Welcome to the Modern banlist discussion! Here, you can discuss everything related to the banlist, from questioning the possibility of unbans to recent announcements of new bannings.
Please follow a few simple rules while you are here.
All MTGS forum rules apply here. For example, if you see a user flaming, spamming, or trolling, please report him/her instead of responding to it.
It is okay to discuss Legacy only if it is related to Modern bans and unbans.
Discussion about dramatically increasing the size of the banlist by more than 2-3 cards is not allowed. In the past, this sort of discussion has derailed the thread into completely unconstructive debate. There is a fine line between approved ban discussion (e.g. cards that are consistently breaking the turn 4 rule in top tier decks, or cards that make oppressive top tier decks) and spammy, prohibited discussion (e.g. banning Immolating Souleater and Fling because they theoretically break the turn 4 rule). If you see someone doing this, report them instead of responding to it. If you have a question about this, feel free to get in touch with staff to ask.
Do not discuss the "death of Modern" or generally claim that it is dying.
Do not discuss reprints of new cards or card design. We have other threads for bothtopics.
(8/19/2015) Defining archetypes (e.g. "What is control?" "Does Modern have true control?") is only okay if it directly relates to unbans and bans. For example, if your post doesn't reference a card like Ancestral Vision, it won't be okay.
Remember, this is a place to discuss, and have fun. Keep it civil and keep your posts constructive.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some reasons that cards are banned in Modern:
Some cards enable a top tier deck to consistently win on turn 3 or earlier. Because this violates the "turn 4" rule of the format, the following cards have been banned:
Other cards have been banned because they make certain decks too consistent/reliable and thus stagnate the format. Here are some examples of these cards:
Some cards, currently only one, are banned because they were just mistakes. This card is one of the most broken cards of all time and has been banned in almost every format where it was or is legal:
Finally, there are some cards that were banned for logistical reasons. These cards made tournaments last too long and were banned to make events run smoother. They were not necessarily banned for power reasons.
No complaints from me. I am positive Wizards feels that their structure of Magic Origins will shake up Modern enough so that bans or unbans arent needed.

Good on Wizards. I had two copies of Azusa, Lost but Seeking in my cart ready to purchase in the event that Summer Bloom was banned. I (and my wallet!) can breathe a little easier now.

Honestly, it's what everyone expected. Modern season is eventually over, Modern Festival on MTGO is also over, and they used the data from those to determine nothing needs to be changed. While I personally wish they would ban Hive Mind or Nourishing Shoal, they either get hated out too easily or they just don't have a large enough meta share yet.
But still... #freeSwordoftheMeek

I'm really tempted to go through that last thread and quote a lot of people about how confident they were in a Bloom/Griselbrand/Vengeance/Twin/Snapcaster/etc. banning. But that's not very moderatorial. As it stands, I am extremely pleased about Wizards' decision and look forward to the format's continued growth. Now excuse me as I go hammer out a banlist article for the 11 AM Nexus deadline.

Being the mod saint that you are, I fully approve of a massive public shaming if it'd make you feel better. You deserve it.

2 cards that only see play in 2 decks that are gimicky, I don't see why they should get banned.
I actually have to say i would be okay with a Hivemind ban, but no bans is also fine. I feel like modern is a healthy format at the moment and it should stay that way.
unbanning anything right now would be a bit crazy. The format is still handling cruise ban results. Hopefully they unban AV and sword next round, add some more fun into the pool.
Cue hundreds of people defending it by saying "No change is one of the harder decisions for WOTC to make."
WOTC only cares about shaking up big tournaments, or fixing something if there is a large outcry after a big tournament. We're not having that right now so its the easy and lazy choice to make.

If you couldn't tell I hate greedy blue decks.
Missed opportunity to have the headlines be "grishoalbanned" haha. Not that I feel it needed one, but I am all for this headline if it happens next time.
Grishoalbrand here I come. Not playing anything else when this is in the format.
If more people react this way, which I assume will be the case, we'll get some real data on just how good that deck is.
Well the deck already has 2 big points in it's favor. One it destroys burn. Which is freewin glore. Two it's got redundancy with the arcane gimmick. Which shores up it's weakness to counters. I believe it's by far the best combo deck in the format. But as you said, we can only tell after some real data.

What I think of MaRo
I still think Summer Bloom would have been one of the better bans, but obviously WotC doesnt agree with me and thats ok.
Something this will help with, as with the other banlist announcements, is to help set precedent for similar situations that arise.
So overall, not my favourite announcement but a lesson learned.
