What's the general thought on Hero of Bladehold vs Brimaz? I know it's in the primer but I didn't find the coverage in-depth enough. Anyone care to shed some more light on this?
I prefer Hero of Bladehold due to the anthem effect and because it fits better in the "curve". Brimaz competes for a very clogged 3 drop slot. In general Brimaz is assumed to be better on defense due to the vigilance. He can also create tokens the turn he comes down unlike Hero which must be able to attack before you get the tokens.

I'm sorry if I'm missing anything obvious, but how does he make a token just by coming down?

He can block the turn he comes down...as opposed to hero who has to swing the next turn

So I'm new to MTG but I bought the modern event deck a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying the B/W tokens. I've been going to a local card shop on Wednesdays to play Modern and am liking the format. There is a Pro Tour qualifier for Modern in my city next month and I'm thinking about participating. So far I've acquired a lot of cards for B/W tokens that are used currently and some that I haven't seen played at all but I feel really fit the deck. I have been using proxies for the fetch lands while playing casual but am considering buying them(These are the last of the expensive cards I've yet to get). I've been watching countless hours of recent Modern play to grasp the different types of decks that are popular in the current meta game and have been looking at a lot of gameplay of B/W Tokens against the popular archetypes that are being used. I'm fairly confident at this stage that if I practice a bit more and buy a few more cards I can make a very competitive deck with a sideboard that should be able to counter most of the popular decks in the format. Is it worth investing more in this deck or should I settle for saving for one of the more prominent decks being used if I want to do well in the qualifier (I don't expect to win or anything but I would like to be competitive)?
Brimaz seems to be the more popular choice as he is he defends well and Hero doesn't. The fact that Brimaz is hit by Inquisition of Koziliek and Abrupt Decay is unfortunate though.

I think its still a split atm, Brimaz works better vs midrange and aggro meta since he comes down sooner and blocks better, hero does better vs control and combo since untapping with hero often means you win. Brimaz also competes with Mirran Crusader who some people swear by. Brimaz does grind out games way better than Hero though and is very good vs goyf etc. Personally though I prefer hero since he is closest thing we have to an oops I win move which is something modern decks need to have.

Just remember that even those these tokens are spirits they do not have flying. The last thread pretty much decided this card was simply not good enough and can be too easily played around.
This may be a decent sideboard card against a meta with a lot of sweepers but Burrenton Forge-Tender or Brave the Elements works better against red sweepers and Rootborn Defenses works against all others. Also, simply not over-extending and slow rolling your threats onto the table tends to devalue your opponent's sweepers. I also like to hold onto a Raise the Alarm after playing a Lingering Souls or Spectral Procession. Keep mana up and drop the tokens after the opponent's sweeper so you can untap and attack with them. Keep a Lingering Soul Flashback ready in the yard to quickly rebuild when you know you are playing against UWR control. Elspeth and your anthems can carry you through the match. Tidehollow, if you run it, should always grab any sweepers you see.

This is precisely why I like Hero of Bladehold. One of the best things about tokens is that it naturally devalues a lot of your opponent's removal. Brimaz turning on Inquisition or Abrupt Decay does stink.

To the OP: I'm quite impressed by and totally agree with your opinion that Elspeth Tirel is often the best planeswalker for this deck, even better than Elspeth, Knight-Errant.
A few more card options that came to mind while reading the primer were Castigate as an alternative to Tidehollow Sculler if more discard is needed and some of the other 2 CMC black removal spells in Modern such as Smother and Go for the Throat.
any thoughts on spiritbonds or obelisk of urd from M15?
Spiritbonds
1W
Enchantment
Whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, you may pay W. If you do, put a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
1W, sacrifice a Spirit: Target non-Spirit creature gains indestructible until end of turn. (Effects that say "destroy" don't destroy it. A creature with indestructible can't be destroyed by damage.)
Obelisk of Urd
6
Artifact
Convoke (Your creatures can help cast this spell. Each creature you tap while casting this spell pays for 1 or one mana of that creature's color.)
As Obelisk of Urd enters the battlefield, choose a creature type.
Creatures you control of the chosen type get +2/+2.

Spiritbonds is bad because we really don't play that many non-token creatures... Obelisk of Urd is definitely a win-more card, plus you have to tap your dudes and cant attack the turn it comes down (Assuming you use convoke)
It really is too bad, I haven't seen many cards for BW tokens yet in M15...

Its worth nothing that Obelisk of Urd alos only buffs creatures of a particular type and not all of the tokens we play are of the same creature type which makes the card even worse. If that were an effect tokens wanted I would recommend Spear of Heliod anyway as it buffs tokens as well as regular creatures and is not limited by creature type. It also provides a source of repeatable removal in a deck that often has enough creatures to be able to hold mana up for the ability if we so chose.

I'm thinking about getting back into modern, but have a quick question about bwtokens.
Why no bitterblossoms?
Its too slow, eats your already dwindling life points away, & if you run Honor of the pure since the tokens are black they don't get the bonus.
