Tested metamorph briefly. My apologies - I agree it might be better than phantasmal. Some observations
- With 7 mana, you can easily cast drowner into metamorph (more easily than drowner into phantasmal image because of additional U cost). This play is backbreaking
- With a large a mount of mana, resolving a metamorph into any board with a displacer or vice versa = double displacer = pseudo hexproof for all your creatures
- Metamorph dying to kolaghan's comes up pretty often in the relevant matchups
Metamorph is a card I would mostly want in the mirror. Otherwise, it's still just filling the cmc hole that reshaper would otherwise.
Another idea for a curve-filler: Walking ballista. Sure, we can't utilize it as well as eldrazi-tron can, but it can pretty much always be played on curve. It's a decent topdeck since it can go to face, and it's a late game mana sink. Doesn't have many synergies beyond ancient stirrings. I'll do a little bit of testing.
Edit: Did 15 games with it against burn, jund, and grixis delver. I think it's another reasonable addition to our maybeboard. In all the games the most it ever got cast was x=1 or x=2, and was only pumped once or twice. However, it still does a lot of work as a (albeit *****ty) removal spell against 1 toughness creatures. This is pretty relevant against grixis delver, taking out pyromancers and delvers, somewhat relevant against jund (hitting lily and dark confidant), and mostly irrelvant against burn. Notably, it does facilitate a turn 4 kill (T2 TKS - T3 Smasher - T4 ballista on 2). Unfortunately I don't really have the means to test this, but I think it would be really great against coco decks (e.g. elves) as a repeatable removal spell.
As Janusfcb said re. Eldrazi Tron - however like any deck we will still lose to their broken draws. However, on average Bant will beat Eldrazi Tron.
There was a discussion on bombs recently for grindy matchups - im not sure if we will ever get to a consensus - but yeah Nissa, Vital Force is def viable. I personally would prefer Vital Force over Sun's Champion if I had to choose one or the other due to the fact that it's far more likely that Vital Force will be cast while still relevant.
My concern with cards like Phantasmal Image and Metamorph is that they dont do anything on an empty board (and are also fragile to removal, anything will kill PI and Metamorph gives K Command a juicy target) - and thus I see them as generally as "win more" cards.
So, finally went undefeated at my local LGS! Took a while but last night I felt like I finally got the hang of the deck. The SB'ing worked out and the deck drew really well, I mean I had T2 Thought-Knots into Smashers for the majority of my matches and didn't have to mull One hopes that this stroke of luck continues until next week, I need this bit of luck at GP San Antonio, for me and my team.
Cards I never bring in but can see why they're there:
Elspeth, Sun's Champion, yeah, I guess this is for the mirror and fair match ups? A lot of players are on Deathshadow in my are and I rarely have a hand and in that match up Displacer + Drowner are how I navigate most of my wins.
Worship I guess this is like a complete blow out VS some decks and yes I've taken some games with this but, yeah I think it's a necessary evil. The salt is real when this lands lol.
Stubborn Denial, sometimes I wish I had access to more counters VS combo, I can see myself cutting Elspeth and:
Blessed Alliance, this card is both okay and useless at times. I am running 3x in my deck but I'd like to trim 1x and Elsepth for some more countermagic. I know I commented on Brain DeMars article on this very issue, and it's...ugh it's meh. It's good but sometimes I would rather just have the 3x Explosives in my main. I can see 2x in the 75 being fine.
Also, Relic vs Rest in Peace? I landed RIP against Abzan last night it was Lights out, Relic is more flexible, and can be found off stirrings but RIP is one of the reasons we run bant right? Hmm...

Hey guys, we have a series on our website called Sylvan Stories where we write fictional posts inspired by various popular decks around Legacy, Modern, and Standard. Our latest edition is about Eldrazi Aggro in Legacy and Modern and I wanted to share it with you all. It's not specifically about Bant Eldrazi, but just the strategy of Eldrazi in general. Hope you guys enjoy it!
It has some potential but not getting color screwed seems very challenging. Ancient Stirrings also gets worse with the addition of so many colored spells (maybe Oath of Nissa becomes better for this list ?)
It drops the U for a more midrange-oriented creature set, and also a bunch of tutorable silver bullets...
Haven't tried it yet, but the list looks good!
Why on earth would that build have a Torpor Orb in the side? Can't remember the last time I saw Orb on a list of 75, and of all the decks to play it in, that one seems like a bad fit.
Agreed that mana screw looks likely, and I think I'd want a playset of Matter Reshapers in a build that's looking to Evolve into bigger things like Angels, Gearhulks, and Smashers.
I would say so with the current meta. I actually run 1 EE and 1 Ratchet Bomb main. I think bomb has been really useful vs moons and if I get stuck on 1 or 2 colors and I really need to get 3 or even 4 cmc cards. It is gonna be slower for obvious reasons and majority of the time EE is better.
hey, so i posted a 5-0 with the evolution list that y'all linked to...
i have also played bant a lot.
the scg video that ari lax did was with an older take on the deck, the newer lists posting results drop much of the color package. no voice, 0-1 finks. just eldrazi package with tutor-ability/ consistency.
ive tested a little with keeping a blush splash for a couple drowners, but it loses some of the perks of the deck. having more basics, more ghost quarters is nice. with the blue splash it felt like bad bant eldrazi (since there arent many good blue cards to tutor for , just drowner, and mulldriter)
still working.tweaking... currently testing an abzan eldrazi evolution list with the black splash for : orzhov pontiffsiege rhinoshriekmawsin collector and fatal push ... but it loses the land hate/extra basics as well. it at least brings more tutor options to the table and more hard removal for creatures (push)
bunch of question marks... gearhulk as a tutorable wrath/restore balance is interesting. deadeye harpooner as a white shriekmaw... finks, or strangleroot geist in the spellskite spot is what i had been using but having a skite out with toolbox creature seems good to me... maybe 1 dismember in the 75...idk.
other sb ideas= choke, warping wail. tested relic and rest in peace, but relic can be found with stirrings, and doesnt hurt our synergy so thats valuable.
Khokden, on mtgo has been playing the deck longer than myself, but not sure if he uses this forum.
Blood Moon is a threat. If your entire meta is 8moons.dec that just tries to jam one out game 1 turn 2 with Harambe you should probably play something other than Bant Eldrazi. Sun & Moon is similar. If you suspect the occasional moon (for example, if your opponent is on Grixis/Jund and fetches basics turn 1) you can preemptively set up an EE@3 and comfortably sit on it without fear of the crimson planetary satellite. The overwhelming majority of kids on burn do not play moons. Affinity has been known to run 2 moons in game 2/3 but never game 1, which is tricky because you want to use the EE at a value other than 3 for this matchup. Death's Shadow, Abzan, Lantern, Breach/Scapeshift, and Tron never play it.
Hi guys,
Quick question,is the third engineered explosives really a necessity ?
Thx
Half of all Bant Eldrazi players play 2, half play 3. What's the difference? The ability to afford a third copy without taking out a second mortgage. Actually, it's the anticipated meta. The card is at its best against affinity and fish and rather underwhelming against Tron/the mirror and Breach/Titanshift.
These days, some wizards are finding they have a little too much deck left at the end of their $$$.

Did you remove voice and finks only to reduce the likeliness of mana-screw or for power level reasons?
i never played voice. the GW on turn 2 doesnt happen often enough really, its awkward. Finks im testing without, but its a 5th value sac for evolution... probably worth it for consistency, also, its a good value sac to fetch from a hierarch... but we probably want to grab a displacer, or a silver bullet generally. same with using a birds of paradise in the list, the 5th 1 drop helps consistency for the 2/3 mana toolbox( i.e. turn 2 kataki, or eidolon, gaddock teeg.)
Doesn't look too consistent to me... only 11 ways to cast Stirrings or Hierarch in T1 (technically 13 ways for Hierarch, if you count the Caverns) means you'll mull otherwise good opening hands with dig or ramp sometimes, just because you won't have the right mana source to cast em. You'd really want a lot more sources of G if you want to cast Witness or Finks or Evolution on-curve reliably, as well. It's the eternal curse of the Eldrazi decks--hard to get both enough colorless lands and enough sources for GG spells. I think you have to ditch a Cavern and maybe a Ghost Quarter for a couple more duals, maybe Razorverge Thicket and another Temple Gardens.
Bastion would help with the GG spells, and also gives you a colorless source, but I think you want another Temple Garden and a Razorverge Thicket, or two Temples, there. You really want T1 green, and playing these over the Bastions only hurts you for your GG spells when your other colored source is your single Plains. That won't happen as often as missing T1 Stirrings or Hierarch due to having Bastion in hand would happen.
Maybe you switch just one Bastion out. I dunno, try it and see how it plays. Might wanna mark the sleeve on cards you're considering for replacement and see how often you wish the card was different. Post up with your results--I'm interested in the Evolution build too.
yeah, my manabase for the deck has changed slightly. bastion isnt making my cut at all currently. just did another 5-0 so hopefully the list will be posted in a day or two. but the manabase is :
4 elrazi temple
4 brushland
3 cavern of souls
2 ghost quarter
1 tectonic edge
3 windswept heath
2 forest
1 plains
1 wastes
1 temple garden
i dont think we want lands that ever come into play tapped. aka no razorvirge thicket (sp?)
also, cant decide if evo. is different enough to warrant its own primer/page/ stop posting on this forum? ... it plays as bant 3/4 of the time.
Hey all, went to GP San Antonio today and ran Bant Eldrazi, while we had a make shift team (last minute formation) we were alive for the 6-3 win in and in, but we didn't get there. It was my first GP, so the 5-4 finish is bitter but sweet at the same time. With only about 6 weeks on Bant Eldrazi I've come to really love this deck. I'll get more detailed tomorrow but here are the results:
Vs Lantern Control 2-0 Win
Vs G/B Tron 2-1 Win
Vs Dredge 0-1(Jacob Wilson, CFB Red) 0-1 (We didn't finish the 2nd match, team lost before G2 was up but it was going to get good)
Vs Bant Eldrazi Mirror 1-2 Loss (Hard loss since I picked up the G1 win but I didn't draw enough gas and was simply to slow G3 to catch up after my Mull to 6)
Vs R/G Valakut 1-2 Loss (Yeah this is a rough match up)
Vs Eldrazi Tron 2-0 Win
Vs Abzan Deathshadow 2-0 Win
Vs Dredge 2-0 Win
Vs Ad Nauseum 1-2 Loss (SO CLOSE!!!!!! G2 Beat Phyrexian Unlife, G3, I may have misplayed here but I'll go into more detail tomorrow).
So in actuality I was 5 Wins- 3 Losses 1 match was decided by the team rule.
I can honestly say I recall moments where I could've done things better but, I had a blast. I have detailed notes, and will post my decklist later. The Merfolk player on our team as ... really good he went 7-2 on the day. Our 3rd was well...it was also her first time but she was a little more inexperienced (but hey, it was a last minute team made Friday).
Please remember some of these are meta choices for unified Modern, specifically targeted towards my seating and what my team thought would be in Seat B (which turned out to be a rather hard spot for me to be in. This was magic on hard mode all day).
Meta Choice: Sea Gate Wreckage over Ghost Quarter, reasoning: I expected fair decks to be in the middle, and wanted the draw option from wreckage in case of mana flood. I didn't activate this 1x throughout the 9 rounds. I some cases, VS Valakut I would've been in better shape had I had GQ and perhaps changed the outcome in G2 where where my opponent top decks Titan to pick off my dudes.
Meta Choice: Blessed Alliance,I expected Deathshadow and in testing this card did put in a little work. I figured the versatility of the card would be a good choice. Throughout 9 rounds I played this card 1x, and the other times it was in my hand I never needed it to win. I should've played the the 3rd EE in the main or Eternal Witness. I am thinking of cutting this card altogether, it's been very mediocre and I have beaten Deathshadow just fine without this card. If you are losing to DS it's not because you don't have this card, it's because you didn't stick a displacer + Drowner. All my wins have come from those + EE on 1 or 2.
Meta Choice for SB: Nature's Claim. My team and inner circle testing team from Austin came to a conclusion that I simply didn't want to lose to worship in the mirror (spoiler I lost to Elspeth) and wanted to have answers to Eldrazi Tron's Batterskull's (Spoiler, this happened and I blew my opponent out when he got greedy and landed 2x after having tron on line, thus tapping out). I never minded having Nature's C, and overall the +4 life was never an issue. I like this card as a catch all to problematic Artifacts and Enchantments, but it was a meta/ unified modern choice. I still think Natural State is the better card for us.
Cards I wish I didn't have: Stubborn Denial, I gave up Negate for my merfolk teammate and it mattered. I don't like stubborn anymore, I was never able to play at a point where it mattered. In more matches than I can remember, I boarded this in, and found out quickly that it's uses for effectiveness are small when you don't have a T3-4 4/4 on the board.
The 2nd Worship is unnecessary, It should've been Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I think Both these cards are mirror breakers and would've wanted the 1/1 Split.
MVP'S: Disdainful Stroke, it was stellar every match I boarded it in. Vs Tron I won due to me countering a late Karn (Gave me the match win), VS Eldrazi Tron I kept a hand of Path, x3 Lands, and 2x Stroke, Displacer, and on my first draw I got Stony Silence in hand for a T2 stony. I countered TKS and Endbringer in G2, both on curve after him hitting natural tron. Stony Silence wrecked him on T2.
What is the Zooicide match up supposed to be like? I'm not having much luck with either the Traverse teh world / Tarmo version or the Grixis - Delve version. I'm not sure if it is unfavorable in general or if I'm just playing it wrong.
Has anyone tried a singleton Tamiyo, Field Researcher as one of the bomb flex spots in the SB? I tried elspeth, but outside of the mirror, 6 mana seems like too much in the grindy matchups. I'm relatively new to the deck/modern, but it seems like it could be sweet.
