Merchant + arena usualy help taking control out of the game
Can somebody please explain why to use this deck instead of just going with typical Jund or using an aggro deck? While Merchant is good, is he good enough to be worth building around making him good? Even in best case scenarios, he is far from an outright win

Gray merchant doesn't need to connect to kill. It's rarely GG by itself, but it's usually a fairly back breaking position.
Also the cards that support are fairly strong in modern. Phyrexian Obliterator I believe is somewhat underrated as it requires an immediate answer. Geralf's Messenger is surprisingly resilient against the format.
Perhap's it's not the best deck at the moment, but personally I want to see if it's worth playing. Some of the lines of play look fun and are quite strong.
I have been running a very similar list, but I am finding that agrro has been a bit of a problem. We really cannot block anything until turn 4 (gravecrawler, bloodghast, and geralf's comes into play tapped) therefore we are somewhat reliant on early kill spells. If we waste our kill spells early in the game, we cannot kill their bombs.
What do you think about replacing gravecrawler with will-o'-the-wisp and adding some swords?

How does your deck do against combo decks?
i play more discard on sideboard and Surgical Extraction soo if the combo is not very resilient i go to late game easily. infest and discard for agro.
I hosted a modern tournament with some friends yesterday and my deck won the tournament. There were not any tier 1 decks being played but there was some good variety. The decks were: Merfolk (he didn't have Aether Vial but it was a pretty typical fish deck), White Knights (it was really aggressive and had several pro-black creatures), a zombie deck, and then a few other home brews. I plan on taking this deck to FNM in the near future and I will post the results.
Card selection and reasoning: Will-O'-The-Wisp: This deck needs some board presence in the 1-drop spot and it is either this or gravecrawler. Will-O'-The-Wisp survives a lot of common kill spells, can block for days, and will hold a sword like a boss. When the two drops are bloodghast and gerfal's, this deck cannot block any creatures until turn 4 therefore I feel that this a much better choice than gravecrawler.
Bloodghast and Geralf's Messenger: Amazing resilient creatures. Against any aggro deck, I usually sided the bloodghasts out for kill spells and stromgald crusader (if they had path to exile) or vampire nighthawk.
Inquisition of Kozilek and Duress: Inquisition is there to get path to exile, creatures, and combo pieces out of their hand while duress is mostly only for mana leaks, path to exile, and planeswalkers. I don't feel like taking two damage is worth it to run thoughtseize when these cards can grab everything that I am worried about.
Geth's Verdict: To get rid of pro-black and hexproof creatures.
Infest: A great sweeper that doesn't kill most of our guys. If I could afford damnation, I would probably play that instead so will-o'-the-wisp doesn't get hosed.

A member of my playtesting team is trying to fine tune a mono black devotion list. He has splashed green for Deathrite (the smallest of splashes)
A change that was implemented this last week was 4x Fulminator Mages mainboard... and it's done some serious work for him. You can put opponents off their colors, shut down tron game one, or once in a while mana screw someone over completely.
This version of the deck has some great upsides: better devotion, better drain(Kalastria), and it can actually use the attack step. The downsides: It abuses Prophecy and Crypt less, as it has only 1 sac outlet
Why not run Bloodthrone Vampire over Kalastria Highborn, then? 2-drop, fits tribe requirement, etc. Only gives 1 devotion, but I feel like you really need the full 8 sac outlets in your version of the deck.

My 360 Peasant+ Cube!. Modern borders where possible, usually with the newest (or "best") art, and always the most readable card text. I also run all 10 painlands. My playgroup is super casual, as we have a fair number of newer or less experienced players. Typically we draft with 4 to 6 people, using 5 packs of 9.
I'll do that today, thanks.
I tried out a new build running Nether Traitor and Viscera Seer last week and it went very well. Viscera Seer makes sure your guys don't get PTE'd, and Nether Traitor is just another really resilient guy. I also added a 1 of Lashwrithe, but have thought about making it something different, since the PT boost usually isn't great based on our low land count.

"It's like some kind of Voltron... made of elephants??"
After some extensive play testing, I can confidently say the Nether Traitor/Bloodghast/Viscera Seer Engine is very powerful. Opposing Leyline of the void seems to be the only big fear outside hyper aggro. I'm almost considering trying to fit Blood artist into the deck.

We lost DRS and that blows really bad. I am in agreement that gaining Bitterblossom helps, but I think that requires even more dedication to the Blood Artist plan, which I have been doing anyway. I do wonder if it is important to increase the land count a small bit because of the loss of DRS? Ill work with it a little and see, but Viscera Seer seems to help get what you want when you want it.

Wow I went to update the Primer with DRS being banned, and the website change completely erased most of it. Ill have it fixed as soon as I can, and Ill have the info be as current as possible.
One more thing to note on the banning, is that we are a deck that synergizes with the graveyard, and while we lose DRS, he also is no longer there in almost every G or B matchup to mess with our plans.

Sword of Light and Shadow seems very powerful now. Great against opposing BB tokens. Great card advantage for powerful creatures like Obliterator/Gatekeeper or Fulminator Mage out of the board. The Sword will always have lots of bodies thanks to Bitterblossom. Abrupt Decay seems as powerful as ever, more so in many ways.
Arena is such a beating with Obliterator. It's also pretty sweet to tap down a blocker to get a Sword hit in.
I've been testing this list since the banning. I've only tested against RWU control, rdw and RU combo. The deck has preformed very very well in these match ups. So I figured I would share my findings.
Lands =
3x nykthos, shrine to nyx
19x swamp
Creatures =
4x phyrexian obliterator
4x gray merchant of asphodel
3x vampire Nighthawk
2x gatekeeper of Malakir
other =
4x inquisition of kozilek
4x nights whisper
3x Liliana of the veil
3x disfigure
3x surgical extraction
2x victim of night
2x duress
2x whip of erebos
2x bitterblossom
The list is a little rough now but it is performing well. I'm going to run it at my local shop this Saturday at our weekly modern event. The meta is fairly diverse with some top decks and home brews all over. The side board is just thrown together for now but will be put together by then. I will report my results soon after the tournament.
I would appreciate any input

Bloodghast and Geralf's Messenger: Amazing resilient creatures. Against any aggro deck, I usually sided the bloodghasts out for kill spells and stromgald crusader (if they had path to exile) or vampire nighthawk.
Gatekeeper of Malakir: A kill spell and a decent creature.
Phyrexian Obliterator: This card ends games quickly.
Gray Merchant of Asphodel: When you have resilient one, two, and three drops, this card is amazing.

Phyrexian Arena: Card advantage.
Swords: These cards are finishers in this deck.
The mana curve is:
1 drops: 8
2 drops: 9
3 drops: 13 (I counted gatekeeper as a 3-drop)
4 drops: 3
5 drops: 3
After playing yesterday, I would say that Nykthos is close to the cutting block, but maybe I can find room for a profane command or a death cloud.
