I played Esper tonight at Modern. My record doesn't reflect it (I went 1-3), but the list felt great. I played against Hardened Scales (2-1), UW Spirits (0-2), Humans (1-2), and Burn (1-2). I made several misplays vs. UW Spirits that cost me the match, and had poor luck against Humans. My Humans opponent played 2 Meddling Mages and 2 Phantasmal Images -- on Push, Path, Snapcaster, and Verdict -- over 2 turns (he had Vial) before I drew any removal spells. He then killed me with Kessig Malcontents and the THIRD Phantasmal Image the turn before I could flip the Terminus on top (I set it up with a Jace) to blow him out. The Burn games were close, and I won 2 more games post board when we played for fun.
Kaya was actually very good, and I think 1 Kaya is good as some mainboard life gain and an alt wincon. It wrecked Scales (hitting Hardened Scales, Animation Module, Hangarback Walker, etc.). Kaya felt a lot worse in the Nihil Spellbomb/Verdict/Serum Visions list I was playing, since it's so hard to find a window to cast it, but, when almost everything else costs 1/2 mana, Kaya doesn't feel so clunky anymore. Again, the 3rd Field might be a little greedy, but it's a good card.
I know I've been mostly absent over the last 18 months. I have a two week block of leave scheduled in June; for one of those weeks I'll be at a scout camp, but for the other I'll be mostly free so I intend to overhaul the primer, which last had a good cleanup in 2016.

Welcome FoF to modern!! I don’t think it will be as appealing with Jace in the format, even more with the newly spoiled Force of Negation but we definitely spent time waiting for it.
I guess I'll run 1 in the sideboard, maybe 1 in the main. I don't see what to cut : 2 Spell Snare, 2 Logic Knot, 4 Cryptic Command. This feels stock and FoF serves another purpose than those regular counterspell. We'll see what testing tells us.
I really love this card, played it for ages in 1v1 Commander. Thus I was really excited when it got reprinted and I initially cut an Esper Charm for it.
But the more I think of it... Imagine you flip over 4 random cards and a Teferi (which is my main wincon and I'm playing two right now). I can imagine many cases in which the opponent sets up a pile with Teferi and one with the rest, pretty much forcing you to pick Teferi. That can't feel good for a 4 mana investment...

But you got to dig 5 deep for that Teferi and once we get to the point where we need a wincon and not answers, that dig can mean all the difference. Personally I'm shaving an esper charm for FoF and a negate out of the main and side for FoN initially. I don't think we want a FoN in the main because negate can only get us so far, but it's a nice early game safety valve and we probably want a second in the side. FoF is a little more interesting because it competes for the instant speed card draw slot that esper charm occupies and charm has so much more utility despite FoF having much more raw power.
I mean, those 4 random cards could be Jace, Snapcaster, and any other 2... plus a Teferi. So what if they put Teferi in a solo pile.
I just wanted to make the point that there might be occasions where we cannot control what pile to pick cuz we are pretty much locked into one or the other. We have to be careful what to bin (and FoF forces you to bin something) cuz we can't get it back.
However I also see its potential (as mentioned above) and its power. I guess it needs some rigor testing.

At the moment I'm WAY more interested in building Mono Blue, but wanted to share an idea. About four years ago, in this topic we were discussing what to do if we had eight Esper Charm. This is basically the card that could let us play istant speed again.
So I'm trying to get back into modern again since I stopped playing quite a while back. I had played this deck but last time I played fatal push had just come out. What is the current stock list for this meta?

Yeah that is a nice one, but at the moment I see it as a 1of in the SB for certain matchups. Nevertheless, the versatility is very cool.

I don't. In fact, I've never really found the sideboard copies to be quite good enough as a 3 mana sorcery.
