It's interesting to see that LUtS hasn't performed at the same level that non-LUtS has (though the sample size is small). I'm adamant that it is not good enough and will just be a flash in the pan.
It's also true that it's hard to make any comparisons with Skewer and non-Skewer when most players are onboard with Skewer.
In other news, my hard drive survived the flood, so I'll get a new burn hate analysis up soon. I'll also see what I can glean from what burn builds are being played and in what fractions.
Yeah, I tend to agree. I don't think that it's a revolutionary card of any kind. In addition to several hundred matches of Burn since the printing of Spectacle cards, including more than 50 with RB + LUtS, I'm taking this GP's data as another data point that supports the opinion I have of LUtS. It's just another Lightning Strike with upside, and not clearly better than other Lightning Strike+ cards that see play like Boros Charm, Lightning Helix, and Skullcrack.
Skewer seems to be fairly universally acceptable. I haven't seen very many people oppose it, with the exception of that Modern Nexus article, which didn't really make any compelling arguments, IMO.
What do we think of adding Kor Firewalker to the side? With the rise in popularity of Mono Red Phoenix and the consistent high prevalence of Burn, maybe it’s better now than ever. I was of the opinion that it isn't worth it just as a mirror breaker, but I think it's reasonable to do because it's not just for one deck anymore. It depends on whether you're willing to remove other things to make room for it, but I'd consider finding room.

Personally I think Path/Searing/Graveyard hate is plenty against Phoenix. I've only played against it a few times but the deck seems fairly fragile. Classic Burn is stronger and more resilient in my opinion.
It may have been discussed before, but is Surgical Extraction a reasonable play against Dredge/Bridge decks? Also, I feel that Lightning Helix is the correct cut from RW for Skewer.

Yeah, this seems like a very problematic mulligan rule for modern and legacy in general. It could potentially completely shut down Burn and graveyard strategy decks. It will also make Chalice more consistent. I really can't see it sticking as a rule in Modern. However, on the plus side, it might encourage more interactive decks to make a comeback - let's go Temur Delver!.

I think there's two sides to this coin. First is positive in that our decks are really redundant and streamlined. A pseudo scry 7 and taking our choice of n-x spells for our game plan is pretty rewarding for us. In this sense, it allows us to cherry pick our tempo.
The flip side is it does the same for all other decks and absolutely puts us behind the eight ball with chalice and leylines. Unless these cards pop up in multiple main decks then we should be ok. Red already had the best answers for artifact hate.
Degenerate combos will move us to black to thought seize and inquisition of kozilek to rip hands apart. More leylines enchantments push us to splash more green and white. The point being, I think burn has lots of flexibility and our side boards will adjust accordingly if this new rule sticks. By no means am I saying it's easy though.
I agree this is definitely a two edged sword for a lot of decks, graveyard strategies included.
I've done very well against Dredge with Burn (and every Dredge player is quick to remind me that they feel they are favored). I think Skullcrack is absolutely a necessary card, and would rather cut something else for Skewer. When I have Skullcrack against Dredge, I feel like I have a hate card in my hand. I like Surgical over Rest in Peace; I hate tapping out for something that doesn't do damage, and sometimes, tapping out to play Rest in Peace feels kind of bad. If you decide to play Rest in Peace on your second turn, they blow it up and have one mana left to get the engine re-started. It feels like a waste. If you play it later than turn 2 it might be too late anyway. I use a combination of Ravenous Trap or Tormod's Crypt, too, but only because I don't want to spend money on Surgical. Surgical is better, although two life is a real cost in this match.
I took a more balanced approach when removing cards for Skewer. In my main deck I run 3 each of Searing Blaze, Helix, and Skullcrack, with no Grim Lavamancer. My meta has a lot of Dredge, Burn, and Midrange decks (with a sprinkle of Phoenix decks). I don't like Grim in my meta, and I don't want to have less than 3 Skullcracks or Helixes, so my build works for me (I've had my hand ripped apart often enough to have nightmares about drawing Searing Blaze or Grim with my opponent at 3). Take my opinions with a grain of salt, because I'm comfortable with the way I play my deck in my meta.
I don't think there's much reason to be doom and gloom about the mulligan test. I don't think the new mulligan will actually stick. I think it does bad things for Modern and Legacy, even if it's good for limited and standard.
January 2019 opposing hate analysis
The following is a lot of data that's tough to digest, but it might be helpful to you to know what kind of lifegain to expect at various times, what counterspells people are playing, and what discard spells people are playing. This analysis comes from MTGGoldfish data with some cleaning procedure applied to it to try to clean up any bad deck names. I then go through these deck lists and find instances of "counter target", "lifelink", and "gain N life"/"gains N life" in the card text. On top of that, I search for Leyline of Sanctity, Oketra's Last Mercy, Chalice of the Void, Phyrexian Unlife, and Spellskite. The deck population is 576 decks. Cards that show up less than 0.5% of the time are not printed, and I've also removed some cards that don't affect us like Disdainful Stroke and Ceremonious Rejection. I cannot express in words how much I hate the concept of emblems because they cannot be interacted with in any way at all. That kind of stuff just shouldn't exist.

I agree with you 100%. There still hasn't been a rule or card that allows any kind of interactions with emblems. I have a hunch that even if they made a card to interact with emblems it probably will be too narrow to be played anyways.

Wanderer already kind of makes that deck somewhat annoying to play against. I could also see them switch a couple of cards to add Judges Familiar to the deck to help support her.

Turn 5 anthem is tough. Let's hope we get toys that equally scare people. I'm really hoping we get Price of Progress

Sorry yes you're right. I did mean turn 5 ultimate in my post and not anthem. I'm imagining a deck running both Serra and worship and then hiding behind indestructible creatures and fogs. Wincon is your opponent flipping the table.
Sulfuric vortex would be spicy to get. I'm excited to see what's coming.
It's also true that it's hard to make any comparisons with Skewer and non-Skewer when most players are onboard with Skewer.
In other news, my hard drive survived the flood, so I'll get a new burn hate analysis up soon. I'll also see what I can glean from what burn builds are being played and in what fractions.
Skewer seems to be fairly universally acceptable. I haven't seen very many people oppose it, with the exception of that Modern Nexus article, which didn't really make any compelling arguments, IMO.
Personally I think Path/Searing/Graveyard hate is plenty against Phoenix. I've only played against it a few times but the deck seems fairly fragile. Classic Burn is stronger and more resilient in my opinion.
It may have been discussed before, but is Surgical Extraction a reasonable play against Dredge/Bridge decks? Also, I feel that Lightning Helix is the correct cut from RW for Skewer.
Maybe go naya again with more creatures?
For Mythic Championship II in London, we're going to be trying out a new mulligan rule that we have been playtesting internally for some time. We believe the new rule smooths out opening hand decisions even more, though it certainly has some implications for formats like Modern.
The rule we'll be testing in London is as such: When you mulligan for the Nth time, you draw seven cards, then put N cards on the bottom of your library in any order.
So, for example, let's say you're taking your second mulligan of a game, what we often call a mulligan to five. You would draw seven cards, select two, and place those two on the bottom of your library in any order. Then you would decide whether to keep or mulligan again.

Burn, being low-variance, is definitely among the decks that benefit least from this proposed rule. However, Burn still has plenty of creatures and access to enchantment hate if necessary. I think graveyard-based decks are much more likely to get hated out by Leylines than Burn.
I think there's two sides to this coin. First is positive in that our decks are really redundant and streamlined. A pseudo scry 7 and taking our choice of n-x spells for our game plan is pretty rewarding for us. In this sense, it allows us to cherry pick our tempo.
The flip side is it does the same for all other decks and absolutely puts us behind the eight ball with chalice and leylines. Unless these cards pop up in multiple main decks then we should be ok. Red already had the best answers for artifact hate.
Degenerate combos will move us to black to thought seize and inquisition of kozilek to rip hands apart. More leylines enchantments push us to splash more green and white. The point being, I think burn has lots of flexibility and our side boards will adjust accordingly if this new rule sticks. By no means am I saying it's easy though.
I agree this is definitely a two edged sword for a lot of decks, graveyard strategies included.
I've done very well against Dredge with Burn (and every Dredge player is quick to remind me that they feel they are favored). I think Skullcrack is absolutely a necessary card, and would rather cut something else for Skewer. When I have Skullcrack against Dredge, I feel like I have a hate card in my hand. I like Surgical over Rest in Peace; I hate tapping out for something that doesn't do damage, and sometimes, tapping out to play Rest in Peace feels kind of bad. If you decide to play Rest in Peace on your second turn, they blow it up and have one mana left to get the engine re-started. It feels like a waste. If you play it later than turn 2 it might be too late anyway. I use a combination of Ravenous Trap or Tormod's Crypt, too, but only because I don't want to spend money on Surgical. Surgical is better, although two life is a real cost in this match.
I took a more balanced approach when removing cards for Skewer. In my main deck I run 3 each of Searing Blaze, Helix, and Skullcrack, with no Grim Lavamancer. My meta has a lot of Dredge, Burn, and Midrange decks (with a sprinkle of Phoenix decks). I don't like Grim in my meta, and I don't want to have less than 3 Skullcracks or Helixes, so my build works for me (I've had my hand ripped apart often enough to have nightmares about drawing Searing Blaze or Grim with my opponent at 3). Take my opinions with a grain of salt, because I'm comfortable with the way I play my deck in my meta.
The following is a lot of data that's tough to digest, but it might be helpful to you to know what kind of lifegain to expect at various times, what counterspells people are playing, and what discard spells people are playing. This analysis comes from MTGGoldfish data with some cleaning procedure applied to it to try to clean up any bad deck names. I then go through these deck lists and find instances of "counter target", "lifelink", and "gain N life"/"gains N life" in the card text. On top of that, I search for Leyline of Sanctity, Oketra's Last Mercy, Chalice of the Void, Phyrexian Unlife, and Spellskite. The deck population is 576 decks. Cards that show up less than 0.5% of the time are not printed, and I've also removed some cards that don't affect us like Disdainful Stroke and Ceremonious Rejection.

I agree with you 100%. There still hasn't been a rule or card that allows any kind of interactions with emblems. I have a hunch that even if they made a card to interact with emblems it probably will be too narrow to be played anyways.
I think Serra is super strong though because she anthems then she ults the next turn. Bump in the Night got a raise in importance just from her being announced. Wanderer already kind of makes that deck somewhat annoying to play against. I could also see them switch a couple of cards to add Judges Familiar to the deck to help support her.
Turn 5 anthem is tough. Let's hope we get toys that equally scare people. I'm really hoping we get Price of Progress
The best card we could get is probably Sulfuric Vortex but doubtful that they would print it. Fireblast, and Price are super strong too but, Sulfuric Vortex answers almost all the problem cards we deal with (Leyline and life gain).
Sorry yes you're right. I did mean turn 5 ultimate in my post and not anthem. I'm imagining a deck running both Serra and worship and then hiding behind indestructible creatures and fogs. Wincon is your opponent flipping the table.
Sulfuric vortex would be spicy to get. I'm excited to see what's coming.
