I've been off the grid for a while. Life's kept me off Magic for several sets now. I've played a handful of games with the deck since Skewer came out--actually managed to snag 3 foils from my shop at a Saturday night Modern event.
With Skewer and now the spoil of the canopy lands--I'm really excited for Burn again. A lot of times after playing a lot of games/tournaments, it feels like you're Indiana Jones trying to slide under the Stone door that's coming down to lock you in the temple of doom. You'll either get the last point this turn or be locked in forever. And it becomes not fun. After a rest, it's nice to get back at it.
In regards to Tron. I played against it twice in a league yesterday. I won 3/6 games. I don't think they've gotten any new tools to assemble Tron. But seemed like 5/6 games they had turn 3 tron. Karn the creator into Lattice is really powerful. But if they play Karn and minus him right away--any bolt spell to his face kills him and now your lands do things.
I played against UR Wizards and drew 4 lands in a row after having 3 in my opener. That Sunbaked Canyon is going to help.
In regards to Phoenix decks--what are you doing as far as GY hate? I've got RIP and Relic. I worry that RIP may be too slow at times. With Phoenix being a thing at the level that it is--I almost think Grafdigger's Cage is the answer. And maybe even Surgical extraction. Hitting their phoenix, hitting Prized Amalgam, it can be a powerful play.
In regards to phoenix decks I have had some success with running a couple faerie macabre. They never expect it especially after they pitched two birds to the grave.
Evidently mtgsalvation will enter read only mode on July 8th. Some folks are working on a replacement. The primer here will still exist, but no new posts and it can't be edited.
I don't know what I'll do, whether I'll make an account on the new site and copy everything over, make an account to still comment while someone else maintains the primer there, or just post on /r/LavaSpike (same user name).
Suggestions? My gut feeling is that traffic here has fallen significantly over time. I don't know if that's the twitch login thing, me being an ******** (I've tried toning it down over time), forums in general losing traffic to social media, or some combination of it all. I'm not sure the replacement will have more activity than we see here.
Discord probably wouldn't be bad to give a whirl, if we can get everyone onto a unified one. That said I personally will be moving with the forum, /r lavaspike is cool but for the most part the people there have very little idea what they are talking about and I feel like Reddit doesn't keep the historical information up well enough.
Grafdigger's Cage might also be good to play if Neoform starts making a big splash. I've never played Faerie Macabre in Modern, but I've played it in the side for Legacy Burn and LED Dredge. It's a strong card, though I was playing it because I didn't have Leylines. In these situations, it's kind of a budget Surgical that could take two different cards in some spots.
As far as Discord, I don't really have the time for it (honestly, I haven't had a lot of time to play Modern lately). I'm also leaning towards migrating to the new forum, since that would allow me to probably keep posting the monthly data dump in the cleanest way. At least LavaSpike is a step up from facebook. I spent a few weeks in the facebook Burn board and got tired of seeing literally every new red card get posted there along with "what about this in Burn?"

That happens on a lot of the forums here too lol, although less so with burn I guess since it's looking at very specific cards
me being an ******** (I've tried toning it down over time)
Just to hit this real quick, we definitely didn't get along well at all it seemed early on, but I would agree you have toned some things down and while there are still plenty of times we don't agree on things, things are way better than before
That said, I don't think that reddit is a good solution for things like primers. My vote would be keep it going on whatever new replacement they come up with, but yeah. You can't avoid the stupid people anywhere you go. I'm one of the mods in the Masters of Modern FB group and while most of the time it's fine, sometimes there are definitely folks who will get under your skin. Keep doing what you're doing man, the Burn primer is one of the best ones out here and it's a sad thing that this place is being written off.

Thanks for the kind words. I've certainly tried to be less abrasive. I'll keep working on it.
We have a new potential sideboard card: Magmatic Sinkhole is a potential mono-red replacement for Path to Exile. It doesn't answer Kitchen Finks in the same way as path, and it's not a good early answer, but it can get rid of most things by t3 or t4, and it can kill a lot of planeswalkers if you have it in time.

Yeah someone in a FB group was pissed it can't target players and I was just like..uhm do you really think they want Burn having a spell that says "tap R, Lava Axe you"? It's like the folks who were bucking for us to get Price of Progress in this set, I mean really? If the goal is to destroy the openness of the format then sure, print away.
Delve Bolt for 2R or 3R would probably be appropriate, but an easy 5 damage to the face for R is kind of ridiculous. That said, I think Gurmag Angler is almost as ridiculous. I think Delve is a mistake in general.
PoP was made worse by a faked leak claiming that it was in the set, but it was an obvious fake if you looked at it closely.
This deck is gas. It's like 82% to keep an opener and 44% to steamroll (cast 7-8 spells by turn 4 on the play). GM, Rift, Seal, and critters help with the Spectacle cards. All 1-mana spells so LUTS is just Divination unless you're stuck on 1 and don't draw a single land in either of its cards or your next draw step. If you don't want to mess with LUTS, just swap them for Street Wraith and the idea's basically the same. GM gets a little better, but variance goes up too.
I haven't played in a few years, so SB is definitely a WIP. Could be 4 Thoughtseize, 4 Collective Brutality, 3 Searing Blaze, 4 Surgical Extraction or something. I kinda' just ignore Chalice and Leyline since it's hard to deal with them and they're not very popular. If Leyline's around, grab green. If Chalice is popular, throw in some Smash to Smithereens! I'm sure Grim should be here somewhere, but I just threw the list together haha.
You can find my April data dump a couple pages back (I'll edit this with the link later). Leyline isn't a problem these days. Stats for chalice are on there too.
Also doesn't deal with wurmcoil either. smiting helix tease... I saw the name and then the 4 cmc made me cry. Flashback is nice but yeah... They rly hate burn apparently. We didn't rly get much and they made a lot of hate cards against us
Yeah, that deck looks super sweet. Have a sb? I imagine you'd need some out to Chalice of the Void. Really like some of the spicy tech cards (GM).
It's not any good. First, sixteen lands and shard volley is bad. Seal of Fire is a terrible burn card. I'm willing to bet that deck was goldfished and never played against any actual opponents. BR burn is a pet project that has virtually no high-level results, and there is a good reason for that. It isn't as good as standard Boros.
See I have no problem with being an ********, that's why I'm kinda glad this forum is going away. Censorship, politics, the people behind the scenes are just the worst about these sorta things.
I played at least 30 games and the win rate was positive. Small sample size, but it's not untested. 16 lands seems stupidly low, but I ran the numbers blindly before I put the deck together, and 16 lands gives you the best chance of steamrolling. Shard Volley is fine. Seal of Fire is bad, but it's the best shock we have, especially with all of the Spectacle cards. Try it.
I'm worried about Burn's ability to keep up with the modern decks of today. We're always going to be represented because of our reputation and low financial barrier to entry. But our performance has been suffering for awhile now. I expected something in Horizons to help us out, but we didn't really get anything. The new land is great but not exactly enough. Meanwhile a bunch of other decks got new tools, not to mention any breakout decks that may come from the set. Decks these days are fast and resilient, and don't harm themselves through their manabases as much as they used to. If the London Mulligan goes into effect, I think it'll be another nail in us. Burn won't drop off by any means, but it's getting harder for me to consider it a pillar of Modern when talking solely about performance.
