I play jund a lot of time and rock seems a little easier to play than jund because your mana is less complex, i played death shadow only during some short test session and it seems really hard to play and optimize all your choices so i think BGX if far easier to play than death shadow (death shadow is 9/10 and BGX 6/10 for me). For big mana or combo deck, it just depend of what do you like aha ! I am a fan of vizier postmortem combo and it's very easy to play.
I don't know, I'm leaning towards tron. (f*** tron I know). I mean it's resilient and easy to play. Don't know if it's a good choice or not. Is it any fun to play?
@Davidalb : "fun" is just what you think, some people like tron and others don't. We can't help you for that (my heart says "just don't pick tron even if you life matters, instead just die with honour" :D)
I have been playing the rock (switched from abzan) for a while now. I recently decided to play 4 leyline of the void in sideboard. The reason is having a good SB plan vs phoenix, kci and dredge (and maybe mardu, storm and hollow one). I've had a few games where I drew it late or hit leyline onto my dark confidant trigger which mostly results in a game loss(I know it happens but it feels so bad). My question is is it still viable now that KCI has been banned to play four leyline of the void ( it still hits atleast 5 decks hard) or should I try and go for a more interactive way and maybe use those slots for other SB options ?
My sideboard now is:
4x leyline of the void
2x surgical extraction
1x nissa vital force
1x engeneered explosives
1x damnation
1x languish
3x fulminator mage
1x collective brutality
1x kalithas
I played leyline in jund some months, it was very good if you are really sure about the metagame, now i think have a split between spellbomb/cage/extraction is the safest choice if you are not sure about the metagame. I would cut the leyline for 3 spellbomb or 2 spellbomb/1 cage and add any cheap interaction (duress, deathmark, disfigure by example).
Well,
i just want to write a short sum-up about my Rock testing. I try to do ~~100 games and after i see if i go back to Jund or another deck.
My decklist
I am currently 18-7 on MTGO Comp Leagues and lazy reports of my last paper event :
Side Event GP :
Jund 2-1
Jund 1-2
Abzan 0-2
Rock 2-1
Rock 2-1
UR Phoenix 2-0
Esper Delver 1-2
Humans 0-2
Spirits 2-0
Amulet Titan 2-0
8-Whack 2-1
Local 90 players tournament :
Death Shadow (my teammate, loose g1 on missland) 1-2
Dredge 2-0
Jund 1-2
Burn 2-0
Burn 2-1
Merfolk 0-2
Burn 2-0
I explained it in one of my previous post, i test a draw-first SB plan against BGX mirror by keeping all discards, up to now it seems ok for me but not impressive.
We will test with my teamate the draw-first in the Grixis shadow match-up, for me it's a play first but i respect the idea.
Some of my choices which can be interesting :
-urborg, it impressed me a lot, sometimes i don't want to fetch early to keep my lifepoint maybe or keep the fetch for tracker or to up 1% of draw a land next turn or just help to cast lilianas sometimes, this land was very great for me. I very shortly test twilight mire and i cut it after 1 league.
-disfigure in SB, it was ok up to now, i was happy to have more cheap interactions against burn, humans or spirits. Sometimes against hollow one it's nice to block a gurmag and just play a combat trick, not insane but an ok sideboard card. If deathmark was an instant, i probably not try disfigure.
-hissing quagmire was not so bad, i have to play it to keep a high manland count and have 17 black sources (need 18 in a normal world :/), sometimes this land was cool, yes i talk to you zombie fish.
-i am not disappointed of assassin's trophy but i should try a split with decay just to have a feedback.
-no nissa, vital force. well two reasons for me : actually i test my sb plan against mirror and a 5 cmc sorcery against control ? Meh, not for me.
-[troll]keep thoughtseize against burn post SB, i am 15-7 with jund and 4-1 with rock[/troll]
One question :
i think my SB plan against merfolk should be :
-4 tarmogoyf, -3 LotV
+1 disfigure +1 tracker +1 EE +1 maelstrom pulse
+1 kitchen finks +1 damnation +1 languish
Merfolk trickster + islandwalker + harbinger of the tides or to many ways to manage goyf i think. (and sometimes SB relic of progenitus)
I will probably make an other sum-up after more leagues.
Thanks for reading and any answers.
Thanks for sharing your results and thoughts. I do like your feedback about Urborg, I think I might try it in my list !
What do you guys think about Spawn of Mayhem ? Can we run 1 or maybe 2 or is it exclusively reserved to lists that can deal direct damage (Jund with Lightning Bolt for example) ?
Any thoughts or comments on Shadow of Doubt? I've seen it in older lists but no mention here at all.
In a fetch-heavy meta it seems like it could pull weight. It also shuts off Gifts Ungiven, Chord of Calling and Scapeshift.

It's probably a better card in control decks - decks that hold up mana normally. It could still pull some weight here in the mid-to-late game.
I remember sometimes having one copy in my Grixis Delver sideboard. I don't remember ever using it.
@RochiTomRochi : it's clearly a very special metagame-call :
Storm is a favorable maatch-up
In general fulminator mage is a better card against ramp deck and collective brutality is powerful against scapeshift
Chord of calling.deck can be managed very efficiencly by grafdigger's cage but that kind of match-up is pretty favorable too because graveyard hate, wrath, removal, discard are usefull.
I think Spawn of Mayhem is a bad idea, it's just a slower goyf with fly and it deals damage to us too, i don't see when it's a good card.
Moreover, anyone have any side board tech against Artifact Prison deck ? In general i always loose 1-2. Now i start to want replace EE by gaze of granit :(. creeping corrosion is bad because it allows regeneration, maybe any stupid anti-artifacts card exist somewhere.

I’ve got a pretty different take on the Merfolk matchup. While this is probably the only deck against which we’d even consider trimming Goyfs, I definitely don’t think you cut the playset, especially because Relics aren’t terribly common in their 75s anymore. Trickster is a beating, but even that is sometimes only a 3-of now.
I also think you can leverage LoTV well enough to keep 2 in, and that trimming some number of discard spells is correct, because 1) they’re almost a midrange deck insofar as the importance of our topdecks and having answers to their board is concerned, and 2) Golgari doesn’t get wrecked by Spreading Seas anywhere near as hard as Jund and Abzan do.
With your list, I’d make these changes:
-2 Thoughtseize
-1 Tarmogoyf
-1 LoTV
+1 Damnation
+1 Languish
+1 Pulse
+1 Disfigure
The Finks is potentially fine as well, so if you want that I’d cut an IoK (play) or Bob (draw).

@Grim_Flayer : well thanks for answer but don't board in Engineered Explosives against a deck with a bunch of 2-drop and master of waves token is strange.
When my opponent have trickster AND harbinger of tides and graveyard hate ( i am quite surprised if merfolk players go play a tournament with 0 sb card against graveyard ) tarmogoyf power slow down a lot because attack is bad, block is harder so your goyf can make good attack and block only when you have manage the rest of your opponent deck, i don't see in which world BGX can race merfolk. I don't agree with your vision of "midrange merfolk", in top deck war BGX win very easily, you just need to reach that moment.

Whoops, I missed EE from your list. You absolutely want that, no question!
Merfolk don’t go entirely without grave hate, but Surgical Extraction has supplanted Relic to a notable degree, with Mistcaller also adding a few percentage points in some of those matchups. You’re just about as likely to see 3-4 Surgical and 0 Relic as you are 3-4 Relic and 0 Surgical these days, with a few decks playing 1-2 of each, and cards like Tormod’s Crypt and Grafdigger’s Cage making occasional appearances. Relic is the only card we care about from that group, so for the purposes of evaluating Goyf vs Merfolk, he’s on average a lot safer than he used to be.
Harbinger is good against Goyf, but it’s even better against the rest of our threats: it can reset the counters on Scooze, Tracker, and Kalitas; it delays Bob’s trigger, which has the potential to become a liability the longer it’s delayed; and Goyf is as cheap or cheaper than any of our other threats in terms of how much tempo we lose by having to re-cast them. I also don’t believe we want to reduce our threat count overall in this matchup, especially with Harbinger in mind.
Golgari can race Merfolk by interacting T1, sticking a T2 threat, and then going back to interacting. Even if they bounce or otherwise deal with that T2 threat, chunking their life total early on a couple times is very relevant—this stops them from being able to turn their board sideways for two big Islandwalking swings, for fear of dying on the crack back after the first one.
If you happen to have both Languish and Damnation then I'd cut the second TS for it. I personally don't think LoTV is bad in that matchup, I think she is actually quite nice. I could maybe see cutting one copy on the draw, but with 3 copies in the main at first place, I think I still want on average one LoTV per game and with 3 copies you accomplish that on average.
Hi guys! I'm looking to take Rock to GP LA next month and I have my maindeck ready to go(only may trim FoR to 3 but love my land destruction and hasn't really hurt my manabase in testing. I wanted some feedback for the sideboard. Here is my maindeck:
I'm pretty set on these 12 cards for my sideboard:
3x Fulminator
2x Surgical
2x Cage
1x Nissa
1x Damnation
1x Brutality
1x Finks
1x Damping sphere.
For the other 3 slots I'm considering either a 3rd surgical, 1x spellbomb, 1x Golgari Charm, 1x EE, 3rd Tracker, and 1x Deathmark.
Let me which of those you guys think would best fit the final slots. Also, Any other card suggestions for the sideboard definately welcome. Even the mainboard. Want this 75 polished and ready to Rock! thanks guys!
@Grim_Flayer : ok that's fair if you think BG can race merfolk, i don't agree on that because harbinger/trickster/spreading seas/master of waves/relic. And bob, ooze, tracker, kalitas don't need to attack to win, you can just wait a discard one day before attack.
@FlyingDelver : i agree LotV is not totally bad but kill a 1-drop merfolk, a silvetgill adept, mutavault or just be countered by a spell pierce is not very impressive.
Went 2-2 with the deck at FNM, my first real time playing it.
Fairly standard list, but I only have 1 LoTV due to budget at the moment, and had 3 Hissing Quagmire as I didn't have a 2nd Treetop Village.
As suggested above, I cut 3x Shadow of Doubt for 1xDuress, 2xDamping Sphere.
0-2 Esper Control
Game 2 I should have saved Fulminator Mage to do some damage and save it for a later Celestial Colonnade, but I tried to cut him off triple blue early for Cryptic Command. We end up racing with Manlands, but 4/4 will always beat 2/2...
2-0 UR Storm
Fairly easy matchup. Game 1 was fun - he used Grapeshot to clear my board then Empty the Warrens to make 10 goblins.
I drop Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet into Tarmogoyf and manage to stablise with the lifelink. Meanwhile I'm chipping away at his goblins keeping a healthy life total, then swing for lethal with about 5 creatures/manlands. Game 2 he mulled to 4 or 5 and I had hand disruption...
1-2 Bogles
New player, but Bogles is a silly deck that can just win if you don't have the answers.
I took out the Daybreak Coronet before it got out of hand, but then he attached Spirit Mantle and I couldn't block with my bigger Goyf.
Do I take out Dark Confidant in this matchup? It felt bad losing chunks of life to what can be a really fast unblockable clock...
2-1 Vannifar "Pod"
Very grindy, lost G1 to the combo, but G2 eventually I out-value him with LLH and LoTV, then G3 we both end up top-decking and my threats are better on board. He uses Deputy of Detention on my Goyf, I cast Languish then drop a 2nd Goyf. GG.
Overall I love the interactive nature of the deck, it gives you some real choices, and I've missed playing Inquisition of Kozilek!!
Games do go long, but you feel like eventually you turn the corner and win through card advantage and better answers to what your opponent is doing.
For this week, I've got a 2/2 split of Quagmire and Village, and I've gone to a 3/3 split of Dark Confidant and Tireless Tracker as Tracker feels like a better threat and better topdeck late game.
Planning to take this to MFLA/GPLA so I haven't changed it yet, but after the last 4 FNM's I feel like it's time to tweak things a bit. Notably, my LGS is having a big Modern tournament the week before LA as a tune-up. I have played D&T, Jund, Burn, and UW in the past, but may have found a new favorite in The Rock because it's a deck where I get to play a catch-all removal spell like Trophy (in addition to some favorites in Bob and TS) and feel more comfortable with this over Jund because I also get 7 maindeck ways to deal with problematic lands. Any suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated.
I feel like I want to cut to 24 land (maybe for 4th Bob or 4th Scooze) but at the same time want a 4th FOR although there are some awkward opening hands, and I don't really want to play Twilight Mire. Playing 4 manlands + 3 FOR seems to be fine so I likely won't change it. Regarding Bob #4, maybe cut a Brutality for it, but I am worried I have just been missing the Burn matchup and feel like it's growing in popularity with Skewer. Also, based on local meta, I may go to a 3/3 IoK/TS split as I have actually whiffed on T1 IoK a couple times and there seem to be multiple Tron/Scapeshift players (there were 2-3 KCI players weekly before the ban). The one definite change I will make for this week is to move 1 Kalitas to the board and main 1 Pulse. Oh, and I HATE TRON (and I am so glad they banned KCI, but wish it was Stirrings that was banned instead).
1/4 (2-2, 5-5)
Titanshift 0-2
Storm 2-0
Mono U Living End 1-2 (Misplayed game 3 and should have won)
Turbo Grisel 2-1
1/18 (2-2, 4-5)
KCI 0-2
4C Midrange 2-0
Breach 2-1
Izzet Phoenix 0-2 (seemed like a decent matchup, but he had nutty draws w/2x Phoenix T2 both games)
2/1 (1-2, 4-5 drop)
Bant Spirits 2-1
Tron 1-2 (Won game 1 - he mulled to 4 but only needed to topdeck land T5 to O-Stone but whiffed
Lost game 2 - T3 Fulminator > Surgical but lost drawing lots of lands, even through LotV ult, I drew no threats and eventually he got to Ugin
Lost game 3 - He had T1 Relic so I couldn't T2 Trophy > Surgical, long game, kept him off Tron for a long while but had to fight through 2 O-Stones and eventually Ugin won the game)
Bant Midrange 1-2 (was a homebrew, but I was tilted from Tron matchup so I was super sloppy and didn't even want to play round 4)
@MeetJSquared : well i hate tron too but the match-up seems really 50/50 with rock, maybe you can play that last field of ruin ! (i have that and no damping sphere and i think it's fine for that match-up)
Your match-ups here are very very hard by the way, keep that in mind. Only storm and phoenix are very good match-ups.
My only big advice is work on your tilting, when you have 0 easy victory it's very important to stay focus at each second, others decks like timmy-tron can just reveal their hand to win sometimes, BGX never :(.
I agree 2 kalitas is probably too much (i just cut my second one yesterday or 3rd tracker MD) kalitas is the best random card but the worst card to have in opening hand in g1.
@pzbw7Z : i did the samething in some version of BGX before trophy, now i am ok to have 4 trophy only to interact on lands OTD, field of ruin is so much better the rest of time.

1/25 (2-2, 6-4)
Tron 1-2
Breach 2-0
BW Tokens 2-0
Jund 1-2
2/1 (1-2, 4-5 drop)
Bant Spirits 2-1
Tron 1-2
(Won game 1 - he mulled to 4 but only needed to topdeck land T5 to O-Stone but whiffed
