Played in a small 3 round tourney at my LGS. I quickly put the deck together before hand and I didn't realized I had screwed up the mana base. The deck was still pretty sweet. I went 1-2. I lost to Burn, beat DS Jund, and lost to Affinity.
Round 1 VS Burn 0-2
I lost G1 after missing some land drops. I fought well in the beginning and just needed to get to a point where I could cast multiple spells in a turn but the lack of land ruined that plan. G2 was a close one. I had him dead with a Colonnade swing but he had a couple cards in hand and I was at 2 life so I wanted to keep my mana available. He eventually drew a couple more burn spells and I couldn't counter them all.
Round 2 VS Death's Shadow Jund 2-1
G1 was a simple back and forth which eventually was ended by two Bolts after he had done a bunch of damage to himself. G2 he tore my hand apart and ended the game quickly. In G3 I dropped a Rest in Peace to shut off multiple Goyfs and I burned him out.
Round 3 VS Affinity 0-2
Sometimes Affinity just has unbeatable draws. This was one of those times.
I do enjoy jamming Geist but I will be trying out the Geist-less, flash version in the next tourney I play. I will run this list next:
Hey guys, I'm building this as a variant of having the Jeskai collection of cards. I tried Nahiri Jeskai last week and it didnt do as well so I thought I'd come around to midrange and have a go at it! Here is my starting point. I'm still working on trading or buying the Celestial Colonnade, however, no one local has any. Here is the deck so far!
Edit: I made a couple deck tweaks after play testing.
Edit 2: I took out the Failure // Comply I was testing with. I put in a Logic Knot and increased the copies of Pull from Tomorrow. I really think Pull might be a really good card and have an edge over Sphinx's Revelation even with the discard and the non life gain. Casting it with 5 mana seems to be the right amount drawing 3 and discarding the inevitable land.
Zombie tribal has been very aggressive and popular online, at least in my playtesting. It might not be at my homestore meta. Ill just have to see. The 2/3 butt helps establish a line in the sand and returning Relentless Dead to their owners hand with a turn pause on it is better than killing it. I'm also thinking of going up to 3 Rest in Peace in the side since it and goryo's vengeance seems to be on everyone's brain with graveyard matters amonkhet.
I think you will really like pull from tomorrow. The restock is good at 5 mana and the restock is great at 6 mana. It really helps put you over the top and dig for more removal and answers.
A couple reasons to play pull. Life gain isn't as relevant since helix provides that outlet. It's one Mana less. The discard isn't as bad as you'll usually throw the extra land. If not what you pitch can be a snap target. I think it's worth the slots. In an end game top draw it can definitely fuel the win and has for me.
I'm not much for not running a cantrip. One land hands are plenty keepable if it's a blue source. If you are on the draw that's 4 cards you get to go through. Five if you count the card under the scry. I'd much rather be shy on land than run 25. 3-4 can be the sweet spot and you can still snap a helix or leak. 25 allows you to blink snap and cast something but I'd rather have more spells in general then extra land steps. If it's working for you then that's fine.
I think Polluted Delta is a fine substitute. If you're going to be fetching a basic, it's going to be Island 90% of the time. I think Delta is better than more Vents or Sulfur Falls since it can grab Hallowed Fountain as well. I've managed to do well for myself running Delta before, and it doesn't hurt your percentages that much.
I am also planning to play GP Copenhagen and wanted to discuss our sideboard options and maybe even try to write in detailed sideboard plan.
What kind of different option people are running now and what matchups other then DeathShadow do you think we need to concentrate on?
Lighthouse is great. Definitely worth trying out. Very helpful when I need to get rid of fetches in my hand. Lavamancer has just been okay. Hasnt been great ever but its also never terrible. I put it in after I stopped playing Logic Knot so that I could get some use out of my graveyard.
Hey guys, I've been thinking of making a jeskai geist deck but wanted to know if this deck was okay. I played jeskai nahiri but it isn't working so well right now so I thought a different game plan to change things up would be good. Any particular card you guys recommend adding or cutting from this list and reasons for them?
Nevermind. Censor is terrible, forget I mentioned it.
Played against burn twice last night. Lavamancer and Queller felt terrible. They just gave Searing Blaze targets. I am going to drop Lavamancer for a Shadow of Doubt. It feels well positioned to get some people game one and it's definitely a personal favorite.
@lynii - Deprive is bad in this deck. We prefer to hit all our early land drops so bouncing our second land can really slow us down. Deprive is better in a Delver deck
I'm pretty happy with my main deck, although I am playing with different 2cmc counters. My main point of concern is the Aven Mindcensor in the SB. I just don't know if it's that good in this meta. It helps against Tron and Traverse though.
What's everyone favoring for their sideboard lately?
Played in my LGS' Tuesday Night Modern event tonight since I'm finally back from college for the summer. Had a disappointing 2-2. Here's the list I played:
Round 1: Abzan CoCo (with Devoted Druid + White Vizier + Walking Ballista)
I won game 1 handily, and then game 2 was a long, long grind fest. At one point he had like 8-10 creatures in play, one of which was an unpersisted Kitchen Finks, and I was just absolutely dead on board. I drew a Cryptic to tap+draw and drew a Snapcaster. I had a Wrath in the bin already. I think I drew a land on my draw step and played it and passed. I flashed back the Cryptic and tapped+bounced my Snapcaster, letting me see another card that I wouldn't have by flashing back the Wrath on my turn. I drew a Surgical Extraction, cast the Snapcaster flashing back the Wrath and hitting his Finks with the trigger on the stack with Surgical. I took a few draw steps and eventually he just found a Ballista that he played for 4 and just domed me. Lighthouse shined in this game by letting me dig and dig for answers. Game three he comboed me with Ballista.
Round 2: Living End
My opponent had played at the table next to me the round before and I noticed he was on Living End. This lead to me keeping a hand of 2x Path, Hallowed Fountain and 4 other non-lands thinking it would be good enough. He played a turn 3 Fulminator and I hadn't seen another land so I just scooped because my opponent had said he didn't know what I was on as we were shuffling up for game one. Game two I played a turn 2 Rest in Peace, and my opponent stated that he had left his Krosan Grips in the sideboard (which seems like a horrible oversight since he knew I was playing white). I played a turn 4 Gideon and he lost a few turns later. He mulliganed to 5 game three and I played a Geist at some point and finished him off quickly.
Round 3: Affinity
I mulliganed to 5 game one, which basically means I might as well have just not played given how explosive Affinity is (and I knew what my opponent was on since he's THE affinity guy at our shop). My notes have me going from 17 to 1 so obviously he had a huge boardstate, though I don't remember the specifics. Game two he ended up with three Platings in play at once and no creatures, I played a Jace with one mana up for a Bolt thinking I could Bolt anything he played and be ok. He played an Etched Champion. Can't Bolt that.
Round 4: Tron
I got the pair up to one of my friends so I just conceeded to him so he could get prizes since I was out of contention. We played it out anyway and I took it 2-1. I mulled to 6 game one and he went to 5. I fought through an Ulamog being cast and hitting me once, and we were both at 1 going into what would have been my last turn. Lighting Helix on top took game 1. Game two I just got very Tron-ed and game three I kept an iffy one-lander since the match didn't really matter and I had a Hallowed Fountain, Ceremonious Rejection, Negate, Path and 2 Helixes. I thought it was pretty fine since Rejection and Negate do good work in the matchup. I ended up just beating him down as he stumbled.
Thoughts:
I want a 24th land really bad, and I don't know how I feel about Gideon in the main. I think if I want a 4 mana planeswalker, it should be Elspeth, Knight-Errant, and that's what I'll be playing on Friday. I think I'll probably trim the Spell Snare (doesn't seem great right now, at least in my meta), Gideon and the Valorous Stance for a 24th land and 2x Elspeth.
