hey all, so with the recent spoiler for Skewer the Critics, my interest in burn has piqued.
I decided to throw together mono red because i've never personally been a huge fan of the white cards and the semi painful mana base that comes along with it.
anyways here's the decklist:
I feel keldon marauders is good enough to be played, but im not yet sure if it's worth playing 4 since its so high variance, sometimes dealing 5, other times only 2 but it eats a blocker or removal.
I've also thought about cards like a 2x mutavault for a way to help finish games.
I'm somewhat new to this deck so some constructive criticism would be useful.

ARGHH!!! We are this close to having an actually playable mono-red list it's not even funny! Like, the first 56 or so cards write themselves, but I just can't figure out what else to play without splashing any color(s).
I really didn't think another set of pseudo-bolts would give me such a pitiful deckbuilder's crisis...
Are we really doomed to splash white for Boros charm (and several other relevant sideboard cards) and/or black for Bump in the night for eternity?
It is painful how real this almost is. I want it so bad.
I think the best that we can do to fill out those last 4 slots is 2 Shard Volley and (Shudders) 2 Lightning Strike. The argument for Lightning Strike is that if you are playing a mono-red deck where you aren't taking damage from your shocklands, then Lightning Strike looks a little bit like Lightning Helix if you squint your eyes just right. Ultimately though, I think that if I'm having to put copies of Lightning Strike in my Modern Burn deck just to make it work then something has gone horribly wrong.
What about a few Gut Shot to round out the mono red list? It was suggested in a linked list a few pages back as a card to help with explosive openings involving Swiftspear and Skewer the Critics. It’s weak in burn overall, but does seem to provide unexpected power. Outside of mono red there are better options.
I've always ran eight fetches in my mardu burn and I've never once had mental issues outside of not seeing enough land or seeing too much but as far as getting my colors 8 fetches has been fine personally
Do you think it is worth playing a real 3 colour deck to be slightly more explosive at the cost of a more painful manabase? Or is RW still optimal because it is less painful?
I really like the idea of playing Bump & Boros Charm but when I just looked up colour requirements playing three colours has a real cost. Like you said 10 fetches minimum and the likelihood of fetch+shocking twice per match to reliably cast spells.
I used to run Naya with Atarka's Command and without Nacatl, but that was before you the fast aggro decks that exist now. I'd be worried about taking that much self damage these days. If Bump in the Night makes burn fast enough that it doesn't matter, then I'd probably do it.

Still, budget red deck will get a significant boost from the printing of Skewer the critics. Until we get some better thing(s) to fully go mono red competitively, I will probably splash green for enchantment removal (Because my hatred for Leyline of sanctity is eternal). Closest to monored I'll get for now is probably something like this:
Phew. It's been a while since I made a sideboard without white or black cards...we're kinda low on interesting options in red/colorless, especially when skullcrack is already in the main. And while green offers Destructive revelry and atarka's command, it really doesn't offer much more.

I see where you're coming from and I also saw that list (thread's been very busy had a lot of catching up reading to do), but gosh... even in the good scenarios that's just 2 damage for a card. Granted with no mana, but still every other scenario it's just one damage. I don't thinke we'll run into a lot of scenario where we just can't cast Skewer the critics.
For what it's worth, with 5 of any card you get just over a 50% chance to see it on turn two. That's why I try to run 5 of each sideboard role as much as possible. With that in mind, a single Searing Blood in mono red would likely be a fine addition.
This is awesome discussion everyone. After some soul searching, I agree with Elconquistator that we need a version of flame rift to make mono red viable.
That 2cmc 4 damage is important. Petition to make Price of Progress Modern legal right? Catparty, I did see that post about Gut Shot a few pages back but agree with MisterMuffin21 it's still 1 or 2 damage a card.
MisterMuffin21, interesting to go Gruul, but what about this counter Proposal? **Everyone please excuse the text paste, I'm new and don't know how to update my deck with hyperlinks.
Atarka's Command is a skullcrack and pseudo Boros Charm in 1 assuming a single creature hits. Add the new Collision//Colossus. The Collision half is rarely relevant, but would see use versus flyers. The Colossus part is instant speed and pumps attack and defense with trample. Ghor-Clan Rampager pumps defense more but it's an activated ability that does not trigger Swiftspear prowess (this card turns swifty into 6/4 trample turn 3). I think this might actually make us more explosive than the Rakdos alternative with Bump. Maybe Mutagenic Growth is also an option here but for less damage.
Keeping 2 Sacred Foundry in the main let's us access white in the board. Some of us are already running 1 or 2 Stomping Ground in Boros for access to Revelry. I play lots of Merfolk in my meta and can't stand Spreading Seas shutting my sideboard off with only 1 fetch splash so that's a call for you in your local.
I want to focus on Collision // Colossus and your general comment on pump spells for a sec. Pump spell are not burn spell and have unfortunately no place in burn unless some burn effect is attached to it (See Atarka's command). We need way more creature than 12/14 creatures for a pump spell to be even decent, let alone in burn. The potential +4 damage on a creature swing is unfortunately offset by it's dependence on the presence of said creature which makes the card worhtless by itself, unlike AC that can still do 3 damage on its own with the potential for more. And there's also removal to account for.
We could get the creature count up, but then we become more akin to a zoo deck, and it's not really the place to talk about this. (don't think zoo want that either, which would mean an even bigger no in burn.) Pump spell has always been more of a thing for infect. The explosive potential is there, but removal is a little too prevalent, and we just don't run enough creature to make pump spells worthwhile in burn.
EDIT: Oh, and while we're at it, if you run white mana, you run Boros Charm. No questions.

I can agree with all points you're making. I should point out that I do not see pump spells as an optimal build for us. I'm begrudgingly accepting of the fact that we are no longer the fast deck on the block and more often than not lately are playing a control game and waiting for our moment to squeak in that last bit of damage. The suggestion was most certainly a grasp for that speedy explosiveness but you're right, with so much removal and so little creatures in our deck, it's dangerous.
Running 4 searing blaze with 6 fetches seems terrible (Oh I see the other list has 12) I run 9 (instead of the usual 10 because I am too cheap to buy another arid mesa or scalding tarn) and I get blaze stuck in hand.
Once you run fetches you are priced into splashing - even if just for s/b. If you insist on mono-R you could run 2 risk factor 2 shard volley. Or Fiery Temper/Faithless Looting. I think you would want another discard outlet though.
December 2018 opposing hate analysis
The following is a lot of data that's tough to digest, but it might be helpful to you to know what kind of lifegain to expect at various times, what counterspells people are playing, and what discard spells people are playing. This analysis comes from MTGGoldfish data with some cleaning procedure applied to it to try to clean up any bad deck names. I then go through these deck lists and find instances of "counter target", "lifelink", and "gain N life"/"gains N life" in the card text. On top of that, I search for Leyline of Sanctity, Oketra's Last Mercy, Chalice of the Void, Phyrexian Unlife, and Spellskite. The deck population is 968 decks. Cards that show up less than 0.5% of the time are not printed, and I've also removed some cards that don't affect us like Disdainful Stroke and Ceremonious Rejection. Per card splits: Go here if you want to find a list of what decks play specific cards.

Maindeck: The top cards are Search for Azcanta (5.79%), Eidolon of the Great Revel (4.24%), Blood Moon (4.03%), Detention Sphere (3.51%), Hardened Scales (3.20%), Rancor (2.17%), Daybreak Coronet (1.55%).
Sideboard: The top cards are Rest in Peace (20.56%), Stony Silence (19.21%), Leyline of the Void (14.26%), Alpine Moon (6.40%), Worship (5.37%), Blood Moon (4.86%), Ghirapur Aether Grid (3.72%).
The first column is the average copies per deck of this archetype if the deck plays this card, so that this number is not affected by a deck that doesn't play the card. The second column is the fraction of decks of this archetype playing this card, and this number is affected by decks that don't play the card.
I've played 36 games since adding 4 Skewer the Critics. I've tried to log what happened when I saw them. Here's the casting turn:

Here's the count of ways I triggered it (or didn't):

Boros Charm - 4
Eidolon Trigger - 1
Fetch - 1
Goblin Guide - 3
Lava Spike - 2
Lightning Bolt - 2
Not cast - 3
Rift Bolt - 11
So, I was frequently dropping one on T2 or T3, and Rift Bolt is the most common enabler card (probably surprises no one). I cast it for R about 80% of the time that I had one in hand.
Of the times that I didn't cast it, two of them were in the same game when I was stuck on a 1 lander (kept a Bolt, Rift x2, Skewer x2 hand, and it didn't get there, and I had drawn a third Skewer). The other was one that I drew late and had 4 lands in play and needed to hold up a Skullcrack, and this was the only truly awkward time I had it in hand, but I think I would have lost the game even if it was just a Lava Spike instead. The 3CMC situations were both cases when I had enough lands in play, nothing else in hand, and just fired it off. I never really felt bad holding multiples early, because I could pace them out, but I wouldn't want to have multiples late. You definitely want to prioritize getting them out of your hand when you can. There was a game where I had Rift+Skewer+Skewer in one turn, and Skewer got me a T3 win in another off of Swiftspear+Rift+BCharm. I'll keep adding more data as I find time. If anyone else has a list of their testing with turn, cost, and enabler, I can add that in too.
I believe I made a mistake with it when I had a Guide, Swift, and 1 land out. I was holding out for another land and hoping I could squeeze a Prowess trigger out. I should have fired it off second main, just like I would have done with just a Guide. I won't make that mistake going forward.
The fetch that enabled it was a T2 where I swung with 2 guides, they fetched to path one, pushed the other, and the fetch got me Skewer. The Eidolon trigger was because I swung with an Eidolon and they bolted it.

Hi, what's your decklist like for the test? What gets replaced?
@elconquistador, thanks for your feedback, that's very helpful
@Boonty, yes im playing a stomping ground for cindervines/destructive revelry. Here is the list (for now) that i will bring at GP toronto
So, Just toying with an idea.... What do you guys think about spike jester in straight rakdos burn? 2 drop 3/1 goblin with haste seems ok and on top of that, would 8 goblins open the idea of goblin grenade?
I am currently on a similar version, it feels great.
What do you think of the integration of a Stomping Ground to have access to Cindervines ?
I'm not sold on Cindervines. I think it's quite bad as enchantment/artifact hate because of how slow it is and the first section would have to prove itself very strong in order for me to add green and play it. For now, I'm staying on Smash to Smithereens, because I don't think enchantment hate is important right now.

What would you remove in order to play Spike Jester? A 2cmc haste is a lot worse than a 1cmc haste. 8 goblins wouldn't open up Goblin Grenade, either.
I decided to throw together mono red because i've never personally been a huge fan of the white cards and the semi painful mana base that comes along with it.
anyways here's the decklist:
4 Bloodstained Mire
13 Mountain
2 Scalding Tarn
Spells
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Searing Blaze
1 Shard Volley
4 Skullcrack
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Skewer the Critics
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
2 Grim Lavamancer
2 Keldon Marauders
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Grafdigger's Cage
3 Searing Blood
4 Shrine of Burning Rage
4 Smash to Smithereens
I feel keldon marauders is good enough to be played, but im not yet sure if it's worth playing 4 since its so high variance, sometimes dealing 5, other times only 2 but it eats a blocker or removal.
I've also thought about cards like a 2x mutavault for a way to help finish games.
I'm somewhat new to this deck so some constructive criticism would be useful.
Pauper: UdelverUthey slaughtered my deck i miss gush and daze..Turn 6 Karn > Turn 2 Phage

I used to run Naya with Atarka's Command and without Nacatl, but that was before you the fast aggro decks that exist now. I'd be worried about taking that much self damage these days. If Bump in the Night makes burn fast enough that it doesn't matter, then I'd probably do it.

(W/B)BW Tokens(W/B) | (B/R)Rakdos Burn(B/R) | (U/R)Gift Storm(U/R)
I can agree with all points you're making. I should point out that I do not see pump spells as an optimal build for us. I'm begrudgingly accepting of the fact that we are no longer the fast deck on the block and more often than not lately are playing a control game and waiting for our moment to squeak in that last bit of damage. The suggestion was most certainly a grasp for that speedy explosiveness but you're right, with so much removal and so little creatures in our deck, it's dangerous.
Once you run fetches you are priced into splashing - even if just for s/b. If you insist on mono-R you could run 2 risk factor 2 shard volley. Or Fiery Temper/Faithless Looting. I think you would want another discard outlet though.

The first column is the average copies per deck of this archetype if the deck plays this card, so that this number is not affected by a deck that doesn't play the card. The second column is the fraction of decks of this archetype playing this card, and this number is affected by decks that don't play the card.
This is just a core dump of the fraction of decks out of the total for this month with each name.

Link to previous month: November 2018 (apologies if it goes to the wrong spot on the page, it's post 1764).
I've played 36 games since adding 4 Skewer the Critics. I've tried to log what happened when I saw them. Here's the casting turn:
Here's the count of ways I triggered it (or didn't):

What do you think of the integration of a Stomping Ground to have access to Cindervines ?
@Boonty, yes im playing a stomping ground for cindervines/destructive revelry. Here is the list (for now) that i will bring at GP toronto
Here is my list : (i dont know how to do it in the table)
2arid mesa
2sacred foundry
2mountain
1stomping groun
4inspiring vantage
4wooded foothills
4bloodstained mire
4goblin guide
4monastery swiftspear
4eidolon of the great revel
1grim lavamencer
4lightning bolt
4lava spike
4rift bolt
3skewer the critics
4boros charm
3skullcrack
3lightning helix
3searing blaze
Sideboard :
2kor firewalker
2path to exile
3rest in peace
4cindervines (still to test... i can understand some arguments of destructive revelry being faster)
2deflecing palm
1searing blaze
1lightning helix
I'm not sold on Cindervines. I think it's quite bad as enchantment/artifact hate because of how slow it is and the first section would have to prove itself very strong in order for me to add green and play it. For now, I'm staying on Smash to Smithereens, because I don't think enchantment hate is important right now.
What would you remove in order to play Spike Jester? A 2cmc haste is a lot worse than a 1cmc haste. 8 goblins wouldn't open up Goblin Grenade, either.
