A lot of Elves lists in the top 32. Lavamancer on the rise!
I honestly think Grim Lavamancer has been fine for awhile now. The only reason why I cutted him back then was because everyone was packing 3-4x Collective Brutality MD for a short while (until they notice that outside of reanimation/dredge decks its not that good MD).
Seems like it's at it's worst point ever. Bad against Eldrazi Tron, Death Shadow. Bad against UW control.
Clunky at times because we can get constricted on lands and draw multiples. For now, I'm at 3 copies and running a shard volley instead.
Would love to hear everyone else's thoughts.
I'm not sure I want 4 in the main, but I really want 4 in the 75.
And of every card in my sideboard, it's probably the easiest to justify playing mainboard
Even against Eldrazi & DS, it won't be able to kill most creatures, but it will at least be able to do 3 to face (assuming landfall)
Likewise, while UW doesn't run a lot of creatures, it will still usually have snapcaster & wall of omen (& at some point it's going to start attacking with colonnades or gideons)
As of now, I still think it's worth leaving in the main, but I wouldn't be shocked if the next list to top 8 a big event skimmed on them
Coaxing a block on a GG/SS combined with Searing Blaze can take care of a x/5 creature.

Thank you for reminding me that I need to update my script to track both sideboard hate and maindeck hate. I might as well use this database of Modern decks that I have for something.
GR can also prevent blowouts from Cryptic Command, but I'm guessing it's anti-Storm tech (counter Gifts Ungiven).
Yeah, that player commented on reddit about it. It's apparently for situations against GDS where Bolt+protection kills them, though I'm not sold on that because if Bolt+protection wins then Bolt+Bolt wins. It's also spice to counter Gifts, but I'd rather just kill their graveyard with graveyard hate.

Not convinced either; countering Gifts is about the only case I could come up with in which it won't be equivalent to another damage to the face spell.
In "Old Modern" it was RR, Landfall, Bolt their face and kill their creature.
With Death Shadwo decks and Eldrazi decks, we don't kill as much. So it becomes a lightning strike that requires landfall. Yes, you can get rid of up to 5 toughness creatures with a combination of guide and swift spear. But a lot of times that won't have that situation.
At times, multiples are clunky because we may get bottlenecked on lands and struggle for landfall. That's ok when the card functions as fused fatal push/lightning bolt. Less good when it's a lightning strike.
Against control decks, we have to waot on targets. UW control eats our red sources with spreading seas.
It's still so powerful in the right matchups and typically still castable in the matchups it's not. But it definitely feels less good than before.
2. Gutteral response seems terrible. No point in sideboarding against gifts. We're heavily favored vs storm. Bringing in GY hate, makes it really good for us.
Is Jund Burn actually a thing? I know "bad burn" exists and people have been using black in Burn for Bump for a decent time, and that it is viable. But does anyone ever run 3 colors without running White? I'd imagine Rakdos and Mardu burn are more common variants of Bad Burn.
It's been mentioned, but I don't know of anyone off-hand who is playing it. I don't recall seeing any Jund builds pop up in tournaments, either. The most common builds are RWg, Naya, RW, and Mardu, probably.
So, I ran mono red burn for a month and had some good results online and in person against a wide variety of tier 2 and tier 1 decks. Now that I've switched to Boros Burn, I am having more and more losses it seems. Is it just because i dont have enough fetches or shock lands? Here is my decklist, any help would be great.
You do need more white sources. A typical list plays 15-ish lands that either tap for white or fetch a land that taps for white.
Are you frequently losing because you need white and haven't seen it yet? Beyond that, you should probably up Lava Spikes to 4 and Skullcracks to 4, and take out Path and Magma Jet from the maindeck. Do you feel like there are times you lose because you needed to stop lifegain? That's where the Skullcracks would matter.
How necessary does it seem to have grave hate in the board? I know a number of decks are utilizing the grave between shadow, storm, etc but is it needed?
If we had to rank our worst matchups, what would you say they are outside of soul sisters?
Maybe eldrazi tron or a good scapeshift hand?
I'm on RW at the moment as that was the last time I was able to play, we had all just started back on shattering spree to fight e tron at the time. May have an event coming up and I want to get back in the swing of things. Is shadow still considered "best deck"?
I haven't ran into much problems having a white source, but more so getting killed by a creature who buffs off how much damage their controller has taken or how many creatures are in their graveyard. That is why I had path in the main from now on.

Various kinds of graveyard hate have different merits. You can shut down Gifts decks with it. You can turn off Snapcaster. You can blank Goyfs and stop Delve creatures. You can also interrupt part of CoCo by getting rid of Kitchen Finks, or even turn off Collected Company with Grafdigger's Cage. I think it's worth playing 2-3 in your sideboard.
Soul Sisters is bad. Eldrazi Tron is bad. I think Scapeshift is more or less a race. Jund and Abzan can be built lifegain heavy, and that's bad news for us, but a lifegain heavy build of those decks could weaken them against other decks so you might not see it happen often. Abzan is tougher than Jund because they're naturally bringing more lifegain, though. Ad Nauseam is pretty much unwinnable outside of strange situations. Jeskai Control packs a lot of lifegain and counters to back it up and is pretty tough. D&T can be tough to deal with, too.
I don't know that Modern has a "best deck" akin to the Eldrazi Winter situation last year. There are several decks at the top.

I would definitely fill out your white sources as you can, because 10 is too few and will hurt you from time to time.
You're losing to Grixis Death's Shadow and Abzan/Jund. Those are decks that you'll do better against once you learn how to play against them.
For GDS, you want to try to sandbag burn spells and kill them in one shot when they're low on life. It's OK to pressure them early but be careful once they're at 13 or below. They also play Delve creatures, so graveyard hate can be important against them and you should bring in Path to Exile and Palm from the side as well.
Against Abzan and Jund, you should just be aggressive with creatures early and then play around their discard while chipping away at them. Eidolon is strong here. Try to hold lands in your hand if possible so that you can discard them to Liliana. If you draw an instant as your only card in hand, hold it until their turn to force them to play a discard spell or activate Liliana. If you draw Spike/Rift Bolt, just play it. Path, Palm, and maybe graveyard hate can help against those. Land destruction via Molten Rain can also be interesting against them, since you could lock them out of a color for a little while.
so how important is grave hate currently in the paper meta? been awhile since ive jumped into a tourney and going into one blindly of the meta is something i dont like so im trying to make sure all my bases are covered as well as possible. going through modern t1 and t2, it doesnt seem too big

I'd definitely bring it in against Storm and other Gifts Ungiven decks. I'd consider playing it against GDS, Adbzan/Jund, and CoCo. I might play it against a Snapcaster deck.
There's no Dredge boogieman sitting there, but I don't think Relic/RiP are dead sideboard cards.

my bad. i was in a poor connection area and it double sent
Sideboards are very meta dependent, so it depends on what your meta looks like. Everything in your sideboard looks reasonable. The only one I'm not sure is worth it is the Leyline, since that's really only worth it in a very lifegain heavy meta. If that card is necessary for you, you might consider replacing it with Rampaging Ferocidon in a few weeks, because it's a creature, easier to cast, and very punishing in certain matchups (like Soul Sisters).
