So I know its been a dead forum for a little while; but....
I have been playing a Fiend Artisan Devotion deck and it is bonkers...I am currently testing and honing it; but I will post it once it is perfected. Here is the starting list:
The sideboard is a work in progress...but the deck can go off as early as turn three (not often though) but is extremely consistent as a turn-4 deck and very resilient (with room for interaction where needed).
You don’t have to play the Tower Scout+Kiki combo in it...I made a version with just Craterhoof, Hornet Queen, etc. and it was great. I am just currently trying out the combo because it only takes two slots (and with 10 mana and 2 dorks; Fiend Artisan becomes a 1-card combo! I don’t know how many games where Craterhoof wouldn’t win where the combo does...but it’s probably a non-zero amount.
Fiend Artisan is fragile and does have to live for a turn; so there are definitely downsides; but the fact that (a) it is only a 2-drop, (b) gets better and larger as the game goes longer, (c) can be untapped/reused with both Kiora’s and Hyrax Tower Scout (or Kiki-) and (c) adds 2-devotion...he works well in the decks “plan” B (just filling up the board and attacking). You don’t have to go too “all in” on it; but it is great when it works out.
____________
I hope everyone else is doing well and trying to do the best under what has been a very difficult period for everyone worldwide. Sending my love to the whole Devotion community!
P.S. has anyone had any more luck with Kenan and Leyline?
I made a deck with both and Karn. It is fast. I like a slightly more “offbeat” deck; but the combination of Kinan and Leyline is definitely Modern-viable.
I've been testing with it quite a bit and have made a list with more creatures (more of a creature toolbox) in the main. It did require me to remove the Abundant Growths (which I'm not real keen on); but it has been great.
There are so many ways to go with the deck...because Fiend Artisan allows you to search for any creature; it opens the deck up to a million possible interactions. I am still working on the best interactions available.
I don’t play Magic anymore, but I’d like to see what decks people come up with using Empath. It’s a little awkward with CoCo since you don’t want many 4+ cc cards in your CoCo deck. Could just have a couple copies to help hit your 2-3 fatties.
It might just function as a replacement to Fauna Shaman, which sometimes saw play in my decks, in like 1 or 2 copies.
LEGACY: Soldier Stompy WW // Blue Stompy UU // Fit Variants BGRW // Sol Land Brews BGRUWC MODERN: Pure Pili-ness GU // Red Devotion RR // Green Devotion Variants GRWUG // U/G Emerge CGU // Lots and Lots of Brews BGRUWC
Totally agree. We may literally Just have enough with Fierce Empath to make a ver straight-forward; but very consistent and powerful devotion deck. I’m brewing now
...not sure if Fiend Artisan works in the deck (as empath provides the smoothing Artisan creates) but I’ll try both.
Really, Fiend Artisan and Fierce Empath work very similarly. They function as the method to "smooth" the deck out (to transition from the "ramp" to the "win" without having to play a deck with a high amount of high-CMC cards.
I don't know if I am at a critical mass point where I can just play Empath, Bellower, Genesis Hydra, etc. and just out-advantage most decks.
We definitely have to test...we are kinda at a point of having too many great options I mean...I'll still take the GG ETB draw a card creature...
I had a Winding Constrictor devotion deck that was good. Mentor is basically the same thing, without the downside of playing against infect, and it allows us to stay away from black which is one of the worst colors for this deck I believe.

Always wear protection kids, sleeve up your deck.

I still haven't seen a deck with Vivien, Monster's Advocate which I feel is a very strong Walker. With Courser and fetchlands you can get some insane value from her passive.

I'm currently playing a 1-of in my creature-Devotion deck. She is unreal. I may go up to 2; but I've been liking it as a singleton.
Genesis Hydra for 10, get both creatures and Dome the opponent for 10 Double the damage of a Walking Ballista.
I tried Warstorm Surge back in the day (I thought I was so smart with the whole timing thing of Surge entering te battlefield BEFORE G. Hydra)...but this is WAY better.
Between this and Fierce Empath...I'll be playing my creature deck more than my Walker Deck...never thought I'd see the day!

I've often looked at including more red in the deck, for stuff like this or Inferno Titan. At what point do we just merge with Ponza and have Gruul Devotion without the land destruction? It seems fun, and Ponza's on the rise atm. I should probably look at joining a Ponza discord, though I'm not a fan of Land destruction.

I like the new Vivien, but at 5 mana I think she comes out too late and does too little. I tend to play a faster aggro-oriented version of devotion, and at that stage of the game I want to be closing the game out instead of grinding advantage. Against a jund-heavy meta, she'd be great.

I agree that at some point we just become a "worse Ponza"...its the same issues we run into with being a "worse Amulet" or a "worse Tron" deck. We are in a VERY tough spot. What can we do better than those decks? We can definitely go bigger. We can utilize planeswalkers better. In some instances we can be faster. We can build our decks to be more resilient (than Tron that is)...but it is definitely a question we have to ask ourselves all the time.
I an SOOO torn. There are just too many ways for us to go with the deck..Just this week I've tried :
1. a Lukka build that essentially exiles 3-drops (the "draw a card" guys) for Emrakul) but can also hard-case Emrakul in many cases.
2. My Cloudstone Curio build
3. A Wakeroot Elemental combo build (great with Fierce Empath but still somewhat hard to develop in a highly interactive meta).
4. My Fiend Artisan / Craterhoof Behemoth build (somewhat straightforward devotion to Craterhoof).
5. A Karn deck with a wish-board.
I don;t know which one is best. The Lukka deck is the fastest goldfish, but the Fiend Artisan version has some more interaction and is smooth; but may he a 1/2 turn too slow....UGH.
As a new player to this deck, what do we look for in upgrades? And are we a poor mans Ponza and/or Poor aggro?
I hadn't seen this. What fun! There is also a Stompy forum on here which may have some great information for you; but I will definitely make sure to look at it more tonight.
I wonder if Winding Way is better than Seek the Wilds...different i know. Just wanted to provide it as an option.
I think in the Stompy version Winding Way is better than Seek the Wild because you can get ALL of the given cards, and since there's so much redundancy there's not as much to lose by dumping them into the grave. In the ramp version its more iffy because you really don't want to dump a Nykthos, Planeswalker, or Craterhoof (Unless you're running a bunch of Eternal Witness). But I like Fierce Empath in the ramp version so I can fetch Primeval or Craterhoof instead of relying on the top 4 of the deck.

I have literally mentioned that card multiple times here wishing for a reprint...such fun synergy with Woodland Bellower, and Company decks.
and we get a new Garruk! Never been more excited for a core set

I like the implications this has for us, and yes, I may need to pick up a woodland bellower now.

What other new cards are good are there to fetch with Bellower and Empath?

crazy good with Doubling Season. We can make a mono-green doubling season deck now

A doubling season deck sounds really greedy...but I really want to build this now.
Also agree that new Garruk is weak.
