So i need some help here. i need to figure out witch colors i need to make my deck.
I'm properly going to face these decks:
Abzan
Affinity
Scapeshift
bluemoon
infect
Twin
Zoo
some sort of dredgevine
Tron G/r and Utron
Amulet of vigor
Burn
So i want to either play Naya, Temur or Gruul. Could you guys help me figure out what's the best route to go is?
As i see the diffrent color combinations:
Temur: got counterspells and card draw. maybe even more hand filtering (izzet charm This build would allso be a less creature heavy deck and focus more on instant/sorceries
Not sure in modern as a whole but in my local shops, Wilt-Leaf Liege + friends are absolutely everywhere right now (even in Soul Sisters) so Raven's Crime suddenly got terrible. Throwing me for a loop but I switched my two out for a Damnation and a Terminate until that trend dies down a bit.
I'Ve been disapointed by abrupt decay lately. Maybe it is just the matchups but it often sit in my hand doing nothing vs rhinos, wurmcoils, titans (amulet), etc. I've replaced those with terminate, the card currently seems pretty good. It is slightly worst vs twin but vs everything else it seems better. What do you think, am i overreacting?
Can be countered which is sometimes relevant, can't kill a Blood Moon are the two reasons I can think of. Reid Duke recently put up a sample Jund list on his modern gauntlet articles and he included 2 Terminate maindeck and 1 in the side. Different deck sure, but it just shows you that others agree its a good card in the format right now. I went 1-2 drop (with Jund) out of this week's local tournament, bringing my match records to 0-3 vs Burn and 0-3 vs Soul Sisters w/Lieges. Even lost both games against Sisters I had Everlasting Torment. I basically seem to get it together about a turn too late against these decks, close games but 0-6 is brutal. Back to the drawing board.
In the end you're going to terminate in response to twin while they are tapped out for it, so that really shouldn't be an issue.
That is some bad luck getting caught against those decks every week. I'll think up some solutions. Your best bet is to run s list with strong creatures like goyf, crusher, etc. So you can race life gain of Sisters and save your terminates for the lieges since assault can fairly easily clean up everything else.
Here is my list. I was playing a GR list at states 8 months ago with simian spirit guide blood moon main and started the day 3-0 crushing everything. Lost to a lucky pod player when he mulled to 5 game 2 and beat me. Then it was all down hill. I am going to the SCG this weekend in Maryland. Here is my list. Thoughts?
GRB Loam:
4 Faithless Looting
3 Lightning Bolt
1 Flame Jab
4 Life From The Loam
3 Abrupt Decay
2 Terminate
1 Maelstrom Pulse
3 Seismic Assault
1 Wurm Harvest
4 Young Pyromancer
3 Tarmogoyf
2 Countryside Crusher
2 Huntsmaster Of The Fells (MVP #2)
2 Tasigur, The Golden Fang (MVP #1)
3 Obstinate Baloth
2 Shattering Spree
2 Deathmark
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Golgari Charm
1 Rakdos Charm
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Torpor Orb
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Slaughter Games
1 Sowing Salt
So, I have been playing loam for a long time now. Tasigur is the real deal. Helps in so many match ups. Draws you all sorts of cards. He has been amazing. Seriously, I think he is the one thing I needed. Young Pyromancer has been very solid for me. I don't play the traditional version with thought seize, lili etc. I don't think it is really needed in the meta.
This is probably what I play. Hopefully I will do well!
It does matter. We are not a turn 4 deck so games will drag a bit longer vs twin. A good twin player will never cast twin turn 4 while the opponent has removal mana open, they will wait for that window were they have twin + counter back up available. Still i'm willing to play terminate because it is just so much better vs everything else.
They're probably putting you on decay over terminate anyway in a black green build. So it would also make sense to try and race your ability to land assault with lands in hand since that is what they should be more worried about. At that point they don't really win. Some mix of the 2 is probably correct.
I did and I still think Mentor is a sleeping giant in the format, but I spent my budget on other cards so haven't built it to play in tournaments yet. I also think it's just not the best Mentor deck, I think when I do get them I will probably try to make a UW tempo type of shell around it with Disrupting Shoals. But that's another topic, I did test it in Assault and it seemed like the best secondary win-con I've played in the deck yet so I suggest giving it a shot and see if you can come up with a list you like to share with us! I'm playing 2 Tasigur, 1 Sc. Ooze, and a couple other things that would probably be better as Mentors post-board if the opponent has sufficient grave-hate. Far more powerful than Pyromancer in my opinion.
At the same time pyromancer is active turn 2 and has to be answered as opposed to an opponent casting a goyf or what have you. Mentor doesn't come online before twin kills us, affinity can put the finals nails in the coffin, liliana can drop, goyf has already been deployed so a removal spell is on curve for them, etc. That's my one issue with mentor In the wrong build Especially against the wrong deck.
Mentor does seem very strong. The only problem is that the Jund shell is just so much better than the Naya shell. Just having Abrupt Decay is more important than any card Naya has to offer. He is also easier to kill than Crusher. I rather just play crusher than mentor.
I'm sitting at my work atm. so i haven't really looked into it. but this would be my initial version i think. Maybe cut the souls for something else. And Worm harvest could maybe be good aswell?
I wouldn't mind seeing brave the elements as it will pump your monk team as well as allow them to push damage through blockers, also protects your monks from non-destroy sweepers.

Gruul: and focus more on a blood moon build.
i'd appreciate all inputs. Why the diffrenent versions are better against my meta.
And as i see it. the deck has a core which is:
3x life from the loam
4x faithless looting
3x seismic assault
Ravens crime is probably the best card available to this deck right now

Burn is where a suggest dragons claw.
