I agree completely! But there are people who do it. I don't understand it. There is a guy at my local LGS who LOVES foils and will over trade and trade very well for foils he wants. And lots of legacy players or modern players pimp their decks once they are done building it because the only other thing to do is make another new deck. Which is logical but some players like having 1 deck they know in and out. Its logical to have 1 deck you know how to pilot extremely well than have 3 decks that you cant pilot to save your life.

Also there was a guy at a modern tournament I went to, my first tournament I had a semi good deck with at that. And he had an entire modern Jund deck fully foiled aside from the unhinged lands which he needed 1 more foil Swamp and 1 foil mountain to finish. He told me the reason he likes the foils is that the demand will always be there for them so their price is likely to stay high even if a card is banned.

Foils maintain value better because they are more collectible.
Thus some players go out of their way to get them so that it is less likely that the value of their cards will tank. Look at foil Deathrite Shaman for instance, the price hardly dipped when it was banned.

I'd just say that people should stop pouring money into buying cards when they already have everything that they want for their decks. There are many more useful and fun things in the world to spend money on than making your deck shiny.

Sorry, I have that problem. It's tough to cure when you see the ridiculous spikes on the cards. I bought a playset of FOIL Abrupt Decay a few weeks ago for $144 and saw them shoot up to $300 in a week. You can't beat that feeling, even if your intention is never to sell.
There are always people who will search for hours online looking for undervalued FOILs (as well as non-FOILs).

I'm a collector and a player. I try so very hard not to care about foils because I can get so much else, but I always get that twinge.
For instance, near the end of INN/RTR standard I traded away my foil Breeding Pool for a regular Breeding Pool and a Liliana of the Veil. I also traded a foil Overgrown Tomb to get 4 normal shocks, including a normal Overgrown Tomb. Those two foil shocklands finished both my shock collection and my playset of Lilianas. It's really hard to argue with that kind of value.

I really don't understand why so many people like foil cards more. You don't get better at playing the game by having shiny cards. If I had the money for foils (which I don't), I would buy more staples that I don't own, try to enter Legacy and other formats, or just buy other things.
I use to suck at magic, but then I foiled out my deck and now I win every FNM. True story.
Edit: On a serious note, staples for every format are rising. If you guys don't play legacy, you would be shocked at the rise recently on staples, specifically lands of all types.

Just because we can't have the fetchlands cost as much as the ABUR duals right?

Well, they don't cost as much as duals, but I have no problem with that. I doubt they ever will. You'll notice that fetches and duals climbed at the same time. I would say it's safe to guess that if the fetches start to climb, the duals would climb in response and vice versa.

For a lot of working adults, MTG is a "small time" investment. Compare it to a hobby like cars and MTG is basically free. If you are the type of person who likes to show off the fact that the cost of magic cards is nothing meaningful, foils and promos are the way to do it.
I do this a bit, mainly for myself. I personally do not like foils, but I will usually pimp out my basic lands with Unhinged versions. I really like those pics, very clean and traditional. Overall though, I care more about the playing of the game than showing off.
That said, there is somewhat of a psychological advantage to playing a deck that is completely foiled.
It's the same reason people get classy paint jobs on their cars or use a nicer looking wood for their bookshelves. People like nice things. I don't understand what's not to get?

Mostly this. I'm not really into foils but I will pay more to get cards with art I like or an interesting foreign language. At the end of the day my race car costs far, far more to race for a season than I've ever put into Magic and I will never get a dime of that money back while my Magic collection consistently increases in value. It's not hard to justify the money if you've got it.
I really could care less about foils. Always have. Unless it has like a stained glass look to it. The lands I use to pimp out my decks are the Arena 1996 lands, mainly because they are rare and the island fits my Merfolk deck so well...

This discussion on foils I think alludes to an interesting fact. Throughout this and other threads people will argue that Magic is not a collector card game. I disagree with this and would like to enter into evidence the existence of foil and promo cards. For why would these things exist if not to be collected?

yes and no. They are sort of like Beta P9 in that there will almost always be someone who wants them but the trick is finding them. Around here they are strictly trade material since no shops will pay more for foils due to how slow they sell, so you have to find that one guy that will actually trade high for those foil Rakdos Charms or Restoration Angels. There is a guy at one of the shops I go to that is sometimes there who is a serious magpie and has trade binders full of shiny cardboard, and will trade favorably for them. I traded to get two regular Temple of Silence for the one foil I had, so that was nice, but that is a rarity. I once had a fatpack full of common/uncommon foils that I pulled over the years, and I just gave them away to my son's girlfriend so she could use them for an art project. I still have stacks of them and put them up on Puca trade in hopes that there is someone really looking for a foil Blackcleave Cliffs or whatever, but honestly they are not easy to trade most of the time 'round here.
I am not a fan of them in general because a lot of them look darker for some reason and I find them hard to read and not very attractive, but if it is all that I have I will use them.
