Hi all, how AM I supposed to side against kikki chord ? I play with thé white splash
As a former kiki chord player, a few cards in the shadow list really stand out.
Mainboard:
1. Liliana, the Last Hope - amazing against all the mana dorks and small critters they run.
2. Discard - great for taking apart the ramp and combo pieces.
Sideboard:
1. Anger of the Gods - Backbreaking against an established board
2. Nihil Spellbomb - Stop Eternal Witness shenanigans. Prevents them from buying back Chord of Calling or anything else.
3. Fulminator Mage - Kiki mana bases tend to be greedy, especially when they splash a 4th color for black or blue. Punish them.
GB/x shadow lists lost a larger hold, while UB/x has risen in play.
What do you guys think this means for the deck? To me, it looks like the meta is just adjusting to the presence of the GB/x shadow decks.
I think, if you would shave TBR, you could go to straight Abzan as well at this point. I personally don't like this yet. Maybe in the long run this is viable though.
So what's the current thinking on the white splash? I know in Gerry T's article in March he said it wasn't necessary, and on the GAM podcast he and Majors were saying that Lingering Souls seemed way overrated in the mirror and that Ranger of Eos was just too damn slow. However, all the lists still seem to be running the splash.
I just finished the manabase for DSJ and was thinking of running either it or Junk Mid at Modern night tonight... a tough choice!

Honestly, I think Gerry T and Majors were flat out wrong. They were saying that in a meta that was slanted towards more ramp/combo, the meta has very much adjusted into a slower paced one with more interaction, which means more surgicals, pushes and other removals for Death's Shadow. You also have to keep in mind those articles were written after just two tournaments with DSJ. I honestly think for decks like Grixis Control and Abzan that it feels incredibly difficult to win without lingering souls/ranger. The meta isn't a goldfish one anymore, it's way too interactive to rely on just your 8x threats
TBR and K-Command are so worth the red splash, I have won so many games with TBR that I had no business winning, it's very much a small, tiny backup combo win
The white splash is too good vs the grindy matches. If the meta really did slant to combo and ramp, then I could see the jund build being better, but there are so many matches I dropped post board because I didn't have the white cards. They give you more threats to weaken 1 for 1 spot removal.
Lingering Souls is one of the best cards ever printed against grindy decks in my opinion. I don't know how Gery and Majors beat heavy removal decks with out that cards and Ranger of Eos.
I definitely agree. There's a lot of footage of SCG Dallas where Lingering Souls was the only reason Shadow decks were able to win game 2 or 3.
Practical question guys: Generally, would you keep one land hands with a cantrip? (Lets say on the play). I am looking at hands like this: 2 IOK, Verdant, LtLH, Decay, DS, Mishras Bauble. Is this a keep against an unknown opponent on the play?
I usually am leaning more towards keeping hands like these, but specifically in the recent past I got punished too often for this. It just meant that I got stuck on 1 land. But I am not sure if this is a straight mulligan, so thats why I am asking. How do you handle these hands?
Can someone explain why Ghor-Clan has dropped off? I'm personally a big fan of tutorable pump spells and a backup beater. It's so flexible, which is what this deck values. It gets even better with Souls tokens IMO. So, what gives?

Ghor Clan is a very weak card on its own, and doesn't really help stealing games like TBR does. Metas do shift towards dealing with DSJ which means its more a grind now than before. For this reason such a card won't be that great, as it doesn't have that big of an impact and you don't want to get 2-for-1 by running this card. This can surely happen with TBR as well, but it can just steal games when you are up against an combo/big mana deck or when you are behind. Ghor can't really provide this that often. Its just a 2 mana deal 4 damage most of the time.
You would anyway side Ghor Clan out in matchups where you want Lingering Souls most of the time, because you mostly want Souls for grindy matchups, where TBR and Chor Clan all together are very bad.
It's one of those, high risk, high reward hands. The fact you have bauble almost makes it harder to decide. What if you bauble and see a land on top. Then you want to wait a turn to IoK to set up your hand. It's nice if you don't see a land, because then you can fetch and IoK without regret. I'd probably mull, especially on the play. On the draw, I might keep it.
This 5-0 MTGO list ran main deck Ranger of Eos. I'm trying to think of the meta where this would be best to run main deck... Probably really grindy metas with lots of Abzan and Jund?
I mean, as a 1 of, I don't think it hurts that much mb. The thing I like is the 2 windswept. It hits the shrine, tomb and grounds as well as the basic forest. I like that more than marsh flats or foothills honestly and might try it. I might swap my fun of Varolz to the ranger too.
He's also running 2 terminate mb which is good vs bg threats. I've been considering finding room for 1 mb lately as that's another issue with the deck is answering bombs outside of decay or push range efficiently. The list is a bit odd, but looks to have some legs for its reason.

I need practice on both of them, and have no idea what the local meta is looking like!
