just wanna note that i borrowed the cards to play that Goryo's Phoenix deck last evening. easy 4-0. i ran hot with die rolls, muligans, and a few timely draws; but the deck was gas lol. turns out a 7/7 evasive lifelinker with haste is pretty good at winning races against red aggressive decks

I have recently been looking to delve back into modern, and I am an aggro player at heart. I was a diehard merfolk player for a long time, but I am currently opening myself up to look into other decks as well, and UR Phoenix seems like a good contender. I was hoping some of you could answer a few questions for me:
1) Are there any good video primers/matches on YT that I should check out first?
2) Is there a possibility that anything in the deck sees a ban? If so, how hard does that hit the deck?
3) Can this deck translate to legacy? That was always a selling point of merfolk for me; investing in merfolk also invested into the legacy deck as well.
1. Not sure, maybe a VS Series on SCG?
2. Not yet, but we cannot talk about that here really, I'd take it to State of Modern.
3. Yep, LSV played some, and it saw some SCG Team Open play in Legacy.
Hello guys.
Im considering buying into the deck. And the first question I have if there is a way to play a fetchless version of it.
And im thinking if I should wait to buy the phoenixes now or wait for it to drop... I already have 2 of them. Same goes for thing in the ice. I own 2 of them and could borrow another 2 if I wanted to play it somewhere

yeah you can play fetchless, using Shivan Reefs with a full set of spirebluffs + steam vents. pretty much the fetchless storm manabase. i wouldnt consider it as good as a fetch base since you will likely take more self inflicted damage, also you lose access to blood moon out of the side which isnt going to be good in every meta or matchup but is one of the most potent cards when it is. alpine moon would be your alternative.
imo the choice to buy the 2 phoenixes is dependent on how quickly you wanna play the deck. they have peaked in price because the hype wave is still in full swing. they arent going to plummet or anything, but just recognize you are (now) paying a premium to play a archetype/deck that a whole lotta other people want to play as well. for reference ive been watching the price of phoenix (as well as titi, and manamorphose), and they have all stabilized and held steady for a month and a half; so dont worry about missing out because its very unlikely prices go up significantly.

Thank you for your reply. So I guess I'll buy into it, but with small steps due to my budget. And yes I play fetchless storm for quite a while now so having already the playset of manamorphose helps me out a bit. Also the cantrips etc. I'll prox a fetchless list just to see how the deck is going because affording 2 phoenixes and 2 thing in the ice will be expensive enough for the start. I'll still miss 4 fetchlands that I don't own for the list but could actually lend some for tournaments. I like the archetype and I was always a fan of izzet. I'll post the proxed fetchless list once I worked it out.
Hi everyone, I had an idea I'd like to share. I'm a storm player. Usually storm list snow cover islands..which I don't like, because for the last 2 years was never needed, but gives away information. Sometimes I don't have other land to play on turn 2 or 3, and as soon as people see that, will never tap out, and will hold an answer. Is there any disadvantage in playing one or two in ur Phoenix to try to miss guide opponents?
Hey guys, I am thinking of swapping my UR storm deck for this one, I have played Thing in the Ice and Arclight Pheonix in standard (Currently Drakes) so I just have these cards lying around.
I had a lot of trouble playing storm into hate and frustrating people as I fumbled around with gift's ungiven trying to work out the right combo.
I am looking for a proactive but resilient deck to try out.
What decks give you guys the most trouble? I'm looking for a deck that does well vs. Phoenix at the GP. Outside of something like Tron, Martyr Proc, and Burn, what stands the best chance of beating you? Thanks in advance!

Premodern - Trix, RecSur, Enchantress, Reanimator, Elves https://www.facebook.com/groups/PremodernUSA/ Modern - Neobrand, Hogaak Vine, Elves
Standard - Mono Red (6-2 and 5-3 in 2 McQ)
Draft - (I wish I had more time for limited...)
Commander - Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build) (dead format for me)
Damn, I've been testing the Dredge matchup and it seems nearly unwinnable in game 1. Even with the Thing bounce, Dredge can easily reload and be right there where they were the turn before, with only getting burned out being a concern (tough to do with Creeping Chill).

Do you have any surgicals in your mb? Can help to squeak out an edge.
1-2 Surgical Extraction in the main deck, as well as TiTi, are your answers for game 1. And no, they will most likely not be enough, since Dredge is the archetypical Game 1 deck: they are favored to win game 1 against most archetypes, and then have a harder time winning game 2-3 since everyone packs graveyard hate BECAUSE of this deck.

Yes, he posted an article, though it is premium on SCG. It is behind a paywall, but it will be accessible for everyone eventually: http://www.starcitygames.com/articles/38309_How-I-Went-16-0-With-Mono-Red-Phoenix-At-SCG-Baltimore.html
Someone also took another version of mono red Phoenix to a win at GO Toronto PTQ and wrote an article about it. Notably, he replaced Skewer the Critics with Forked Bolt: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-U51SJpjz2qIPuOApmyXJalpxaybfTbsXmHv7Dsv_6g/mobilebasic
