Your opponent is obsessive-compulsive, and cannot resist cleaning up the messy room. The room is so large and messy that by the time they're done, they're exhausted and are now down by 2 life. Then you pay 5 mana to mess the room up again.
Ok so lets brew with what we know from the new set.
I'd like to try Eidolon of the Great Revel. But what comes out what comes in. For this exercise I'm going to play my large tourney brew, not something geared towards a specific meta which may or may not be occurring around me.
This just doesn't feel like a main deck card for me. So I'll take the safe road. -2 Dragon's claws +2 g8t rev.
so eidelon is our solution to storm? is there any other use for it in other match-up? our sb is limited, I would suggest cards that can deal with more different deck though.
If you want a direct solution to storm Ash Zealot can provide that as well. I like Eidelon because I see it as a card which can address more than just one match up.
Trying out this deck list for a more aggro build.
3x Stormbreath dragon
4x Boros Reckoner
4x Ash Zealot
2X Batterskull
3x Koth of the Hammer
4x Bloodmoon
2x Relics of Progenitus
3x Anger of God
2x Volcanic Fallout
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Skred
2x Banefire
21x Snow covered Mountain
2x Scrying Sheet
I am still thinking of reducing bloodmoon and replace with magus of the moon for more beatdown.
it adopts a more aggressive stance by pushing for damage with disruption in the form of bloodmoon and such. might remove relics of progenitus completely and replace with another koth or Chandra pyromancer.
I've played multiple games against my friend's modern decks, and have had great results.
Post-board sweepers will tear through Combo Elves. Blood Moon also shut down the blue mana for Beck // Call. Affinity eats sweepers as well, and post-board the matchup only got better. Merfolk was a little bit tougher, but post SB Volcanic Fallout and Anger of the Gods, combined with good spot removal were quite good. I played against Bogles, and frankly I'm
not sure how I kept winning. I suppose he kept bad hands. Post SB should be a better matchup due to Chalice of the Void, but even Pre-board games I was winning easily. I suppose I got lucky with turn 2 Volcanic Fallout to take care of his first turn play.
EDIT: Just realized I'm running 61 cards. I can probably cut a coldsteel heart or something.
Nice list. Did you ever wish you'd done a 3-2 on Koth/Chandra?
Not really. Koth is a card I want to see every game. Chandra, while powerful, doesn't win games on her own. She's better in longer games, but isn't game-winning on her own.
playing skred red for the past few local tournaments in the paper world. result mostly is 2-1.
win against America control, melira pod, scapeshift, g(r) tron, burn, affinity. jund, bogle, infect, lving end
Loss against U-tron, Rock, Naya, merfolk, tarmo twin, splinter twin
list I am playing with changes along the way.
3x stormbreath dragon
4x boros reckoner
3x simian spirit guide
2x magus of the moon
1x batterskull
4x koth of the hammer
4x bloodmoon
3x relics of progenitus
2x volcanic fallout
3x pyroclasm
4x lightning bolt
4x skred
21x snow covered mountain
2x scrying sheet
sideboard
3x chalice of the void
2x ratchet bomb
2x dismember
2x combust
2x torpor orb
2x shatter storm
2x sowing salt
I went to a small 3 round tournament today. I didn't do too terribly well. My local meta is mostly tier 2 and less decks, and this was a different shop with considerably better players.
Of the 3 matches, I went 1-2.
Game 1 against Melira Pod:
He went infinite pretty quick, via Chord of Calling. The next turn, I got a Koth emblem, and proceeded to lock him out of the game entirely. He drew out his deck before I did. Game 2 I lost to a Thrun followed up by Sigarda. Game 3 I swept him. I'm still feeling pretty good about winning against melira pod after going infinite.
Game 2 against Tarmo-Twin.
I don't know what I'm playing until it's too late. He combos off on turn 4. Game 2 I'm doing my best to play around the twin combo, holding Combust in my hand for most of the game. I ride to victory off of 2 Stormbreath dragons. Game 3 I'm still holding up Combust, but didn't play aggressively and ultimately lost to a pair of Goyfs. Had I been playing out my dragons and Reckoners, the game may have ended differently. It turns out he didn't even have the combo in hand until the turn he killed me anyway. Had I played differently, I might have been able to squeeze out a win.
Game 3 against UG Tron.
Game 1 he has a turn 3 Tron up and running, followed by a Gifts Ungiven into a Mindslaver lock. Game 2 I drop a turn 2 Magus of the Moon, followed by a Blood Moon. He O-Stones my stuff, only to find me casting yet another blood moon. I proceed to topdeck into nothing but lands, Blood Moon effects, and Skred. I eventually lose many turns later from 2 copies of Wurmcoil Engine. I blame this one on my deck screwing me, but it happens.
All in all, I'm pleased with how the night ended. I didn't place well, but I'm proud of my victory over Pod, and I learned a good bit about sideboarding versus certain matchups that I hadn't played against before. As I said, my LGS is fairly casual, and as such, I don't have many opportunities to play against truly powerful decks.
On a side note, I won multiple games against the janky Blistercoil Weird storm deck, and went 2-1 against UWR midrange (although these were both friendly, casual games without sideboards).
I am considering taking this deck to GP Minneapolis and was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions or tips for a player who is newer to the deck. Also, does anyone have a feel for how this deck does against the most popular decks right now such as pod,splinter-twin and others?
Thank you for all of the help!!
I Find combust, dismember, torpor orb and chalice of the void to be quite indispensable in the sideboard. Ratchet bomb, sowing salt, shatterstorm or shattering spree is more dependant on the meta matchup. pithing needle is also a good option against certain deck type.
Against Pod, side in torpor orb, shattering spree or shatterstorm
against twin, sideboard in combust and dismember
against scapeshift, side in sowing salt
against tron, side in sowing salt
against affinity, side in shattering spree or shatterstorm
against naya, ratchet bomb, dismember
against merfolk, ratchet bomb, combust, dismember
against 8rack, shattering spree, chalice and ratchetbomb
Spirit Guide is useful, either as mana ramp for turn 2 bloodmoon or chalice and also serve as beater in midgame where the extra mana is not that useful anymore. I felt that 1 or 2 batterskull mainboard can help the weaker creatures like magus of the moon, boros reckoner and ssg survive better. Spellskite, I have try it in sideboard, I have even thought of mainboarding it, but I realised that player have adapted themselves to this card and are playing cards to deal with it that its effectiveness become limited. it does not help improve the chance by a lot more but rather just act as a delay till they get a removal spell. torpor orb and chalice do a better job. this observation is from the past few tournaments that I play. many players have adapted themselves to bloodmoon in my meta, therefore turn 2 bloodmoon is very crucial.
Thank you for all of the input and ideas. What number of spirit guide would you advocate for? Do you have a suggested decklist? Are there any other suggestions anyone has on the deck? Edit: I saw your list but if anyone else has some it would be great!
The list above is the one i am currently using. So far result had been 2-1 of 3 round swiss. 3 ssg should be sufficient, too much ssg, may not help in drawing threats and solution.
Has anyone ever tried out a sword main? I feel like sword of light and shadow could be really sweet. They makes magus a 4 toughness, if they try want to remove a reckoner on equip activation path/abupt is really the only way without consequence. Stormbreath is already hard to remove at 4 toughness and pro white so he's a very good equip target. The creature recursion could be really sweet with a removed magus of the moon. Just throwing out the idea and I realize it could be horrible but I just feel like it could fit in a 1-of, but possibly not in this abrupt decay everywhere meta.
I dont know if abrupt would be the problem, as I feel b/g and jund are down in general. I just think as good as swords are most of the time you would have one you are doing well enough without it. Most lists dont have many creatures to carry the sword with only 10 or so creature, son of which are spirit guides and likely to never actually be a creature. I like the new suggestions so why not test it and see how it goes?

It doesn't matter. They will have cast at least 9 spells while comboing off.

In most cases, SSG is worth it, especially when you are playing a turn 2 Blood Moon or a turn 1 Chalice of the Void.
