Discussion about dramatically increasing the size of the banlist by more than 2-3 cards is not allowed. In the past, this sort of discussion has derailed the thread into completely unconstructive debate. There is a fine line between approved ban discussion (e.g. cards that are consistently breaking the turn 4 rule in top tier decks, or cards that make oppressive top tier decks) and spammy, prohibited discussion (e.g. banning Immolating Souleater and Fling because they theoretically break the turn 4 rule). If you see someone doing this, report them instead of responding to it. If you have a question about this, feel free to get in touch with staff to ask.
Do not discuss the "death of Modern" or generally claim that it is dying.
Do not discuss reprints of new cards or card design. We have other threads for bothtopics.
Defining archetypes (e.g. "What is control?" "Does Modern have true control?") is only okay if it directly relates to unbans and bans. For example, if your post doesn't reference a card like Ancestral Vision, it won't be okay.
Remember, this is a place to discuss, and have fun. Keep it civil and keep your posts constructive.

Here are some reasons that cards are banned in Modern:
Some cards enable a top tier deck to consistently win on turn 3 or earlier. Because this violates the "turn 4" rule of the format, the following cards have been banned:
Other cards have been banned because they make certain decks too consistent/reliable and thus stagnate the format. Here are some examples of these cards:
Some cards, currently only one, are banned because they were just mistakes. This card is one of the most broken cards of all time and has been banned in almost every format where it was or is legal:
Finally, there are some cards that were banned for logistical reasons. These cards made tournaments last too long and were banned to make events run smoother. They were not necessarily banned for power reasons.

Affinity is probably going to go back to being the unquestionable strongest deck in modern, so every matchup you're going to have to fight through artifact hate that was meant for affinity.

I would imagine that's next on the list.
With Ancestral Vision unbanned, I doubt Bloodbraid will come off any time soon. They mentioned it in the reasoning for ancestral coming off the ban list.

I agree.
I was indifferent to a BBE unban but after AV unban I'm pretty sure my comrades are going to request for her coming off the list until the cows come home.
Not losing mox opal and getting AV + Sword? This is about as good as I could have realistically hoped for.
Sadly didn't manage to pick up swords before they were all cleared out, hope they don't go too high. At least I got 4 AV for cheap last year. Time to get brewing
I'm gonna be the idiot here: what deck shell does SotM fit in? I have a casual deck I play with the Thopter Foundry combo and it's PRETTY good. But nothing to cream my pants over. Someone please break down for me what additional elements turn it into a holy **** kind of thing. Much obliged.
Probably see ancestral banned again after players abuse it or it just sees a legitimate 30-40% play in modern. Anytime we see draw 3 cards under 2-3 mana in modern is just absurd.
Sword of the meek was assured, but affinity can basically play the thoptor/sword combo against control. Which doesn't dilute the growing affinity problem post-meta.
Kataki war's wage will see larger amount of play to combat affinity, since they can still play around stony.
Eldrazi will now be a "fair" deck with 4 temples. Tron can't fetch free ulamogs now, so tron players go back to karn t3. It seems like a good format to play in again. Ill probably just splash 4 AV in any deck with nobles + blue. Card is insane not to play.
Pleasantly surprised at the unbans but cautiously "pessimistic" since not banning Eldrazi temple may just render AV and SoTM strategies moot. We'll see how it all shakes out.
If Eldrazi stays AND AV decks do well, I think jund probably plummets in tiers. I'm ok with that if it results in bbe being unbanned later.
Snagged 4 Swords. This is great news and a good refresher for the format. Hopefully some form of Esper control can emerge from this. All of the prices are going to explode obviously.
