughtseize over grim lava mancer and chained to the rocks in my SB, after more testing chain is just much worse than path in this version running 3 snap and was over kill. Grim lava also fights my snaps and goyfs and I have plenty of removal spells anyway and less fetch lands, the way i built the MUs they are good in I'm already doing better than normal zoo. The 4th seize was a must and slaughter games just reads "win the game" against some difficult decks like as nausam and scape shift while being pretty damn good on other match ups like twin and other combo and some control decks.
So I have been playing my deck a lot I'm gonna right a little guide on playing it as I'm having tins if success and would love suggestions and other to test it .
This is my current list for modern. I feel timid calling this a zoo deck as it is not what one would think about when they think of zoo. All of the agressive 1 drops have been cut. Yes even wild nacatyl. Noble Hierarch is our proactive 1 drop play it sets up the fastest starts in the deck powering out turn 2 giest of saint Traft as well as being able to save 2 life droping a turn 2 dark confidant off pulling a turn 1 overgrown tomb. With a curve that stops at 3 and only has giest In that slot the slight damage taken from confidant is massively outweighed by the ability to constantly make land drops whole maintaining enough buisness to kill our opponent with burn very quickly. The altered mana base with less fetch lands both allows for easier access to all 5 colors for casting bob as well as taking less damage and making it easy to play thoughtseize out of our sideboard. The core power creatures in our build are tarmogoyf a nearly unboltable threat who gets more powerful when we bring in thoughtseize and later in game as we trade bolts and helix with out opponents creatures. We prefer to see bob or giest early while goyf is stronger later in the game. In playing this deck many many times this last week I can count on 1 hand the number of times bob has killed me mostly against burn who will still want to kill him out the gate. Helix also combats the life loss we take bing a 6 point swing in damage or healing 3 as we trade is invaluable. Dark confidant in addition to the card advantage he provides will also get us VCA by swinging in for 2 whole we trade bolts with blockers making him more and more powerful
As hand sizes dwindle. Once our opponent is low our massive burn suite can be sent to the face letting us do 10+ damage in a single turn out of no where. While mutagenic growth is fairly useless here in protecting our creatures Might of Alara provides us with the most efficient burn spell in the deck at a 5 to 1 damage to mana ratio. In addition when combine with boros charm we can do truly insane ammounts of damage not turned offline by leylines. We can kill turn 3 by curving a dork into giest into Boros charm and might of Alara. Alara also gives us more 1 drops on curve and gives us 10 surprise damage at 4 with snap caster . The addition of boros charm gives us more copy's of tribal flames to win games hellbent as well as answer sweepers game 2. Snapcaster Mage gives us additional tribal flames bolts or paths as we need them much like path we play 3 main deck because we want to see one most games but not 2 in our opener. Path gives us answeres to unboltable threats allowing us to swing in and then burn out decks playing higher curve cards.
The best card in our sideboard is thoughtseize it comes in in full force aginst every combo deck in the format that can out race us or go over our heads. I'm addition it snipes cards that otherwise blow out our weak mana base such as blood moon or sundering titan.it is also a house aginst control decks and blue based mid range decks for it's abilty to snipe key cards and form a solid plan with perfect information and lets us "jund" people
We also have 2 pride mages and wear / tear to combat blood moon and leyline of sanctity post board and they all have the benefit of naturally hating out affinty who will bring in moon and any other deck playing important or back breaking artifacts or enchantments this is an insane amount of decks from pod to twin to ad nausam to tezzeret our 4 non creature hates in grudge pride Mage and wear tear are very important.
Pillar of flame is for recursive threats out of pod like kitchen finks and murderous redcap and voice as well as hard to deal with aggressive creatures like strangle root giest and grave crawler.
In addition it's extra good cards aginst already easy match ups like delver being able to go to the face has generally been good but I have not tested magma spray. This also comes in against hate bears and well any match with powerful 2 or less toughness creatures
The 4th path comes in against decks with threats we otherwise cannot deal with such as wurmcoil engine or master of waves in addition to deck that play recursive threats or tarmogoyfs.
Elspeth is a great card for jumping giest goyf or bob over a clogged board essentially dealing 9 + damage be getting them
Through and potentially fogging our opponent so we can burn them out even against decks like trim it serves a similar purpose to path or seize in getting us thier over wurmcoil especially when our seize had to snipe a pyroclasm counter spell or sundering titan.
Canonist and rule of law take care of storm ad nausam and are almost as good if not better against living end than graveyard hate cards. They also deal with or handcuff other assorted combo decks in the format like grissle cannon.
Slaughter games is our dedicated scape shift hate card it's also fairly good against decks like bloom titan . It also stops ad nausam cold who will already be slowing themself down to leyline us.
Our worst MY is burn I have not made consession to this deck in my sideboard but spellskite is a consideration.
All In all this deck had very good match ups against all the fair decks in the format and a sideboard that allows it to take down the decks that are not. Bob not only allows for better reach but gives us better mulligans and the large ammounts if burn allow us to have robust topdecks hellbent. Hope you enjoyed the read and test the deck it's loads of fun!
Sup old friend I highly recommended it! I have had a blast playing it so far I haven't even really looked to see if I want anything from m15 I'd love someone else testing it. Since your interested I'll post my SB and obera strategies against most the decks when I get a chance

That'd be wonderful! It would certainly enable me to hit the ground running with the list.
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 wear // tear
+ 4 thoughtseize
+ 1 Path to exile
Optional + 1 ancient grudge ( if you see spellskite game 1)
- 2 noble Hierarch
- 2 giest
- 2 Boros charm
- 2 might of Alara
- 1 lightning helix ( if bring in grudge )
This is a fairly good MU. The game slows down as your holding up removal so we don't need 4 giest which makes noble less important and we want to draw removals it also is 1 less card to get blown out by electrolyze on a noble confidant draw. Pride Mage and wear / tear answer blood moon and splinter twin As well a a batterskull and spellskite path answers exarch where bolt cannot grudge is good if they play spellskite. Thiughtseize is incredible as it lets you know exactly what they have and snipe thier best card they present weak damage and are forced to trade out your confidants or get overwhelmed by CA goyf gets huge game 2 with seize and they have a hard time taking care of it. Giest is still good if you land it but to risky to tap to early and drawing multiple is not good. Might and charm are not as good withot max giest and can't trade with thier dudes so they get pulled this should be a very easy MU they have to like get off mutiple 2:1 exltrolyze blood moon you or have you mull to 3 or you should win. Game 1 is harder but not unwinable rug twin is even easier since no blood moon and probly no spell skite. Against tarmotwin I expect anger of the gods and will keep in Boros charm and pull All my mana dorks if you see anger from normal twin you ca do the same
Pod
+ 2 pillar of flame
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 ancient grudge
+ 1 path to exile
+ 1 elspeth
- 2 might of Alara
- 2 Geist
- 2 boros charm
- 1 noble Hierarch
Another creature match up. They don't have many ways to shoot at your dark confidant this is your best card it feeds you enough removal to kill a thier creatures even making bad trades against persist . Pride Mage answers pod and spell skite without diluting damage when they don't draw them grudge kills them twice. Pillar of flame and path exile recursive threats like kitchen finks and redcap which are some of the best cards they get for the MU. They can block giest and again Alara and charm don't shoot down and lose power without Geist and have a harder time getting through. Trade with them stick a confidant keep them off combo use goyf your remaining Geist and flames to finish them off Elspeth can destroy them in quick fashion once you grind down thier hand
Tron
- 4 lightning helix
- 2 tarmogoyf
+ 4 thought seize
+ 1 path to exile
+ 1 Elspeth
Stick giest or confidant ASAP use seize to strip pyroclasm sundering titan Karn counters path or jump over wurm coil burn them out before they can connect with a good threat use might of Alara early as possible save tribal flames / charms for the kill if you don't get a dork vs r/g feel free to fast fetch to turn 1 bolt fairly straight forward they are threat light eat them all up. You can opt to not bring in path 3 and keep a helix or goyf if you want we dint want to draw double path but drawing no path or seize is worse
This is a good match up bring in extra removal for the land hate trade creatures with bolts. Fetch early to dodge hate. Imeadiatly trade with arbiter and drop dudes behind it we don't need hate for swords as we plan to kill all thier guys you can trade a charm for a Pridemage but I prefer the burn as we send quite a but down stairs.
Jund - it's not a great match up but it's not horrible I don't have a ton of cards I want to bring in here but Elspeth is a house
- 2 lightning helix
+ 1 path to exile
+ 1 elspeth Knight errant
Kill dark confidant on sight path away goyfs and corsairs land Geist ASAP and try to clear him a path use might of Alara fast dint wait for 5. Attack then hard and fast. If they clear your team ignore thier dudes send the burn upstairs.
U/R delver
Easy match up
- 2 might of Alara
- 1 boros charm
+ 2 pillar of flame
+ 1 path to exile
Kill delver and pyromamcer crush them
UWR Geist / UWR flash
- 2 helix
- 2 bolt
- 1 might of Alara
+ 4 thoughtseize
+ 1 Elspeth
Bolt and helix are fairly weak we want some helix to heal might is ok but we want all our thought seize and Elspeth. Land a Geist / goyf and kill them fast. Send all your burn upstairs against rev decks to get them dead before it's online.
Affinity
- 4 giest
- 2 might of Alara
- 2 boros charm
+ 1 ancient grudge
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 wear // tear
+ 2 pillar of flame
+ 1 path
+ 1 thoughtseize
Trade kill spells liberally fetch your basic plains for blood moon save the artifact / enchant hate for plating / blood moon try to save path fur ravenger and master ignore stuff like memnites and ornithopters don't get hit by blood moon or playing and you should win
Ad Nausaum
+ 1 wear // tear
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 Ethersworn Canonist
+ 1 rule of law
+ 4 thoughtseize
+ 1 slaughter games
- 3 path
- 4 helix
- 2 bolt
- 2 snap caster
Land Canonist or rule if law use thoughtseize to disrupt Thier hand
Use Pridemage and wear / tear to kill sanctity and unlife.
Kill thier amulet seize thier hand kill them ASAP burn yourself as much as you want. If your hand is not very fast you better have an artifact kill or thought seize
Living end
+ 1 slaughter games
+ 1 rule of law
+ 1 Canonist
- 3 goyf
Hard MU kill them fast or pray you drew Canonist or rule of law slaughter games can be too slow but it's worth a shot send ALL your burn up top path whatever comes in from
The GY you can force the turn 3 LE seize is not so great here as they have a lot of cascades and cantrips with no counters or GY hate if your hands slow mull to a hate card or faster hand if you do land the hate card you will have all the time you need
Storm -
+ 1 Canonist
+ 1 rule of law
+ 4 thought seize
+ 2 Pridemage
- 1 goyf
- 3 path
- 4 helix
If you land a hate card they are pretty much done. Pridemage kills pyro withot losing damage goldfish as fast as you can save seize for thier turn 2-3 as they will cantrip into thier habd the first few turns auto kill electromancer
I'll be merging these deck in with Zoo (Domain/tribal flames with Small Zoo). Since pat cox did his thing, its no longer "What ever gets most aggro in, boros, zoo, guide and lynx, whatever" Its Zoo with the added domain element.
Like wise, The Zoo thread will be getting a reboot to reflect this change too, and I'll be asking people put a little reminder on their deck if its straight naya or domain.

I just tried your deck at a small modern event. I won 2-0 vs UWR control and lost 1-2 vs Melira Pod. I had Goblin Guide instead of Delver of Secrets (call it a knee-jerk reaction after having delver flip problems in my playtesting).

Round one BYE
Round two vs Scapeshift 1 - 2
SB In: 2 Fiery Justices, Destructive Revelry - Out: 3 Spell Pierces
Round four vs Kiki Pod 1 - 2
SB In: 2 Fiery Justices, 3 Qasali Pridemages, 2 Bant Charms, 1 Twisted Image, 1 Combust - Out: 3 Spell Pierces, 2 Mana Leaks, 2 Remands, 2 Spell Snares
Thank you!

That'd be wonderful! It would certainly enable me to hit the ground running with the list.
Match up 1 twin red / blue
White / gw / white black Hate bears
Creature based
- 2 might
- 1 charm
+ 2 pillar
+ 1 path
This is a good match up bring in extra removal for the land hate trade creatures with bolts. Fetch early to dodge hate. Imeadiatly trade with arbiter and drop dudes behind it we don't need hate for swords as we plan to kill all thier guys you can trade a charm for a Pridemage but I prefer the burn as we send quite a but down stairs.
Jund - it's not a great match up but it's not horrible I don't have a ton of cards I want to bring in here but Elspeth is a house
- 2 lightning helix
+ 1 path to exile
+ 1 elspeth Knight errant
Kill dark confidant on sight path away goyfs and corsairs land Geist ASAP and try to clear him a path use might of Alara fast dint wait for 5. Attack then hard and fast. If they clear your team ignore thier dudes send the burn upstairs.
U/R delver
Easy match up
- 2 might of Alara
- 1 boros charm
+ 2 pillar of flame
+ 1 path to exile
Kill delver and pyromamcer crush them
UWR Geist / UWR flash
- 2 helix
- 2 bolt
- 1 might of Alara
+ 4 thoughtseize
+ 1 Elspeth
Bolt and helix are fairly weak we want some helix to heal might is ok but we want all our thought seize and Elspeth. Land a Geist / goyf and kill them fast. Send all your burn upstairs against rev decks to get them dead before it's online.
Affinity
- 4 giest
- 2 might of Alara
- 2 boros charm
+ 1 ancient grudge
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 wear // tear
+ 2 pillar of flame
+ 1 path
+ 1 thoughtseize
Trade kill spells liberally fetch your basic plains for blood moon save the artifact / enchant hate for plating / blood moon try to save path fur ravenger and master ignore stuff like memnites and ornithopters don't get hit by blood moon or playing and you should win
Ad Nausaum
+ 1 wear // tear
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 Ethersworn Canonist
+ 1 rule of law
+ 4 thoughtseize
+ 1 slaughter games
- 3 path
- 4 helix
- 2 bolt
- 2 snap caster
Land Canonist or rule if law use thoughtseize to disrupt Thier hand
Use Pridemage and wear / tear to kill sanctity and unlife.
Bloom titan
- 3 path
- 4 helix
- 2 goyf
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 grudge
+ 4 thought seize
+ 1 slaughter games
Scapeshift
+ 4 thoughtseize
+ 1 slaughter games
- 3 path
- 2 helix
Snipe thier hand slaughter games stops them cold try to fish fast and disrupt before combo turn
Burn - this is the worst MU ever
- 4 bob
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 wear // tear ( moon)
+ 1 Elspeth
They don't shock themselves to burn hopefully they draw creatures and you draw helix we don't have much here good luck
8 rack
- 3 path
- 2 might of Alara
+ 1 elspeth
+ 2 Pridemage
+ 1 wear // tear
+ 1 grudge
This my is fairly even we are very good hellbent land as many creatures as you can and burn thier face. trade artifact hate with racks / shrieking .
Merfolk
- 2 Boros charm
+ 1 path to exile
+ 1 pillar of flame
Save path for MOW if you can trade with thier merfolk confidant pulls his wight here letting you trade with the lords all day then finish them off.

Like wise, The Zoo thread will be getting a reboot to reflect this change too, and I'll be asking people put a little reminder on their deck if its straight naya or domain.
I'll be doing that tonight.
