I'm hoping Lorwyn or Dominaria are in the cards soon. Those planes will not have been revisited in over a decade by the time Shadows over Innistrad block is done - I think it's time to go back. And when it comes to reprints, I'm actually more hopeful that we'll be featured in a Modern Event Deck or that we'll (finally) get some love from Modern Masters than I am an actual set reprint. A lot of the cards we want to see again wouldn't really move the needle in Standard, so they're less likely to show up.
While I also would try good old Tidal Warrior, I disagree with Cursecatcher as a card to b replaced.
I love it. Just try a diferent deck and play against it. you see how annoying he is. gainst bad players he wins games. against good he helps to tempo.
And merrow...he is alright. I like him much more now with harbinger. THats fine.
our tribe / deck is great.
Merfolks draw cards, counter spells, boounce creatures, bring more than one body etc
If i could print merfolks, i would go the route of tidebinder and harbinger. utility stuff, like hatebears.
To be honest with you, it's going to take a darn good card to trump either Cursecatcher or Merrow Reejerey, and the creatures most likely to see play would be utility creatures. However, it'd be nice to have an option that was a 1-drop with utility against foes that don't feature much in the way of instants or sorceries (which turn Cursecatcher into Merfolk of the Pearl Trident). As for the Reej... it's nothing personal (and I've gone to bat for the card more than most on this forum), but he's a 3-drop that dies to Lightning Bolt. His upside is worth it, but there's clearly a bit of room for improvement.
Going to FNM tonight with a list based off that guy who posted about six sea's effects a few pages back (sorry, I can't seem to find the post now but if this was you go ahead and take credit) This will be my first time with no Reejerey's so we'll see how this goes.
Debating on swapping out the Chalices for 2 more counters (either dispel or pierce) and 1 of something else (maybe a fourth harbinger or a third snag) I'm playing at a new store tonight so I suppose I'll just have to see what the meta is like.
I'm currently at my LGS playing modern. Question with cavern of souls in play and playing merfolk off it. Do you have to announce that you are tapping it for blue mana to use to give your merfolk uncountable? Or is it assumed that when you tap it for mana that it's producing blue?

I believe it is assumed, but it can't hurt to specify.
It came up a while ago, and while I think it was handled incorrectly in that instance, I believe if you cast a merfolk with cavern that realistically would have been cast using cavern's second ability, it can't be countered.
In paper magic, you do not have to say so. If you are casting a creature of the correct type it is assumed, we had this asked a few months ago. A judge will rule in your favor and if they don't they are wrong.
If they cast a counter spell and you are using a Cavern, the counter resolves and your creature goes into play. That is there mistake, you just have to announce a legal creature type upon playing the Cavern. If you don't name a creature type, that is when things CAN get weird. If you forget and your opponent calls you on it, call a judge over. He will make you choose a creature type then and there, and you go about your business. It is like True-Name Nemesis. There has to something named, it is part of the card resolving.
For those talking about a flying 1/1 Merfolk, there's always Triton Shorestalker, which is flatly unblockable. However, I do find the tempo of curse-catcher to be huge in a lot of match ups. Even their ability to trade for a removal spell that's targetting a higher-priority Merfolk. I'd love to see a 2/1 Merfolk for 1. There are so many 2/1s for 1 in White and Green now. It doesn't seem too unreasonable.
Soooo... this happened. The good news is that we no longer have to worry about Bloom (which was a fairly tough matchup). The bad news is that we both lost a favorable matchup (URX Twin) and a police deck for our worst matchup (Affinity). This probably keeps us at Tier 2 for the foreseeable future.
Im super concerned as someone who bought into this last month.... Affinity and tron become the best decks in the format by a large margin and now Im not sure what we do to adapt... Granted I love my tron matchup but affinity is going to be an ass
I literally just lost to twin tonight, but I'm PISSED that WOTC banned it. Makes no sense, literally the definition of the format...

I run more seas then usual anyway its favorable but by no means confortable at all either way, and affinity is going to be the entire meta seemingly now.
