FluffyWolf divined up a Pyro Prison deck based upon Direct Damage and Spectacular mechanics. He left behind the Bridge, and soldiered forth in a Modern Competitive Tournament on MODO. Brother nailed down a 5-0, AND he faced two Hardened Scales decks. It was a blast to watch.
So, I tweaked it a little bit, and tried a Casual League. 3-2. Losses were to Spirits (usually a favored matchup) and B/W Edlrazi (coin flip). I removed any utility land that couldn't get us red (Except g. cavern). I dropped the curve way down since we're cheating in the spells, and hopefully drawing through for the win - only (2) 4-Cmc spells.
Thoughts: Again, this is Fluffy's idea and this is my very similar build. Ummmmm....who knows It's very early on. I would say that I think 1 mystery to solve is Rift Bolt vs. Skewer: which is better? Can we still pack larger CMC spells? Are we hopelessly overrun in game 1 without 4 Bridge in the main? Are there enough damage points to an opponent that can trigger our Spectacular cheat codes?
Biggest Initial Drawback: That's easy to answer. Sideboard. This build hogs up our slots with (4) Bridge and (4) Anger plus the need for any other cards which can serve as 2-cmc quick protect spells like (1) Abrade and (1) Spellskite. That leaves us with FIVE slots.
But, I did add a later 4-drop spell, since we're so light on them in the main deck. Burning Earth. It delivered a phenomenal win against Tron, and I can see it working in more traditional Pyro Prison lists as well.
Can someone explains me how eidolon and bridge works together. For me is weird. U can't have cards in hand but the same time u are punish for casting them.
Can someone explains me how eidolon and bridge works together. For me is weird. U can't have cards in hand but the same time u are punish for casting them.
You are correct, it's awkward at times, but this is not the meta from early 2018. There are very few decks that use 1 power creatures now, so if eidolon ever becomes a problem, you can always just start attacking with it until they block and kill it. But it's also another lock piece vs the spell heavy decks. Looking at you, UR Thing and storm!
So, I streamed Showtime's deck last night and it was awesome. Felt great. I like his theory on spot removal and in this meta, he's 100% correct. I would love to find more aggressive 2 drops, but sadly, they don't exist in modern right now for mono red.
Changes I would make.....
#1. Using Grafdiggers cage in place of Leyline. Yes, Leyline is more powerful and there's no debate when dealing with Graveyard strategies. However, Cage also deals with Collected Company, eldrich Evolution, MadCap experiment, and Collected company. The added versatility of cage is huge and being able to cast it when in the draw and it's the first draw of the game is also good. We've all played with Leylines and we've all gotten the dreaded..."this hand is good enough, keep, 1st draw, leyline" hand. Cage doesn't have that problem. With KCI out of the picture, there's no need to actually exile the cards, so cage is my pick.
Also, I didn't play vs control, but I feel we need a solid 4 more aggressive cards to bring in vs control. if we take out 4 bridges, I want 4 more aggro cards coming in. Or at least two. I can see spyglass coming in to stop the planeswalkers and spellskite to protect the team, but I would struggle to find two additional cards to bring in. Maybe we keep the bridges to aviod getting blown out by baneslayer angel. Maybe we drop 3-ball for a 2nd spyglass to deal with the planeswalkers. I don't know, but it's something worth thinking about.
All said, I'm going to test it more. I am usually on the stock list with 2 abrade and 2 slagstorm maindeck, but replacing those with 4 eidolon felt great. Plus, we have access to the same 2 abrade and 4 anger effect post board in the event we get matched up against spirits or humans. I like how you think, showtime, about each card having maximum impact and I'm on board. Lets continue to fine tune the deck and make it even better!!
oh, and combust also deals with an angel and thing in the ice cleanly and can be another piece of removal vs spirits, especially with the 1/3 dudes grow out of anger range. something to think about.....
@Migueljf: Stickballruss explained the 'odd couple' perfectly. Early Eidolon can serve to present a clock, block/trade a creature, or shut down a spell heavy deck. As for times in games 2 and 3, you will still leave in BOTH cards against: Grixis Death's Shadow, TitanShift, AmuletTitan and Thing In the Ice-U/R.
@Stickballruss: Sharp observation on Combust making a comeback. What was once a card specifically engineered to combat Splinter Twin decks has now got usage against the newest of scourge Thing in the Ice. It's narrow, but also the perfect answer card to a deck that's dominating the meta these days. Restoration Angel, yeah. Spirits. And, anything that knocks Thalia on her buttocks is fine by me.
@Showtime_MTG: How did you arrive at your assemblage? Any lessons learned along the way that could serve as cautionary tales ("don't try this - it doesn't work"). Jaya Ballard, Task Mage has been a star...see above regarding comments on TiTi and a crafty way to derail U/W Control too. Russ talked about upping the threat count. My top pick: What about Pia and Kiran Nalaar?? They are dynamite against TiTi, Jund, B/G Rock, GDS, and U/W control.
Mulling over taking a cue from Ponza and trying to build a land destruction version of Prison. What do people think?

All 3 of my losses came from red based decks (2x burn and 1x mono red phoenix).
Do you guys keep in your bridges or add in cages vs mono red phoenix? They have enough burns to kill you hiding behind a bridge, but their creatures(reveler and phoenix) are also annoy to deal with. its a weird sideboard matchup.
Also burn seems a lot harder now that they pack skrewer the critics. One was able to get me after i kind of locked them out behind moon and chalice on 1 but they had enough 3 mana burns to get through.
I also changed to 4 eidolon maindeck. They been great.

@jokerstyle00 I ran some rains in the side the past couple weeks before getting my eidolons on modo. It can be really good or bad depending on the matchup. Really fun when it works though.

Went 4-1 again, beat 3x tron decks(really lucky) and death shadow. Lost to Humans(triple meddling mage game 3 on Chandra, Koth, and Anger). I had 3x bridge down but draw one of each of the named card and he played venser to bounce a bridge to get my hand size big enough to swing to lethal.
Hey Jokerstyle - The land destruction angle has been tried. The biggest issue is that Molten Rain and Stone Rain cost 3. And, that slot is sooooo overcrowded for us. With Modern being so fast, it's hard to get ahead of people with mana dorks or utopia sprawl on an LD plan.
xBankX1 - Taking the boots to the competition and giving them a kickin' (4) 4-1s in the last couple days. Outstanding! As for mono-red Burn, I do keep in some Bridges. If it's straight red Burn 'traditional', then I take out all of the bridges. What do I bring in against Phoenix, mono-red?

I faced that R/w Dragonrider deck last (different pilot), and he 2-0ed me. Like a typical mirror, lucky draws play a big role. Nonetheless, it’s an intriguing list. Rule of Law (damping sphere) becomes quality Leyline of sanctity (witchbane orb) is a house WITH a huge back porch Rest In Peace (leyline of the void / ravenous trap) has lots of applications. Lightning Helix (abrade/magma jet) becomes necessary in a world of Burn. However, I’ve remarked before that the first 3 gained life is usually negated by fetch/shock. Stony silence (damping matrix) turns off mana abilities as well as green lights our use of Hazoret and Jaya.
We’ve been putting 2nd string plAyers on the field forever. Why? Traditionally Pale Moon decks simply don’t win.
Is this Meta the dawning of a new Red Sun rising?
WHITE SUN???
The deck is the definition of a Toolbox deck. All threats are frontloaded. The SB holds all answers. NOW, is this the new and next best??? Hmmmmm.....will merely say that it comes with mana discipline costs: R/W is hard to blend especially when you're trying to land a blood moon asap.
I did take out a revision for a spin in the Competitive Modern Challenge. QUESTION: as ever and always |||| Is White Worth it?
Well, in this rodeo. I am
MAINDECK: (3) White spells --- troubling [2 helix and 1 ajani, vengeant]
SIDEBOARD: (9) White Spells --- reassuring

Ironically I took a break from Prison to mess around with Ponza, since it was getting a little stressful trying to make good plays with the deck; today, however, I faced another player at my LGS running Prison, which smoked my Ponza. It was really funny in a tragic sort of way being on the receiving end of Chalice for once.

I was considering to try out Showtime_'s deck list (with small changes in SB) first and see how it goes, which is:
hello guys, I would like to upgrade on the deck since I do not play with it, could anyone tell you which matches are highly favorable, favorable, 50/50 and bad of this new configuration with 4x legion warboss?
I want to play the GP with this deck and I want to study what I can improve on the 50/50 and bad matches. thankful!
I knew I was against UB Faeries. I am also on the draw. I knew a quick threat would mean a huge upper hand to me. Everything inside me was screaming Mulligan because this is such a risky hand but I just couldn't help but think that Chandra is a house even on turn 3 or 4 let alone turn 1. 'But if you play Chandra turn 1, add two mana and play Chalice on 1 it might be enough to just take the game,' I thought to myself. But I also might never be able to play another spell after I make that decision. Would it really be enough?
"I'll keep."
Oh God. We're in this now. Opponent plays Island, go.
No Sarkhan for me... Opponent draws. Doesn't draw a way to prevent Chandra's ult. Scoops.
Sigh of relief. Chandra just stole that damn game. Also, I apparently enjoy taking unnecessary risks that lead to extremely stressful games.
Just ported to this deck from a legacy Dragon Stompy background.
Your opponent should really counter your ritual with his spell snare there.
The reason being that if you get to 3 mana and land a blood moon, that may be game over unless his hand is basics heavy.
I still think countering the ritual there will yield more benefits that letting you to three mana for whatever pieces (ie Blood Moon, Sarkhan, Bridge) you may have.
