I was wondering if you guys had any advice on a budget deck that could be upgraded to a non-budget over time. All the deck ideas I see here are great but none of them allow for more powerful/expensive cards to be included over time. I don't necessarily want a deck that is competitive right of the bat but I would like one that can do ok as it grows to become an more expensive version. Part of my issue is that i am new to modern and magic so I don't have a huge knowledge of budget cards from before innistrad block. If possible I would like an interactive deck that would be fun to play against as my group is not huge.
Thanks!
I will definitely check out UR delver it sounds fairly interesting. I also cooked up this list last night : (I cant post links so DOT = . ) http://tappedout DOT net/mtg-decks/dredgevine-budget/
I tried to cheapen dredgevine by reducing it just BG instead of Jund. In goldfishing it can usually kill turn 4-5 but stalls fairly often since it needs Lotleth + 2 gravecrawler + 2+ vengevine to do so and there isnt much card draw / digging effects.
I have looked at living end in the past but I have always had a few hangups. The deck seems uninteractive. Im worried id get bored playing it and my opponents wouldnt want to play me after awhile (small group so being fun to play against is important)
also the land base looks fairly expensive due to fetches and shock which + fulminator mage seems really pricy
I have actually and I was very intrigued. The main question I have is how easy is flipping delver turn 2/3? in standard it happened all the time but they had ponder + preordain rather than just serum visions. Other than that it looks pretty fun although I don't like young pyromancer as a card really.
Generally they use black for discard/removal and use white for Path to Exile and some aggro creatures.
As your budget increases you can get Marsh Flats, Dark Confidants, and Lilianna of the Veil.
B/W Tokens is an aggro variant, and B/W Card Advantage (Dead Guy Ale?) are two decent decks that have room to play with card selection and strategy.
B/W is very powerful for a two colorful combination. It pushes proactive strategy with reliable combo disruption via discard.
White also has access to powerful sideboard cards. It can just be hard to compete with the versatile removal and card advantage of UWR and the raw power of Jund GB/x decks.
I like the BW idea how would you budget those? From what I know Dark Confidant and liliana are very hard/impossible to replace and that mana base seems pretty costly but do able. That doesnt leave a lot of my budget left for the creatures and such though..
I have been Playing a budget Gruul zoo deck, and there is vast rooms to grow...Gruul to naya to knight of Rel etc... Or stay gruul and grow into Goblin Guides etc...Check out the Budget zoo Primer; Lantern has made very informative videos. My budget Gruul can easily threaten T3 and pull out T4 wins fairly consistently.
Edit1: I play on MTGO so shock lands aren't too expensive (the price should drop for a while after they fall out of type 2) here is my current list
Deck Plays very fast; If not in budget Thrun and Ooze add mid late game versus certain decks but are not necessary. Pillars are in there mainly against Kitchen Finks and Voice of Resurgence But help versus all the cheap first strikers like Thalia and Mirran Crusader. God hand can lay down T1 Experiment one, turn two BTE into Jund Hackblade evolving E1 Twice and swinging for 6 T3 lay a boar or a ram-gang and swing harder. Can beat out many slower decks like like scapeshift and many times storm and burn. Pyroclasm and Anger of gods hurts bad. Which is why I am upgrading to Naya, because of Path to Exile and Boros Charm.

The Dead Guy Ale-BW Card advantage deck has some irreplacable costs in it, like Lily and Confidant.
But you could start out playing the BW tokens list and slowly buy Bobs/Lily's if you want to be more controlling.
As far as reducing mana base, you can play less fetchlands and more Painlands Caves of Koilos and Isolated Chapels, temple of silence, basics, and any cheap B/W lands you can find.
The fetchlands give perfect mana and reduce the lands you draw per game, but are expensive.
Hero of Bladehold and Mirran Crusader can also threaten to win the game on their own and are difficult to remove against certain decks/draws.
The post above this is also strong, stating that Gruul Zoo has room to grow and can win consistently.
You don't have to have tarmogoyfs to kill people quickly, although your deck loses to combo usually, and there isn't much room to switch strategies, it's always superfast aggro with some creatures/spells/lands based on budget.
Discard away problems, play creatures pump creatures. With a better mana-base i would use Spectral Procession, speaking of mana base if you can afford them Shock land ( Godless Shrine) Sideboard is widely meta specific obviously. but Tokens is cool because there are many ways you can go. Many use them is soul sisters deck for life gain. Some play more discard of creature hate. IF you can't afford the inquisition a card like Raven's Crime May be more suitable for repeatable discard since this deck tops out at 4 CMC.
The B/W tokens deck is what the Modern Event Deck is you can start with that if you'd like.
I have a pod deck thats pod without the expensive cards and I already owned the Birthing pods and picked up the key cards during Modern Masters. Currently playing shocks and checks and not fetchlands.
UR storm is an aquired taste but its really cheap for how powerful it is.
Im gonna go ahead and try the magic event deck, but the 60$ dollar price tag (yeah amazon!) leaves about 40 bucks of my iniatal budget for upgrades any advice? that could buy a playset of shocks but is there a better value out there?

A couple Thoughtseize would help the deck quite a bit, Sorin, Lord of Innistrad, is another PW that is great in the deck, If not wanting to shell out for Thoughtseize, another couple inquisition of Kozilek ( need ways to get the board wipes out of their hands) I would also find room for a 4th Zealous persecution main part of the deck and one of the best Combat tricks in the Format.

I would recommend the B/W tokens list for its mix of proactive aggression and discard to remove key cards from combo or removal like (Anger of the Gods, Maelstrom Pulse, Supreme Verdict.
