Looks like my store is going to attempt to revive modern night. It died in the eldrazi winter, also twin ban killed a bunch of peoples decks. Hopefully with MM17 we can pull some of the newer standard players into modern.
That means I'd better get a deck ready. Now this used to be my back up deck but it appears this is performing much better than my normal modern deck.
So I have spirebluff canal's in my standard deck i can pull out how many should I be running?
I have remand in my other modern deck/cube, how many? what do I replace to slot them in?. just the peer through depths?
This is what I threw together after I flick through this thread.. super annoying I don't have a shattering spree I was going to dig around to see if I could find a smelt or something for a different artifact destruction spell. The dispels are basically blanks but i am not really sure what I want there.
Why are people playing Lightning Bolt in the sideboards? It doesn't deal with Eidolon of Rhetoric.
For me personally, I am going to try out Dismembers in the side. With a creature out, it is a "free" removal spell that deals with any of the various hate dudes and even some bigger things such as Tarmogoyf, Tasigur. Against the infinite mana deck on the draw we can tap out for our creature and surprise them with dismember disrupting their combo (kill druid in response to vizier being cast), which Bolt cannot do.
Lightning bolt, for the most part, is our only play against eidolon of the great revel. It is also a great catch all card against a lot of creature decks.

I'm sorry but the logic is pretty bad here, as there are about 4-5 creatures dismember can kill which bolt cant, and bolt is never really a dead draw since at worst it is 3 damage and 1 storm count. Dismember costs 1 mana AND 4 life which does not mean you can tap out, it can be a dead draw, and it basically says "I scoop" to eidolon of the great revel.
If you have a Goblin Electromancer or Baral in play you can cast it by only paying life, since it will reduce the mandatory colorless mana requirement to 0.
Yes, against Eidolon of the Great Revel it is better to just play Bolt. But against other decks such as Counters Company you will want Dismember instead to interact with the combo. In that matchup, your life total does not matter. It depends which one you think you will see more of.
I'm playing 8 mancer effects. It's quite likely I will hit one by turn 2.
Both Bolt and Dismember have an equal chance of stopping the combo, but dismember can be cast for "0" with a mancer effect while Bolt still cost R. This is the advantage
I've been playing storm for about two weeks now and I am beginning to understand how the deck operates against a live opponent (goldfishing helped me learn the sequencing to some degree, but hasn't really helped my understand the multiple lines you could take). I feel that the peer through depths version is better or at least suits my play style better than merchant scroll. My real problem is sideboarding...I feel that maybe my sideboard is suboptimal and on top of it I feel like I often side out the wrong stuff or sideboard too little. Here is my current sideboard
1x Repeal
1x Negate
1x Shattering Spree
1x Shatterstorm
2x Swan Song
2x Blood Moon
2x Empty the Warrens
2x Anger of the Gods
3x Lightning Bolt
Is this sideboard, against an unknown meta, correct? In addition I also find myself struggling against burn and massive disruption (i.e. Shadow variants)...should I include 3x Leyline of Sanctity?
I am also curious about how to sideboard against burn, Grixis/Jund Shadow and Pure control decks (grixis/UW/etc.) I get the overall gist of the games plans for these matches.
For the shadow matches your prioritize making goblins...but do you also bring in counter magic...how about blood moon on the draw?
For the control deck you build up mana and counter spells then try and go off...but do you also bring in the warrens? Do you try and bait them first and/or play a quick mana dork and try and chip shot them?
For the burn matchup I know that eidolon is key, but do bring in all of the bounce and bolts? Do you try and go off T3? Is leyline good here?
Lastly, what do you all side out in these matches. I tend to side out my remands maybe a gifts or grapeshot and some number of sleight of hands or peer through depths?
I know that I asked a lot of questions and I appreciate any feedback... I am just curious as to what has been working for all of you?.
Your sideboard is solid but there are several key changes I would make. Negate and swan song should come out, replaced by 2 dispel and a lightning bolt. The reason is, although swan song and negate are better against a wider variety of decks, you aren't trying to find cards that you can always bring in, you won't better cards with a narrow focus otherwise you will just end up over side boarding with mediocre answers. Also, this will help against burn, although swan song seems good against burn because it can counter all their stuff, it is terrible. You don't want your counter spell to 2 for 1 yourself, that is bad. And the 4 lightning bolts is def better against a burn meda, guarantees that your likely to have a removal spell for each of their eidelons. Leyline is very bad, even in an ideal meda like yours, don't sideboard it, there are just cards that will be good more consistently against all of those decks. It is a major dilution of your game plan. I like the empty and the affinity hate. Empty is very good against shadow decks. Anger is good to, hits a lot of decks hard. And blood moons are a must have. If you are only gonna sideboard one bounce affect, make it an echoing truth, it is good against lingering souls and you can easily lose to 2 leylines or rest in peaces. Some spicy things you can try; madcap sideboard-it is bad but will guarantee you the burn matchup if you draw it, 1 echoing truth, 1 cyclonic rift, 1 into the roil - it allows you to cast gifts and always get a bounce effect to go off through white sideboard, I highly suggest this against a meda with lots of eldrazi and/or white decks. Also, a tip for the deaths shadow matchup, bring in at least 1 lightning bolt if not more-might seem bad but this is a pretty 50:50 matchup and usually you win with a grape shot for very small. The game winning more might just be-serum visions, lightning bolt, grapeshot.
Hey storm player, been trying some new ideas, let me know what you think-the majority of these were meda calls and not necessarily usually good ideas but I have had success with some.
1. Sideboarding 3 bounce effects - Echoing truth, Into the roil, Cyclonic Rift. I was already siding a repeal and an echo, but I thought I would cough up a third slot and go with these three as hedge against bant eldrazi and other white decks' ex tokens-bant. This allows me to gifts for a win through sideboard like RIP and Cage. I have been seeing a lot more of this sideboard since the new company combo deck spiked and this triple bounce has performed well.
2. Apostle's blessing-this is not my idea, I heard about it from a friend, but it is insane, if you have not tried it you need to. There are situations where this is really bad but they are less common than you would imagine. Allows you to play a turn to mancer without any fear and can really wreck an opponent’s plan of surviving another turn. This card has earned to permanent slots in my mainboard.
3. Damping Matrix. I see lots of tron affinity and lantern, was originally splashing white for wear/tear and stony silence. But seeing as bringing in stony silence and blood moon against tron is just an unnecessary non-bo, I tried this. I thought it would be completely terrible but it turned out to be a decant card. Can still come down turn 2 of a ritual and is also good against cord of calling decks. Helps against some common sideboard cards too: scavenging ooze, relic of progenitus, tormods crypt, nihil spellbomb. Made me happy to anger of gods an elf deck with a burrenton forge tender and a selfless spirit down. All in all not the best card ever unless you face a ton of tron.
4. Moving a bolt or two to the mainboard. I see a lot of burn and this certainly helps with game 1 allowing another eidelon answer. This card is never dead, I see lots of company decks and it is good against any creature deck. Even death's shadow. I can't tell you how many games I have one with the sneaky past in flames, bolt, grape shot against shadow decks that bring them self to 5. Also this opened up more sideboard slots. I had to take out my mainboard empty and one of my peer through depths for this, but I didn't like the empty anyways, was always a terrible draw. The only decks I really see anymore where I don't want to draw bolt are UW control and Tron, but even then lightning bolt has allowed me to get 20 damage through against tron before without any gifts ungiven.
Let me know what you think of these ideas and their performance if you try any of them.
The lightning bolt is actually a pretty neat interaction considering 7 life is usually where shadow likes to be. Do you side in dispels during this matchup too? I feel this is kind of the root of my problem. I want to bring in blood moons counters warrens and a bolt...that's 7 cards! What do I take out?
Also, thoughts on wipe away as a bounce spell? Split second seems really good against spellbombs and relics. For what it's worth I main 1 echoing truth.
@AntoCriv While old version of storm have played transformation sideboard (around theros block) it's even worse with the current iteration of storm because removal (path, bolt, terminate) is actually good against us. The idea of a transformational sideboard is to do something that isn't soft to your opponent's sideboard and I don't think your plan will work well. Plus it's just not that good of a combo. It loses to basically every kind of removal and is really bad against our worst matchups like Jund. It seems pretty good against Bant though. Overall it seems sweet but not that good.
@DTG_UR I think 3 bounce effects is quite reasonable although it is meta dependent. I don't like into the roil but there isn't really anything better unfortunately. I think blessing is cute but it's not been good for me in my testing. I think it's usually going to be just a worse noxious revival and the matchups where it's better are matchups without much removal (company and eldrazi) are already reasonable matchups (although eldrazi can be tough). Damping matrix is fine but it's not topdeckable and shatterstorm is going to be better in most situations. Maindeck bolts are reasonable but I don't like them because without ascension we don't really take advantage of their going face ability much. I'd rather play a maindeck repeal and a merchant scroll because drawing a lot against Jund (not death's shadow) is really bad.
I managed to go 4-0-1 in modern last night getting first place with UR storm.
Round 1: Grixis Control, 2-0
This is a very easy matchup as they don't actually kill us. Both games I managed to cantrip for a couple of turns till I had 4-5 lands in play and then go: electromancer -> ritual -> in response to a bolt/push ritual again -> durdle for a bit -> Empty.
Round 2: Grixis Shadow 2-0
This is a harder matchup but still favorable because of how incredible empty the warrens is. They only play 1 battle rage at most so empty buys us an incredible amount of time. Plus empty of 6-8 is often lethal in one attack.
Game one he tapped out on turn 3 instead of holding up push and died. Game two I emptied for 6 when he was at 5 with a death's shadow and he didn't find anything.
Round 3: Counter Company 2-0
Game one I missed my second land drop and played an electromancer of turn 3. He mainphased a company looking for a fiend hunter and missed and then proceeded to die to the gifts loop. Game two I emptied for 10 on turn 2 (ritual, manamorphose, electromancer, ritual, empty) and was able to bolt one of his combo pieces (vizier) on turn 3 when he went to go off.
Round 4: Bant Eldrzi 2-1
Game one he mulled to six, played a turn 2 TKT into a turn 3 Smasher off of Cavern and I just died without doing anything. Game two was weird. I mulled and kept a hand that could empty for a reasonable amount on turn 3. I emptied on turn 3 but he blew them up so I did it again on turn 4 but he blew those up as well. Luckily for me he hadn't managed to develop a board presence so I was able to fully combo on turn 5. Game three was quite weird. He plays RIP on turn 2 and then I cantrip for a bit. I EOT bounce it and can kill but he has a path so I have to settle for empty. The next turn he has to decide between playing TKT and replaying RIP. Both would have lost him the game since I had another empty in hand and a stocked graveyard but he goes with RIP (which was correct) and eat 26 goblins to the face.
Round 5: ID
My sideboard was:
4x Lightning bolt
2x Echoing Truth
3x Blood Moon
2x Empty the Warrens
2x Dispel
2x Shatterstorm
And my maindeck was: 8 mancers, 3 peer, 2 remand. I'm not sold on the 8th mancer or the peers over some other cantrip combination but I need to do some more testing.
Overall storm feels great and the only matchups that feel actively bad are Burn and Jund Shadow. Bant can be tough but that largely depends on their sideboard. I need to test some more against Company since I suspect that it's not as good as it felt last night. We're a lot softer to scooze than I would like.
Does anyone play this on MTGO, I've been thinking about picking it up online but I don't know how it is to play there. Any thoughts?
@AntoCriv While old version of storm have played transformation sideboard (around theros block) it's even worse with the current iteration of storm because removal (path, bolt, terminate) is actually good against us. The idea of a transformational sideboard is to do something that isn't soft to your opponent's sideboard and I don't think your plan will work well. Plus it's just not that good of a combo. It loses to basically every kind of removal and is really bad against our worst matchups like Jund. It seems pretty good against Bant though. Overall it seems sweet but not that good.
Ok but the opponent will be surprised for this and he will throw his removal always on electromancer/baral
Then what the heck are you cutting? If you don't cut some mancers then the deck will be an unplayable pile of cards that don't work well together. Plus Grixis and Jund have discard and know how to play magic. You're severely overestimating how easy it is to combo off against decks that play more than one removal spell. I agree it's good against Company and Eldrazi but that is not worth out entire sideboard.
Against grixis shadow you don't need to bring in blood moon. Especially if your on the draw. They will just see it in your hand with disruption and then play around it, they really only need one swamp to beat you. I've paid dearly for iversidevoarding it every time against them. And against kind shadow you don't need dispels, it is good but if you are bring in 7 cards than leave it out. Wipe away never served me well, the split second just isn't relevant in enough situations. But it is a mess call. I don't like mainboard echo, but that is just because I play peer through depths over scroll.@You41k
I do not think the sideboard Kiki combo is wise. It gets around sideboard but it seems to be just increasing your sideboard games against decks that you already have good matchups. But seeing as I have not seen this in action I will leave an open mind and try it out. How many of each creature do those who have tried it suggest?

yes, i agree. I do really like the idea of having 4 copies of empty in my 75. what match ups would puzzle be brought in against? assuming control? also dismember seems interesting too. It makes a lot of sense if you run proclaim over anger imo. any insight on these changes would be hugely appreciated!!
I think pieces comes in during control and decks with a lot of discard as it can help you find warrens and a dispel or ritual effect...it also makes it hard for your opp to IoK, Brutality or thoughtseize correctly...if you have some pieces of the combo and a pieces in hand it's rather hard not to take the pieces...if pieces was a serum visions or sleight the choice would be easier.
I personally love the simian spirit guide. If you have a SSG or Past in Flames in hand you can gifts with only 2 mana floating and combo off. Also let's you combo off T2 and play mana dorks on T1 and in rare cases T1 Blood Moon which is pretty sweet.
The mainboard enptys over remand seems like a hedge against shadow decks and with all this week leylines I would guess this list is built for a heavy burn/shadow matchup. Seems like good calls if he got lots of those decks, otherwise those changes seem pretty lose.
Hmm that sideboard is particularly interesting. I mean no blood moon and no echoing truth and minimal bolts.
Hello, sorry for my ignorance, I'm new to storm, but how does this list handle graveyard hate such as RIP, Relic etc, only with Empy the warrens? Thanks!
