I think they do. There are decks that use the graveyard for more than just flashback and get hurt by RiP far more (Storm, Dredge, Reanimator, etc.), and we're one of them.
Some my thoughts after this League: Manlands showed themselves much better than Emerias in current metagame but I don't want to cut single Weathered wayfarer for 3rd Thraben Inspector. Deck still need him.
Also I'm thinking about adding 2 Rule of Law in sideboard against combo decks while waiting Dominaria set with their Spheres.
Weathered Wayfarer is a really tough cut. I might go down to one in my main, one in the side, but it's too good against Tron to really be considered a major cut target for me.
I run 2 Eidolon of Rhetoric, so I definitely think a second Rule of Law makes sense.
@BoBoCTiberius
Yeah, he's great against Tron but in a lot of other games I had felling like he's just 1/1 for W that doesn't improve other match ups anyhow. In situations where he can be usefull - he always got killed turn 1.
That's why I tried 3rd Inspector instead of him.
I also thought about Eidolons but I want my hate be less vulnarable against removal spells. For example Ad Nauseum sides in a lot of removal spells.
So that's why I have chosen Rule of Law.
When Damping Sphere will be released, I don't think I will be playing Rule of Law anymore.
About what cards to cut from last decklist:
-1 Caustic Caterpillar (I don't see need of playing him nowadays so I guess this will not be painfull cut while I still have Fracturing Gust in wishboard)
-1 Meddling Mage (I think that Gaddock Teeg in game one should be enough to win game while opponent doesn't have SB answers for him and postside we will have a lot of Spheres)
-1 Supreme Verdict (Not sure about this cut but it have some reasons - in most games I usually cats 1 Supreme from wishboard, it's pretty rare situation when I need 2nd. Also I hope that 3 Wrath cards in main will be enough. Actually, better look what meta will be)
-1 Narset Transcendent (Well, we already have Ajani in wishboard as CA planeswalker that will be replaced by Teferi, so I don't see any need of 2nd Planeswalker card here)
+4 Damping Sphere.
Actually it's just first thoughts how I will cut. If metagame will go more for Aggro/Midrange/Control decks, I guess SB plan will be different with less Spheres.
I think I need to rebuild my manabase, go away from Flagstones and GQ, adding Field of Ruins and 4 Fetches to get my 2 extra colors in time.
Also I wonder if it will be better to go away from blue to black color for Wishboard optimisation like: exchange Supreme Verdict + Fracturing Gust to Merciless eviction and etc. It will be especially important when I will be adding 4 of Sphere of Resistence.
What's your thoughts?
@Jiskel
Actually, it's pretty hard to contain more than 4 colorless lands in 3+ colored manabase. Bcs Weathered wayfarer isn't working well for me so I don't see big advantage of having 5th LD land and colorless source.
About colors. I also like Abzan variation but I think it's better suited for nonWish version (bcs black doesn't give 4-mana wrath card) with Aylies and Abzan Ascendancy and with token generator planeswalkers like 4-mana Gideon or Elspeth. (tribal on Elspeth, mmm? ) Mmm.. Midrange like with disruption and removals?
But black still give a lot of powerfull options. And I'm going to test light splash on black in Bant version by adding Watery Grave for optimization my Sideboard and Wishboard to get more space.
Some exchanges I would like to see: Fracturing Gust ----> Merciless Eviction ( I don't like Idea of killing my Detention Spheres and Azcantas) Meddling Mage ----> Kambal, Consul of Allocation (last one is good Wish-card against Burn
Also I want try out Blood Baron of Vizkopa
I don't see much use of Refuge - it's colorless, got killed my LD very fast and pretty expensive - total 3 mana for activation.
Oh, I see. Actually, I think GQ + Flagstones is pretty slow mana stabilization and went away from it unless I'm on 1 or 2 colored manabase.
Baron is better bcs he casts much easier (5 colored sources sometimes are a problem) and lifegain is relevant. Oversoul is better againsg Jund and Grixis like more protected creature as Sigarda.
And you mentioned it right - you can kill with Blood baron against Shadow in one strike.
Yeah, same feelings. Also very important term of it - this card EXILES. It's much easier to exile bogle than break all enchantments or Lantern can't get back his Bridges or stuff with Ruins and etc.
Kambal is better - he can be used more widely: he's better against Strom bcs Storm decks have a lot of unswers hor him while Kambal works close to Rule of law. He also can be used against Burn, Control decks and etc like life drain creatures, make opp's life very painfull.
About Ad Nauseum - Gaddock Teeg is usually enough for first game and Kambal can speed up a clock. Also Kambal kills through Phyrexian Unlife bcs he make opp loose life not take dmg. And ther're a lot of small + Kambal has.
Search for Azcanta is incredible in less creature based version. I even started playin 2 copies like 0.5 of Land instead of 24th. Also it's looting effect helps a lot.
I alos like that 5 and 6 mana Elspeths have "wrath of god" lind of effects. I mean they can protect themselves pretty good and still make good pressure on opponent with their tokens. Also tokens are great foor for sac engines. Maybe it will be worth trying Orzhov or Abzan midrange with new Legendary Moxes.
I was thinking about all this options but it strongly depends on you main secondary color. I prefer blue and have a lot of blue cards fron 2nd to 4th drop so I'm playing Flooded strand instead of Windswept Heath, so I can't play non Island lands. Also for light splash I think it's important that it should be tutorable by fetches or something else. Also there're option to add basic Swamp for GQ or FoR.
@Jiskel
And do you have Marsh Flats? I think they will suit much better while you don't have Search for Azcantas and other cheap UW spells.
Also you can trade for free 1 Mistveil plain into 1 Mystic Gate to cast Sphinx's revelation much more comfortable.
Actually, you can try split of GW and UG manladnds if you don't have any Celestial Colonnade, changing same time you manabase with shocklands.
Also I don't see much use if Cycland for now with 23 lands (without any ramp as Azcanta or Crucible) - I would prefer to maximaze manabase's stabilisation.
About nonHuman meta - don't you want then just 3 Supremes mainboard? Or you're afraid of Blood moon effects?
Super brand new, pardon the formatting. Want to report in and say thanks to everyone that's contributed to this thread so far because it's awesomesauce.
Took Martyrs to a small local yesterday and did ok. 3rd overall out of 7 I think. Well enough to obtain an amount of credit *just* large enough to cover next week's entry
R1: Infect. Game 1 they got screwed real bad. Game 2 I couldn't find the removal spell and lost pretty quick. Game 3 I had the removal with a Ghost Quarter for their Inkmoth Nexus. Got to 4 mana and cast Gideon, Ally of Zendicar to eventually run away with the game. But! If they were able to make a creature unblockabke or stick a Blighted Agent, I could have easily lost.
R2: Ally Mill. Game 1 they just came up short where I opened with the nuts. Serra, Martyr, Hawks, Orzhov Charm and a couple lands. Game 2 and 3 were very grindy. Honestly I forget the name of the card, but they were able to establish a favorable board position and pick my graveyard clean during my Upkeep (I wish I remembered the name of the creature that allowed this). I scooped game 3 due to the fact we were very close to time and they were just that far ahead. I had boarded in Leyline of Sanctity but didn't find any for the opening hand, and they all got milled. Same with Wraths. Either of those may have gotten me back in the game.
G3: The Rack. The Rack only works exceptionally well with discard spells. Which my opponent couldn't seem to find. Also, Squadron Hawk. Ranger of Eos and Serra Ascendant finished the games pretty quick.
I'll come back with my 75 once I figure out how the interface works but I drew heavily on Demanic's deck, and borrowed tech from a couple others throughout this thread.
Overall I feel like if we can execute the Martyr plan, that generally seems to give a certain degree of inevitability against decks that aren't certain combos or mill strategies. Not bad for a control deck in Modern.
It's budget enough, and I've found a good deal on a playset of Serra Ascendant that convinced me to give it a go
I see that mono-coloured decks are not really favored in the most recent pages of this topic. Any reason why ?
The meta in my LGS is mostly composed of : Junds (a lot), Affinity, a few Humans, some Lanterns, some Goblins and Burn. A few UW or Jeskai control here and there but not too many. Do you think this deck can fare well against these opponents ? What's your experience against Jund, most importantly ?
Thanks for your help, and I hope my list is not too outdated ^^

Semoreh, I'm not one of the more experienced players here, but I'm debating going back to the Mono-W list over the Orzhov version. Mono-W feels faster and more consistent, and is able to run more GQ/FoR to fight against Tron. The Orzhov version is able to run Castigate which helps against combo, and Orzhov Charm for better protection/recursion of Martyr/Serra along with being removal if needed. Sometimes the fetch/shock lands are the difference between being above 30 life and under 30 life, which has made a difference in a few games.
I'm really intrigued by the Glittering Wish versions to provide a toolbox, but I haven't tried it out yet.
I do find the Orzhov more fun and interesting to play than mono-W, and that may be even more the case with the 3-color versions. I'm interested to see other's perspectives on this question.
Thanks for your answer
I can see the interest of Orzhov. Merciless Eviction is pretty versatile too ! I'll read the previous pages to see the glittering wish lists.
I've been trying the deck on mtgo (open play). As expected I got wins against Death's Shadow and burn, but surprisingly I lost against a spicy Lightning Ball tribal (every creature tramples and deals between 6 and 8 damage total, that was too much to handle even if I gained a lot of life) and a random Soulflayer deck (I couldn't handle the opponent's yard very well, and Hexproof-Indestrutible creatures are unbeatable).
Against both these decks, I've been wishing I had some Settle the Wreckage in the side ^^

I've been watching the replays of Lear's leagues playing Bant Martyr (with Wishes) and I must say the list looks great in action. Especially the last one with the revamped mana base (which used to be awful with the Flagstones).
My only complaint is that it seems a bit harder to close games without the Serra Ascendants... I know you're afraid of being stuck under 30 hp but I'm sure we can jam some somewhere. Thraben is ok but maybe as a 1-of. I was impressed by Kami of False Hope, though.
Wishes themselves were a bit slow but often proved useful. Same for the manlands (especially Stirring Wildwood). I don't know if I'm ready yet to take the leap but that's definitely interesting. I love Wheel of Sun and Moon I've seen on the previous page, it's a great secret tech against KCI, Storm, Dredge, etc.
Detention Sphere and Supreme Verdicts are without a doubt an upgrade to Oblivion Rings and Wrath of Gods, but I can't see myself playing Azorius because it would be very much alike my Emeria Titan list and I like my decks to be distinctive from each other... unless I ditch Emeria Titan altogether.
Played my second league with the deck in my LGS last week, and can confirm to it being slow to close out games. I finished 2-1-drop (couldn't start round 4), winning jund and affinity, losing to eldrazi tron thanks to some bad decisions and allowing it to retain an Endbringer on board for way too long. That last match took almost 40 min for game 1 to end, and since I didn't found glittering wish, didn't have anything to finish the game, despite the 3/2's and 1/1's on board.
In my previous league I tried something close the Lear's bant lists that did well in a challenge last year, but the mana was a little rough to allow supreme verdict on the main, and it didn't perform well in a meta full of blood moon decks. It was last year so I don't remember my matches, except that it won against jeskai control and lost to burn (!!!) -- he had all the skullcracks.
In this second atempt I tried an GW version, with a blue splash for bullets on the side. With 2-color manabase we can run a playset of field of ruin and lots of basics. Against infect got to field of ruin inkmoth#1, renegade rallier taking field of ruin and killing inkmoth#2. block the non flying wielder of cranial plating, and next turn fracturing gust all that was left. feels good.
List in question:
Keep in mind that said list is focused in my LGS metagame, hence no wheel of sun and moon. Sundering growth is specifically for chalice of the void and leyline for discards. The variety of card advantage engines is great, and it felt great to play a nonblue control deck (I was playing blue moon in the previous weeks, and will try faeries in the following ones).
PS: I think Lear's wishlists have too many wincons... I opted for 3 win cons only: Geist against combo, Sky Hussar against control (win by card advantage), and Sigarda against midrange.
@Semoreh: I've found maindeck settle the wreckage to be effective, especially with Bogles and 5-c Humans running around. It can be a non-bo with ghostly prison out, but that's not a bad problem to have.
I used to play MTGO Open play, but I got hated on by some people for using a "good deck". Tournament practice isn't much more spikey, and there are plenty of players on it. Has anyone else been hated out of the open play area on MTGO?
@L0rdi02 Is the list you posted the one you've brought to a 2-1-1 result or is it a new version ?
Rallier has neats interactions (with Martyr, Fetches, Field of Ruins) but I can never trust the guy. Each time I saw him being played it underperformed. I'd probably cut them to add 1 Gideon Jura, 1 Gideon of the Trials and 1 Sun Titan. Or a 4th Ranger of Eos.
Are the Ghostly Prison really useful ? Honest question.
The mana base looks ok, but I'm wondering if there are enough plains to consistently trigger Emeria. What has been your experience ? Because if we ditch the Emeria plan we could add a basic Island and a few Stirring Wildwoods like in Lear's list. And that could make the blue splash consistent enough that we'd be able to add Detention Spheres MD instead of O-rings/Banishing Lights.
@jthomas3592 : I use mtgo's open play just as I use Cockatrice. You can always run in whiny players, but if you're in the Tournament Practice part of the Open Play Area their "arguments" fall flat.
I think I like the 2-1 split between Wrath and Settle the Wreckage, although I could see myself regretting it sometimes. It deserves some testing

Actually, you can splash red for Dragonmaster and feel much more safe against Blood moons and land based decks thanks to Nahiri, the Harbinger and Crumble to Dust. But I think Dragonmaster won't do much work, bcs meta is pretty fast and he will be like Weathered wayfarer.
Another option - you can try Mikaeus, the Lunarch or Kytheon, Hero of Akros and etc. Some 1 drop creatures that can give interestion angles of attack of defence.
Other funny options in blue: Embodiment of Spring, Sidisi's Faithfu (lul), Realmwright (we hate blood moon)
Yeah, main problem of Sorin Tribal - they can't defend themselves while other white planeswalker can defend and create boardpresence same time.
Ew, yeah, I'm a bit dumb. No, still didn't test it but in plans.

I'm seriously considering builing the mono W version of this deck, as streamed by SaffronOlive three months ago :
10 Plains
2 Emeria, the Sky Ruin
1 Field of Ruin
4 Flagstones of Trokair
4 Ghost Quarter
2 Mistveil Plains

2 Weathered Wayfarer (or Thraben Inspectors)
1 Celestial Purge
1 Crucible of Worlds
2 Disenchant

2 Leyline of Sanctity
1 Runed Halo
1 Stony Silence
1 Gaddock Teeg
1 Detention Sphere
1 Teferi's Moat
1 Kitchen Finks
1 Sundering Growth
1 Supreme Verdict
1 Fracturing Gust
1 Geist of Saint Traft
1 Sigarda, Host of Herons
1 Sky Hussar
Keep in mind that said list is focused in my LGS metagame, hence no wheel of sun and moon. Sundering growth is specifically for chalice of the void and leyline for discards. The variety of card advantage engines is great, and it felt great to play a nonblue control deck (I was playing blue moon in the previous weeks, and will try faeries in the following ones).
PS: I think Lear's wishlists have too many wincons... I opted for 3 win cons only: Geist against combo, Sky Hussar against control (win by card advantage), and Sigarda against midrange.
I used to play MTGO Open play, but I got hated on by some people for using a "good deck". Tournament practice isn't much more spikey, and there are plenty of players on it. Has anyone else been hated out of the open play area on MTGO?
