Quote from hqqlI have a couple of ideas for a bit of a different take on Modern LD and would like to put them out there to share them and get some feedback.
So, my first idea is turning lands into creatures, since those are a lot easier to deal with than plain ol' lands. I have 2 strategies on how to go about this.
Using either Genju of the Fens or Genju of the Falls are imo the easiest way to go. Fens can be used with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Falls can be used with Tideshaper Mystic, Aquitect's Will and Trait Doctoring, to name a few. The pros of this tactic are that it can be included in mono-colored decks, not even necesarily decks completely built around LD, it doesn't have to cost you any lands of your own, the Genjus can be used to your advantage on your own lands as well and they return to your hand after you got rid of the land, meaning that this tactic can easily lead to card advantage and works like an engine once the pieces are out. The cons are that this is a 3 card combo most of the time (genju, card to change the landtype and some form of removal) so assembling the pieces may prove a bit challenging, it's not very cheap without any other kind of acceleration (3 mana per genju + removal), you can't get rid of more lands at the same time than you have Genjus in play, there's only 4 of each color and using any other kind of removal than destruction/killing will make your Genju go to the graveyard instead of your hand.
2. Going Green
With Natural Affinity you can turn all lands into 2/2 creatures untill end of turn, easy-peasy, Life and Limb is a bit more challenging since it only works on forests, but the upside is that they get turned into 1/1 creatures (turning Electrickery into the most badass Stone Rain ever) and that this is an enchantment card, and with Lifespark Spellbomb you can target one specific land to turn it into a 3/3 creature, making it still a decent target for Bolt, PTE, Dreadbore and so on, perhaps a decent early game option. The pros/cons are pretty obvious, you can have 12 cards instead of 4 that help you here, but they all have their own drawback.
Each strategy can also be combined with:
- exchanging lands (Vedalken Plotter or Shifting Borders), which ensures your opponent has a land of the type you want him/her to have, can be used as a means of color denial for stalling, can be used to give your opponent an already activated manland that's just waiting to be destroyed (or better yet, unsummoned) and has just about a perfect interaction with Venser, the Sojourner and Clutch of the Undercity;
- continuous Land Destruction for only 1 mana with Porphyry Nodes;
- straightout superstripmining with Path to Exile and Leonin Arbiter;
- and any destroy all creatures effect combined with Ghostway.
Some other cards of note are Ajani Vengeant , Far//Away, Turn//Burn , Catch//Release, Izzet Staticaster, Pillar of Flame, Mizzium Mortars and Pyromancer's Swath (to be used with Electrickery for example).
My second idea is simpler and probably more consistent and easier to combine with 'classic' Land Destruction: Ramp Up & Slow Down.
Utilizing Life from the Loam, Summer Bloom, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Knight of the Reliquary and Harrow you can ramp up, thin your deck and fetch Ghost Quarters to get your SummerLoam engine going, which allows you to at least drop and use 2 (if you're using only Azusa) Ghost Quarters each turn. Throw a Leonin Arbiter in the mix once you're set up and you've locked out your opponent completely. If you need extra stalling I'd recommend Blind Obedience, Moonhold, Shadow of Doubt and Squelch if your opponent uses fetches, Hidden Strings (which can also be used to untap Knight), Exhaustion, Mangara of Corondor + Momentary Blink, Surgical Extraction and if you're running black Extirpate to rid your opponent of his/her nonbasics (which can be done as early as turn1 with a Ghost Quarter) and any symmetrical effect like Crack the Earth or Akki Blizzard-Herder once you're ahead.
So, ok, wow, this become way longer a post than I expected. I hope there's at least something in there worth considering, and in case you want a complete overview of all cards mentioned (and 2 or 3 more), Linkage.
