we're back to the fringes of modern
what would be your discard engine for vengevine there?
i'm also looking to get back in to BG only, i remember the days when i started budget dredgevine without fetchlands, a card reminds me of that is rotting rats as my discard engine along side lotleth troll. i'm also looking into the following cards: noose constrictor, winding way, carrion feeder.
do you have any cards in mind for sultai? i can't think of a good card as a good looting substitute in blue.
After extensively testing out different iterations of Bridgevine without Hogaak and Looting I’ve become literally depressed. The deck IS truly useless in my testing. Looting helped the deck rebuild its hand and without being able to flashback anything for card draw, you just get stuck with a bunch of small recursive creatures that have no power.
I was hopeful that Demon of Deaths Gate on turn 2 would be good...but the minute it hits the field it basically gets removed...so turn 2 9/9 flying trample is actually worse than Hogaak.
Please for the love of god somebody help the diehard Bridgevine players keep this archetype alive somehow! Playing this deck without its key components is miserable!
Graveyard Filler: Stitcher's Supplier - same role as what it used to be pre faithless looting ban Satyr Wayfinder - same role as what it used to be pre faithless looting ban Winding Way - a great card as it can draw us multiple cards, with the number of creature cards in the deck, it's possible to get 3~4 cards from this if we choose creatures. it can also get us lands if badly needed (situations wherein we have creature heavy hand and we want to have a 3rd land). the downside for this is that it's a non-bo with vengevine and prized amalgam if ever we chose creature.
Discard Engine:*this is where looting will be missed* Lotleth Troll - a zombie with evasion and regenerative abilities. a discard engine for vengevine and amalgam that will likely to end up in our hands from card draw or winding way. winding way can provide the food needed to buff our lotleth troll. (incase we need to discard multiple recursive creatures, don't be afraid to cast it even without the extra mana for regeneration) Cryptbreaker - a zombie that can do triple job as a discard engine, token generator and card draw engine. Collective Brutality - pretty straight forward.
Beaters: Lotleth Troll - has evasion / regenenarative ability and can be buffed by discarding recursive beaters + winding way. Prized Amalgam and Vengevine - recursive threats Carrion Feeder - can be buff by our recursive creatures + tokens from cryptbreaker, can save our creature from exile effects. Gurmag Angler - turn2 zombie fish ftw!
Weakness:
- biggest weakness of the deck is it's prone to a chalice for 1 due to 1-drop heavy creatures, not sure if cavern of souls can help here. good thing we have access to force of vigor.
- blast zone / engineered explosives, same with chalice, we have too many 1-drop creatures.
- deck is somewhat a zombie tribal and exposed to plague engineer.
Notable Exclusion: Bloodghast
i tried to fill it in but it just request for more discard engine which we are lacking, i removed it and put cryptbreaker + collective brutality on it's slot. another thing i don't like with bloodghast is that it increases the number of creatures that can't block. i think the list already have enough threats so bloodghast "might" not be needed.
let me know what you guys think about this list, feedbacks are greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!
Instead of looking to creature based discard outlets, maybe we move to Cathartic Reunion? For non-creature spells, I think CR, Lightning Axe, and maybe even Altar of Dementia are reasonable. Possibly Creeping Chill with a dredge package?
Demon of Death's Gate does a decent Hogaak impression but you need sac outlets in case of PTE and Settle the Wreckage.
I really like Lazotep Reaver with DDG but it's so weak otherwise that is probably not worth it. I do think that Cathartic is powerful enough to keep us competitive. Especially considering our best turn 1 play is usually stitcher anyway
Demon of Death's Gate is a bad card. it really hurts sacrificing 3 creatures paying 6 life only to be countered or removed.
btw i found some good cards that you might like in your sultai list:
stream of thought - early self mill to fill the graveyard, in long games it can re-buy useful cards in the graveyard back to library we can even loop this back if you have multiple, we can also transition into mill back-up plan with stream of thought + altar of dementia.
I’ve been wondering if Demon of Deaths Gate might actually work alright with Creeping Chill. I’m actually surprised how similar FuneralofGod’s list is to the list I’ve been working on with DDG.
bounce (reflector mage) counterspell (mana leak) and removals (path) doesn't hurt much (it still hurt somehow)for hogaak because you only convoke/delve cards with it and just refill the graveyard again and you may cast it back from the graveyard, but with DDG it would sting so much due to the cost you're paying to play the card.
This is the list I’ve been tuning. Similar to the other person who commented a bit earlier, I don’t think we need bloodghast in the Demon list and it allows us Golgari Thug which is the best card in the deck probably. It gets our demon back...and it fills our graveyard as early as turn 1 with Neonate.
Neonate is kind of a must have in the deck now. Though it doesn’t work for DDG sac...it’s good enough to be a 2 of. (It’s the closest thing to Looting we have!)
Creeping Chill is good enough to offset the cost of DDG. This is assuming we have decent luck with dredges and mills.
The Lazotep Reavers are better than I expected, and the turn 2 Demon is fairly consistent. I almost wonder if another aggro list with the old Goblin Bushwhacker plan would benefit with Lazotep. If anything it protects us against other go wide decks with an extra body.
Also, I’ve tried Goblin Lore, Burning Inquiry, Thought Scour, and a bunch of other ideas...none of them are as good as Cathartic Reunion in this list IMO.
If we can’t play demon...we can always use Lotleth Troll and keep discarding Golari Thug to grow the Troll.
Overall...it’s starting to feel more consistent. The list is such a tight list...but I do wish we could fit Satyr Wayfinder for the Creeping Chill synergy.
I was also thinking about the cool things that could happen if the deck played 1 copy of Altar of Dementia. If you sac the demon...9 cards is a lot to mill. Imagine hitting 4 Creeping Chills after sac’ing demon! That would be pretty nuts!
U/B is going to be a cool version of the deck I think. I think it might just lose vengevine though and become more dredge oriented. This would free up the extra slots for Skaab Ruinator with the Prized Amalgam + Altar shell.
Is it as good as straight up dredge though?
I totally overlooked that aspect! Very nice job on spotting that! Stream is now dead to my DDG list, I was thinking about splashing blue for it...maybe still ok in U/B Shell.
I think I’m going to cut back on 1 land to try out Noxious Revival. This seems like a perfect 1 of to raise the consistency of DDG.
So I’ve updated my Demon of Deaths Gate list. Noxious Revival is definitely a good choice!
Also Sibsig Muckdraggers seems kind of interesting. It can immediately return DDG to your hand and give you a body to sack. Quite costly for 9 mana though, and it’s hard to consider a slot for it...possibly another 1 of card but the deck really has to keep consistency!
I think I would play Pit Keeper before the Muckdraggers. Cast PK as your first creature for the turn, 3rd creature in play, return DDG and cast to trigger VV.
DDG shenanigans aside, I've been having success with my Cathartic list. No demons, chill & dredge package
No looting makes it a lot harder to keep 1-land opening hands but as long as I can cast Cathartic, Wayfinder, or Glowspore on turn two, then I can usually explode on turn 3
Wow, Pit Keeper is perfect...never saw that in my hours of searching for a similar card! Definitely gonna consider that one!
Still not sold on DDG though. It’s not as consistent as I’d like it to be. Not nearly as easy to play late game either, due to the cost.
I’ve also been testing 2 Goblin Bushwhacker in my shell instead of Cryptbreaker. Gives Lazotep Reavers and 1/1 Thugs a bit of an upside and helps the deck be a bit more aggro in case we don’t have DDG. I do like your inclusion of Glowspore Shaman and might consider it as well, and you might’ve made the right choice in your DDG list by cutting 1 copy. Haven’t tried cutting 1 from my list yet, but it sucks getting flooded with Demons in hand.
I agree completely! Tried running a list that was almost identical. I wound up with 3 Vengevines in my hand for the entire game and it felt really bad!
I keep finding that Neonate is now a must have in the deck of it runs Vengevine. Also, I keep coming back to Golgari Thug, because it allows us to sac it and skip a dredge to get things like Neonate back repeatedly to keep discarding.
All in all, I just don’t like the Sultai lists at the moment. They aren’t terrible, and can even run Skaab Ruinator to replace Hogaak...but I loved the Jund shell, and splashing all this blue just turns the deck into a less explosive dredge deck with some Vengevines added for flavor.
A card I’ve been heavily researching is Dreadhorde Arcanist. This almost seems like a good zombie to play in jund lists because it can flashback our 1 cmc spells. It might lessen the downside of things like Burning Inquiry and Memory Sluice by allowing us to flash them back for value.
Well guys, in a bunch of testing I’ve come up with a fresh idea for the deck.
This might be too cute...but I’ve built a Vengevine deck with Living End on a stick (Dreadhorde Arcanist)!
Basically, Dreadhorde can be used to flashback any of the spells in our deck for free. So the idea is to mill a ton of cards off Memory Sluice and play Living End as early as turn 3. Play Dreadhorde Arcanist on turn 2 and use him to flashback Memory Sluice if the graveyard is empty. In a backup scenario, we are also a Vengevine deck so we can have an explosive early game and an equally explosive midrange play!
Once again, this deck is quite the meme...it’s all in on the graveyard with no interaction, similar to the old Bridgevine lists. It’s weak to main deck hate...but what more do you want out of an all in graveyard combo deck?! Think of Living End as our new Bridge from Below.
We can also use Claim//Fame to get Dreadhorde out of the grave and give it haste to combo off for 3 mana! If the game goes too long, you can just suspend the Living End to add a 3 turn clock.
Also, some tuning might be required...I’m still trying to figure out the best topper for a shell like this. We need 2 copies of a big beefy creature that makes the opponent sacrifice things on etb. Tyrant of Discord seemed to fit that role, but again, I haven’t spent a lot of time looking for better options. Suggestions?
already settled and satisfied with my list below, it's less explosive but the meta with a lighter graveyard hate makes the inconsistent explosive start somehow tolerable for me. the list has an aristocrat style Plan-B with Blood Artist, this is for board stall or to fight under ensnaring bridge.
i'll just gonna leave this list as is until an interesting card came out from the new set.
Figured I’d post 2 different lists. 1 is the back to basics old school vengevine aggro strategy. This is still viable if we play Memnites and Ornithopters to cheat out Vengevines on turn 1. Goblin Bushwhacker just speeds up the deck by a large amount and with all the 0 cmc stuff, you can give everything haste and quickly steal games! Walking Ballista and Hangarback Walker don’t work well anymore because there is no bridge from below for value off them dying. But overall the list takes us back to the “explosive” nature of Vengevine and is still viable through all the bans.
Secondly, we have my wombo combo version of Dredgevine with the interaction between Dreadhorde Arcanist and Living End. Purphoros’ God of the Forge can win the game on the spot if we resolve Living End with Purphoros’ (or multiples) in the graveyard. It’s an instant wincon with the downside of being an all in combo deck without much interaction. Once again, the idea is that we pretty much turned Living End into a new BfB. We want to mill it and start getting value off it quickly. It can close out the game by being flashed back...or just hard cast it for Suspend to give the opponent a 3 turn clock.

the list is very reminiscent of my very first budget build for dredgevine (2016) so i quite have an idea how it goes: https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/established-modern/aggro-tempo/648449-dredgevine?page=15#c364
