Just won a 4 round tournament playing Ad Nauseam. Went 3-1 in the eliminations, only losing 1 round to Bloom Titan (which I could’ve drawn) over the weekend. I played Togores’ list with some changes mainly -1 Gemstone Mine , -1 Dreadship Reef for +1 Slaughter Pact, +1 Boseiju MD. I only wanted to play 20 lands in this deck and I’ve also wanted a MD slaughter pact so I could win through MD creature hate like Spellskite (which mattered in the tournament) or Eidolon. The maindeck Boseiju was to make room in the SB. I’ve also struggled with getting Pentad Prism mana with 2 Dreadship Reef, I was supposed to play the 4th Gemstone Mine in its place but just opted for the Boseiju this time to save sb space. I’ve only been playing this deck for a little over 2 weeks so I can’t say for certain which would be the optimal set-up.
My sideboard needs some work though. For the weekend, I played 4 Leyline of Sanctity, 3 Ethereal Haze, 1 Wear/Tear, 1 Pact of Negation, 1 Patrician’s Scorn, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Laboratory Maniac, 1 Pure Intentions, 2 Thoughtseize. The 1 Pure Intentions was a card against Liliana which was a total beating from previous testing. I’ve also had some issues with Eidolon of the Great Revel and Gaddock Teeg from both Burn and Zoo decks so I tried to play 1 Wear/Tear for Eidolon and Stony Silence (from zoo) and 2 Thoughtseize to try and snag those before they hit play. Seems counter-intuitive because of the lifeloss against the aggressive decks. My line of of thinking was that 2 life is negligible if I could race the opponent after snagging the Hate Cards. Any suggestions on the burn and zoo match-up? Buying time with unlife sometimes isn’t enough especially if they eidolon in play or if they have a critter-heavy hand.
My Rounds are as follows:
R1 Zoo 2-0 WIN
G1: Won with Combo after slaughter pacting a Kird Ape buffed with Ghor-Clan Rampages to buy a turn. Zoo deck had a slow hand fortunately.
SB: -3 Pact -1 Sleight, -1 Prism, -1 Bloom, -1 Boseiju for 4 Leyline fo Sanctity and 3 Ethereal Haze (not sure about this but it seemed to have worked out)
G2: I get a good hand with both unlife and Ad Nauseam. Opponent tapped-out to put me on a 1 turn clock, I won since she won’t be able to Pridemage away my Unlife.
R2 Bloom Titan 1-2 LOSS
G1: Bloom does it’s thing with Pact back-up against my Pact.
SB: -1 Sleight -1 Bloom -1 Prism for +1 Pact, +1 E truth, +1 Lab Man (Not sure if this is correct, feel free to let me know how I should have SB’d)
G2: Bloom had a slow hand but with Leyline of Sanctity on turn 0. I was able to combo-off and go for the Lab Man kill. I also had Pact of his Slaughter Pact.
G3: We didn’t realize that we both took some time the past 2 games so we went to time with him having turn 1. On Turn 4, I spoiled for Angel’s Grace and then went for the combo. I didn’t realize that I was one mana short to kill him so I lose, I should’ve just played grace on his turn to force the draw.
R3: Jund 2-0 WIN
G1: I combo’d off easily as the Jund player had an Aggro Hand with no disruption.
SB: - 4 Pentad Prism, -2 Pact for +4 Leyline, +1 Echoing Truth, +1 Pure Intentions
G2: I keep 2 Leyline of Sanctity and 4 Lands and a Grace. My opponent kept a discard heavy hand with the bad mana. He was able to pulse my Leyline and play a thoughseize the following turn but I was able to Pact it and pay on my turn. I was able to play another Leyline on my next turn. He was able to cast Liliana but I was already able to win on my next turn.
R4: Grixis Delver 2-0 WIN
G1: We both played cautiously but I was able to combo-out in response to a fetch land activation which shut him off of blue for Remand.
SB: -4 Prism, +1 Pact for +1 E truth, 2 Thoughtseize
G2: He started with Delver and seized away another 1, I just kept making land drop and playing cantrips and mana while waiting for Pact Back-up. He Kolaghan’s Commanded a Prism but I was able to recover. With Unlife in play and 0 life, I was able to combo-out with Pact back-up. It helped that his delver on turn 1 didn't flip for 3 turns.
Top 8: BG rock 2-0 WIN
G1: He was able to decimate my hand until I only had Ad Nauseam in hand. With exactly 6 mana after charging a Reef, I top deck an Angel’s Grace for the win.
SB: -4 Pentad Prism, -2 Pact for 4 Leyline, 1 Pure Intentions, 1 Echoing Truth
G2: I didn’t get Leyline on turn 0 but I had grace and Ad Nauseam so I kept. My opponent had a slow start because he had bad mana to start. He got me with discard and was able to blow-up my mana sources with 3 straight Fulminator Mages and an Abrupt Decay on a Lotus Bloom which I had to Echoing Truth. He managed to get Liliana down but I had a lot of dead Leylines in hand to discard while slowly drawing/scrying into mana. He was able to inquisition away my grace at one point but I luckily was able to top deck and play an unlife the following turn. I was able to combo off the turn after.
Top 4: Lantern Control 2-0 WIN
G1: I get a great hand that was disrupted by a surgical extraction on an angel’s grace. After some time of controlling my top deck, I was luckily able to value Ad Naus into an Unlife and then another Ad Nauseam. He had a Spellskite in play that I was able to Slaughter Pact on the way to a lightning storm.
SB: -4 Prism, -1 Pact, -1 Bloom, -1 Sleight for 4 Leyline, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Wear/Tear, 1 Lab Man (Not sure about this as well, any suggestions?)
G2: I get a great hand with both pieces with no Leyline so I keep. Don’t remember much about this game except for an early Pithing Needle on Lightning Storm which I was eventually able to handle and then casting Angel’s Grace in response to an Abrupt Decay on an Unlife after resolving Ad Nauseam or Lightning Storm for lethal.
Finals: Jund 2-0
G1: Ironically, I face off with a teammate in the finals who actually was the one who sold me the deck a few weeks ago. I get a good hand with the combo, some cantrips and 2 land. I think he may have kept an aggro hand as I only remember getting beat down by creatures and not much disruption. I combo off after cantripping into mana.
SB: SB: - 4 Pentad Prism, -2 Pact for +4 Leyline, +1 Echoing Truth, +1 Pure Intentions
G2: This is the game of the night. I remember keeping a hand with the 2 pieces each of both sides of the combo and some lands. Snap keep. I remember cantripping into mana sources and 2 Lotus Blooms and getting hit by discard on an Ad Nauseam, a decay/pulse on an Unlife and then discard again hitting an SSG. I spoils for a grace going down to 2 life and exiling 10 lands and an SSG. I was 1 mana short to kill for the turn because I lost the SSG so I had to pass, he then was able to inquisition my grace. On my turn, I was able to topdeck and cast an Unlife to ensure a combo-off next turn barring a top deck thoughtseize on my Ad Nauseam in hand. He wasn’t able to top deck the seize, instead he played a Kitchen Finks going to 20 life. With 3 land in play, and 10 exiled, I just had enough lands left to deal 17 damage with LS using 2 SSG and 1 land and then a 2nd Lotus Bloom to cast the 2nd LS for exactly 20. My teammate extends the hand but after discussing the matter after the match with some spectators it appears there were some number of plays left that would have result in a win for him. One of which was a bolt on the finks before Ad Nauseam resolved to get him 2 life points away from lethal (missed the 21st land there).
In the end I had a little more luck on my side which lead to the win despite a handful of misplays on my part. The list felt solid despite my arguably subpar card choices. Props to the discussion on this deck in this forum, it helped me get a handle on how to properly pilot this deck despite being relatively new to it. Looking forward to polishing up my play more with your help! Would greatly appreciate your feedback on some things regarding sideboarding as I haven't gotten enough testing with other decks yet. Thanks guys!
Hey Everyone, I am a long time reader of the thread and finally finished my main board today and got to play my first local event tonight with Ad Nauseam. Unfortunately I didnt have a side board so that was a bit of a pain but I managed to finish 3-1.
Round 1 - VS JUND
Knew my opponent was on Jund so I figured it was going to be a rough match especially without a side board.
Game 1 - I keep a great hand with double lotus bloom, ad nauseam and grace. I win on turn 4 without much issue.
Game 2 and 3 - I Mull to 6 both games and keep hands that are not great, he played turn 1 thoughtseize both games into turn 3 Liliana, I have no real way to recover.
0-1
Round 2 - Burn
Figured this will be hard as well without a board.
Game 1 - My opponent has no clue what is going on and I win on T4.
Game 2 - Dig pretty deep for the combo but never find it.
Game 3 - See Game 1.
Games went much better than I expected. Lucky to get 2 clean T4 kills I guess.
1-1
Round 3 - Weird Choke Deck
My opp was playing some weird choke deck with speading seas and root maze.
Game 1 and 2 - I get kept off mana to play the combo for quite a long time but they have no real clock on me and i just win with Pentads and Blooms.
2-1
Round 4 - Melira CoCo
Playing against my best mate so we know each others decks very well.
Game 1 - I keep a pretty solid hand but my opps hand is better, im forced to pact a chord to keep him off going infinite but i cant go off due to having to pay for the pact he has another chord and goes infinite so i scoop.
Game 2 - He plays and early Spellskite but im able to go off T4 with slaughter pact
Game 3 - I keep a great hand of Bloom, Ad Nauseam, Unlife, Sleight, Visions and 2 Land. Its turn 3 and I think im about to kill him next turn when he plays Eidolon of Rhetoric which I thought would be just about game over but i top deck my one of Slaughter Pact, he was not impressed.
3-1 Finish.
All in all had a great time playing the deck and ill be looking to finish the side board hopefully during the week as I have 2 bigger tournaments on the weekend and would absolutely love to be able to play Ad Nauseam at them.
On a side note, Im looking to make my board as strong as possible against Infect, Jund and Affinity. I know these are some of our rougher match ups and any advice anyone could give on side board tools as well as how to approach the match ups would be fantastic.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to hopefully contributing more in the future.
Against jund, anything that draws extra cards is good. Mikoro, center of the sea seems to be the new thing, esper charm is another common one. The BIG one is a playset of leyline of sanctity. Pretty important.
Against infect, besides letting you know that all hope is lost...drown in sorrow, favor of the mighty, darkness, night of souls betrayal.
Affinity, darkness and a disenchant is all I bring in and I just shoot to keep fast hands and be on the play. you may also like hurkyl's recall in some number but I think its overkill.
Against Infect, I've made up a package that is pretty effective and can gain time in order to have a turn 4 kill. So from the sideboard, I bring in : 3 Ethereal Haze, 2 Duress, 1 Echoing Truth, 1 Gigadrowse and 1 Slaughter Pact. I don't want to dedicate spots for a matchup that is so horrible, but they are everywhere in my meta and these sideboard cards are also effective against Infect to slow them down.

Against wt match ups we should side out Pentad Prism? I think that against Kolaghan command decks and with spell snares. Can someone more experienced can say exactly when in when out against tier 1 and tier 2 match ups?
And one more question - what should I side out against Grixis when I want to side in Dromoka? Without Pentad Prism (which I think should be sided out becouse of Kolagans Command) we don't have many options to make green mana. What's your plan?
Any tips on how to battle SaffronOlive's Free Win Red deck he posted the other day? Is it even possible to play against a T1 or T2 Moon unless you resolve double Lotus?
I'm seeing it a bunch in Tournament Practice room on MTGO. And the price movement on Blood Moon, Magus of the Moon, Ensnaring Bridge, and Koth of the Hammer suggest a LOT of people want to try it out, at least online.
The artifacts do help, if you can find them. Leylines after SB are pretty good stallers too, forcing them to pretty much just beatdown with SSG or Magus.

I wouldn't worry about any budget deck posted on Saffronolive's series...

Not budget. Costs double+ what Ad Nauseam does. Blood Moon ain't cheap, and it's going up.
Budget or not is irrelevant, the deck rolls over and dies the second we have any artifact mana. Leyline or Celestial Purge will put this matchup into solid 90/10 territory I think.
I'll be going to an IQ at StarCityGames in Roanoke today with the list I posted before. Last night I played at fnm with it going 3-0 against Grixis Twin, UR Delver, and Jund.
Here's hoping we put another copy in a top 8.

Like I said, if you can find it. Hard to dig when temples don't scry and you can't tap blue for dig.
@ ConfusedCactus : Congrats on the 2nd place. It's great and you had a nice report to read. I'm surprised that Affinity in game 1 didn't do much : it's the deck I'm facing the most and I always find myself in a situation where Inkmoth Nexus is on the field with a Cranial Plating and I'm just on a 1 or 2 turn clock. The first game of the Tron matchup is pretty much what I have in mind when I face this deck : turn 3 Karn Liberated that rips our hand and our field... But the rest of the match was sweet.
@ epdt : I'm going to write something that might upset some, but I think I need to do it. At first, I didn't like Bring to Light as it is a sorcery speed card and to me instant speed is the most amazing thing for Ad Nauseam. But, since we're bouncing back between tier 2 and tiwer 3 since months, we can't establish ourselves as a tier 2 deck consistently. I think our deck has major upsides such as being the most non-interactive and winning at instant speed, so we have great tools. I think it's time to think outside the box maybe and try really different things. Not like trying between Celestial Purge or Duress againt BG/x or Night of Soul's Betrayal or Gut Shot againt Infect : it's been done like since Jarod Boettcher played in Valencia. More like thinking over the whole combo, how to take advantage of it in order to make us an established tier 2 deck at least that doesn't fall out of flavor. Elderfield did it with Spoils of the Vault and it has given us another layer of consistency. I think we're due to something more.
I'm just glad that you're trying to come up with something that has potential and that could be the next thing to make Ad Nauseam even better. Because let's face it : we wreck the field aside BG/x and Infect (Affinity and Infect). But the bad matchups are popular deck, so in a major tournament, when you make day 2 at a GP, you're probably like 7-2 or 8-1, losing to BG/x or some Infect deck. Same thing after day 2 : these are the decks that get there, so when you do to, you face them on day 2 and you end up like 11-4. If you're lucky and dodge them, 12-3 or even 13-2 like Elderfield (who faced Infect, I know, but Van Sciver was just so bad in keeping hands that it wasn't even like Infect...). Keep us posted because I might try it if the results are significant : there are no BG/x in my meta, but Infect and Affinity are everywhere.
@ Blood Moon decks : they're really nothing to us honestly. When I face opponents that know that I'm on Ad Nauseam, sometimes they don't even bother brining in Blood Moon because it's pretty much useless when we have rocks and we have 8 of them, but most of the time, they only have 2-3 Blood Moon.
@ Tournament :
I'll be playing this Monday and the next Monday! List for the events :

The issue I'm having with that particular Blood Moon deck is they run 4 of them main and can get it out as soon as turn 1! That has hosed me when i draw a bunch of temples and blue dig cards.

The issue I'm having with that particular Blood Moon deck is they run 4 of them main and can get it out as soon as turn 1! That has hosed me when i draw a bunch of temples and blue dig cards.
