I guess the other question I have is if Scourglass would be a good sideboard card against someone trying to grind out affinity or not by trying to out-creature summon affinity (if that is even possible). It looks like it would work well since we have nothing but artifacts, but the casting cost of double white just to get it out seems like it might be a pain to cast.

Affinity doesn't want to have a 5 mana stuck in hand. Affinity doesn't even want to see two 3 mana creatures in the opening hand.
Affinity has galvanic blast to deal on average 4 damage to a creature, or finish an opponent off. If your opponent just played a creature with more than 4 toughness with flying, either they're losing bad and you finish them with invasive flyers, or they just board wiped you and you brick for several turns while being chipped at
Affinity plays thoughtcast for long, grindy games.
Affinity has barely changed since it's birth in modern.
Honestly, I think hangarback is just a weak alternative to overseer. Overseer not being answered immediately in nearly every game over, I can't say the same for hangar.
Ghiapur as a sideboard card is the best thing that's happened to affinity in a while, to be honest.
Well, not so much overthinking as just wanting to understand a bit more of the mind set for the deck. It seems really fast with getting out memnite and/or ornithopter on turn 1, drop a darksteel citadel, tap for springleaf drum, use that to summon a signal pest or some other low cost artifact creature like frogmite, and start delivering a lot of pain on turn 2.

How well would a choke do in sideboard? I know we have blood moons but when it comes to blue based deck, blood moon does not do much if anything against them meanwhile affinity may run an island but as a whole wouldn't affect us much if any. Is it due to sb space or meta call? Or is it due to the fact the sb needs cards that are very potent that will seal the game when played?
it depends on meta. is merfolk, splintertwin or UW control heavy in your met and such. somehow I find it to be lacklustre due to the fact that people had start to get around those cards with fastland, legendary land, cavern of soul and such. therefore it really depends on what you want to hate out on. currently blood moon work best to lock down some deck but can be again useless when people play with blood moon in their mind and start fetching basic and such. somehow players learnt to get around hate cards that it might not be that effective. therefore use it with caution as it could be a dead card.
At the end of day, it depends on how well your local meta adapt to hate cards that determine the effectiveness of cards like choke and blood moon.
Charles is right, Choke in the SB is definitely a meta call. It's a not win card, but if they tap out it could slow them down
I'm not 100% sure if I like it, but I wouldn't tell someone it's a bad idea either
Honestly, my goal in games is to kill the opponent fast before they stabilize and hit me with hate cards. I may keep 1 or 2 important cards in hand on games 2 and 3 if I
don't feel lethal coming soon on my part.
How does everyone feel about running 2x mainboard Spellskites? While everyone was playing around with Hangarback, I've been super impressed with Spellskites inclusion. When I was playing my jund deck against an affinity player last week, his Spellskites were making game winning decisions plays against Abrupt Decays and lightning bolts. It's straight up good in nearly every matchup I can think of. Infect? yep. Tron? Yup? Junk and Abzan? Yeth! Some kind of UW control? check. Even the mirror for Ravagers and plating? Yes, sir.
I sold off my 3 copies of Hangarback before the clash pack was unveiled, I don't think it's better than any of the established 2 drops Affinity already had
I'm playing the Hangarback version, but do have a Spellskite main as well. How does it help in the mirror against Cranial Plating exactly? Equip/attach is to a creature you control, would Spellskite's ability still be relevant?
2x spellskite main board is very good, i almost want to say it is a must. do take note that there are some very bad match-up for affinity like infect, splintertwin, jund and even grixis control. these deck take up a bigger portion of the meta, compared to amulet bloom, elves, grishoalbrand and such. unless your meta is infected with those type of decks, you will never go wrong with 2 spellskite in the main. it also host mirror arcbound ravager by redirecting the modular.
hangarback is a good card that i was thinking of using but never did. i think hangarback back works better in a tempered steel version of affinity as compared to traditional affinity. most affinity will not take the control position unless the other deck is faster or threaten a combo.
thoughtseize and spell pierce are just a mean to stop hate cards, they do not win you game. understand your position in the game is part of how well you will pilot this deck.
in the mirror match, blocking is a essential way of winning the game. i find vault skirge with cranial plating a very good tempo swing. sometime to the point that the only best way to win is via infect win. infect win is one of the better way to win in mirror. as long as you can find an opening, you will win the game. it require patience to wait till that opportune time. therefore i suggest practicing with mirror as part of training as it is not just about luck, but also finding the opportune timing for a counterattack that bring you from a losing board state to a winning one. in recent games, i have also learnt that our mama base is rather fragile as people can fulminitot mage you, ancient grudge your colour sour and such to disrupt your tempo. in a mirror, destroying their springleaf drum and mox opal can be a line of play to prevent others from ancient grudging you and such. so i hope these information can help you to pilot the deck better.
Honestly, I kinda disagree with spellskite being too grindy. I think Hangarback walker is more grindy, and pays off less. I dislike Hangarback walker as long as cards like Path of exile, vaporsnag, and Cryptic Command exist. I love sticking a spellskite down against removal heavy decks, bolt can't kill it, so the average player may counter it or use a precious removal spell to leave your next powerhouse to give you gas.
I learned the hard way that spellskite is a MUST answer if I have removal in my hand, I do not want it getting in my way of destroying a plating or overseer.
Honestly, once I drop him I'm mainly just worried about a board wipe or a very specific anti affinity hate card. He's honestly even good against non-interactive decks you have to race against. I'll gladly steal Amulet Bloom's double strike 12/6 ability from Titan. He's even good against Karn to redirect if you can finish for lethal with the rest of your cards
Spellskite is a massive roadblock to infect, and it helps shore up the match against Twin until they draw K Command, Ancient grudge, or some form of Bolt, snap, bolt moves.
Spellskite is the nuts, man.
I'm not replacing my Master of Etheriums with hangar backs; he's amazing against non-interactive decks with light amounts of a removal, and helps me race way faster against unfair decks.
I already cut the 3rd copy of menmite for the 2nd copy of Spellskite, so I can't really cut Menmnite when I sideboard. He's good for explosive hands, but I don't like too many 1/1's that can be chumped blocked easily
Have you guys watched Karsten's test video's of Hangar? At first I thought it was just him being dismissive about a list that wasn't his, but I think he's right, it's too slow. Honestly, I think these hangarback walker affinity decks having good results is just the deck being so good in general
I don't like the 17th land as a flex spot, yes, there's better opening hands with 7 cards on a more consistent basis, but that deck mulligans well, so you can afford to mulligan aggressively. Affinity is one of those few decks where you can mulligan to 5, draw one creature and a plating, and threaten to win the game by turn 4 or 5. I found myself flooding out too much with the extra land and 3rd menmite. That's just me, personally, I wouldn't tell anyone they're wrong for that.
I won my last FNM in the semi finals when i mulliganed to 5 and drew a vault skirge, 2 platings, land, and a mox opal. I won by turn 4 or 5, I think. Then I won the final on a mulligan with drawing 3 signal pests, 2 blinkmoths and a cranial plating on turn 4 or 5. The deck is so nasty, I'll take my spellskite giving me protection over a slow ass hangarback that MAY give me 2 1/1's
Nope, i think you will need at least 2-3 ancient grudge at the very least. reason being spellskite and arcbound ravager modular transfer. you need it to get rid of both. therefore ancient grudge is better against mirror than wear//tear. the only reason i run it is because of stony silence, otherwise i will run 3-4 ancient grudge.
after playing with etched champion main board for a while and trying master of etherium, i have to say that master of etherium do not perform as well as etherium in term of resilience and evasion. master of etherium can be chump block all day long and not deal a single bit of damage unlike etched champion that block like a champ and hit hard once a plating or modular is on him, giving opponent a very short clock.
Master of etherium is a 1 of in my deck. I MB 3 etched champions to use as a pierce strategy. Impossible to kill without a board wipe
You guys are forgetting etherium gives everyone +1/+1, he impacts things immediately if not removed, better if the opponent is tapped out and you have some guys out already.
Definitely have 2 ancient grudges in the SB, maybe even 3. I'm not liking wear and tear very much.
Thoughtseize is exactly what combo decks don't want to see. It also helps snag hate cards out.
I don't fault anyone for liking walker, he's not a bad card. Just slow.
I like galvanic blast in a lot of game 1s, depending on the matchup it's easy to sideboard out and put in a few cards in its place. Affinity doesn't need to side out much ever.
Sometimes I wish I could squeeze in some thoughtcasts, but I can't see myself cutting more.than 1 galvanic blast in this meta
Hey as someone just starting to get into modern, what would a budget affinity deck have in it? Yes I know it won't have the same power as the lists with ravages and such, but still.
Edit: This is what I'm looking at so far. I also have 4 Hangarbacks if they can find a place and 4 Darksteel Citadels.
In my meta, I see a abzan midrange, coco abzan, affinity, grixis control, jund, splintertwin, elves, 8racks, lantern prison, grishoalbrand, amulet bloom, merfolk, burn, zoo and tron. spellskite play a very important par in my game as bait or as hate cards. I do realized that it is a bit slower as compared to one build with master of eterium. however speed is not always the best as affinity is not just about speed, but also resilience. hangarback pose another problem when you see kataki. you can't pay for so many artefact. somehow whenever I see decks that have white in their colour, I will always assume kataki and stony silence in game 2 and 3. because of this assumption, I plan my play differently. turn 2 stony silence and kataki can kill us out right if we play the wrong land and such. so when you have these consideration in your mind, you can't go as fast as you want, therefore the resilience come in. Master of etherium is all good, however a timely removal can screw all your calculation and expose you to bad trade or counterattack. I have fell into that trap for quite a few time, therefore I stick to etched champion.
against amulet bloom, galvanic blast is not very useful. I will bring in torpor orb, keep my spellskite and bring in blood moon. if they can resolve a hornet queen, your board state is not fabulous, most likely on the losing side. etched champion will be your best bet to bring in some damage. thoughtseize and spell pierce works but only if you drew them early to disrupt their tempo. therefore it depends on what sort of hand you keep.

Even though this is a budget question, I could still recommend Chief of the Foundry . This replaces Master of Etherium (mind you, not perfectly), and is a lighting rod for removal as it pumps your team similarly to the latter. Mind you, it will not grow with your artifacts.
Still, go to the budget forum to check for more options.

Tired of changing it every x months, so whatever list caught my attention...
In the morning of Monday, I was fixing the sideboard of my deck in order to be ready for the modern tournament. I started thinking about if I should add a card to my sideboard that helped me against Stony Silence. I thought on Nature's Claim because its CMC and helps against artifact and enchantment, but after several minutes I decided to not use any card against Stony Silence because my deck should be faster enough to beat it.
I’ll try to comment my walkthrough that leads me to win the 18-man modern tournament, but just mentioning some good plays or misplays because I’m pretty bad remembering what I side in against a deck or how was my initial hand.
Match 1 (unidentify deck): 2-0
I really didn’t know what was the deck I played against because my opponent didn't play any relevant card to take him serious. All my cards started to show up and and do their thing. It was a like a warm up match.
Match 2 (Abzan): 1-2
I wasn't expecting to play against Abzan or at least that soon because as I mentioned before I wasn’t prepared for Stony Silence. Well, game 1 was easy for me because my hand was very fast. Putting a Cranial Plating, Vault Skirge, Arcbound Ravager and Signal Pest sealed the game. Game 2, I was expecting for a very good hand to outrace Stony Silence, it was decent and decided to keep it. My plan was to play Blood Moon on turn 2 to slow my opponent but I couldn't because of a turn 1 Thoughtseize. On turn 2 my opponent played Stony Silence and completely shuts me down, and then started to kill 1 by 1 my creatures. Game 3 was the same that the previous game.
Match 3 (Twin): 2-1
Game 1, I kept 2 Galvanic Blast in my opening hand, and I just started to put in the battlefield some pressure with Signal Pest, Vault Skirge and Ornithopter hitting on every turn, at the end of my turn he played Pestermite and I thought that the combo was there, my opponent tried to play Splinter Twin and in response I played Galvanic Blast targeting Pestermite, he Dispels it and I played the other Galvanic Blast, it was a win for me. The game 2 I had it under my control because of an early Spellskite until I made a misplay attacking with Signal Pest, Memnite and Spellskite, he decided to block my Spellskite with a Deceiver Exarch and after that bold it. At that point I lost the game because I didn't have any answer to Splinter Twin, even for 3 turns that it took him to find the combo. Game 3 was really easy because of 2 earlier Spellskite, plus Cranial Plating and a bunch of little friends.
Match 4 (Grixis Control): 2-0
Game 1, it was easy, a late Etched Champion helped me to sealed the game. Game 2, an earlier Etched Champion plus a bunch of artifacts and creatures. My Champion attacked on every turn, my opponent casted 2 Kolaghan's Command burning and destroying my artifacts in order to leave my Etched Champion without metalcraft, my opponent played Cryptic Command twice to tap my creatures and get some extra time. He had 5 life left, he fetched for a land, his life got down to 4, after that he played Snapcaster Mage targeting a Kolaghan's Command, in response to the target I sacrifice Relic of Progenitus and draw a card, for my surprise it was a Galvanic Blast.
Match 5: Intentional draw.
Top 8 (Burn): 2-0
Game 1, it was a close game because he played an Eidolon of the Great Revel but my Vault Skirge helped me a lot. Game 2, was even closer to him because he played 2 Eidolon and my life total was a rollercoaster because of my Vault Skirge and Signal Pest and his Burns. He had a last tricky attack that if I decided to block I wouldn’t be able to kill it in the next turn.
Top 4, we all decided to split the price but fight for the FNM Path to Exile (Abzan): 2-1
Yeah, it was the same opponent that beat me on Match 2. To keep it simple on game 1 I won because I had a good hand with Etched Champion. Game 2 I lost to Stony Silence. Game 3 was rough. I decided to remove the 3 Blood Moon that I side boarded in and kept Thoughseize and Spell Snare. My opponent didn’t have Stony Silence but I didn’t have a good hand. I played 2 Cranial Platting that were being blocked by Lingering Souls. I think there was a misplay in his decision because he decided to play Liliana of the Veil instead of Lingering Soul’s flashback. After that I got the game and match.
Sorry if I extend the story but I think there were some things that I needed to mention. Also, I apologize for my grammar mistakes, English is not my native language, so I’m learning.
Great write up! Wish more were as in depth. Any changes to the MB or SB at this time?
Talking about my main deck I wouldn't change anything because it is fine for the current meta of the local store I used to play (which is very aggressive). The sideboard could be tweak, I think that I could remove 1x Blood Moon and add 1x Nature's Claim or 1x Wear-Tear, in order to have a card against Stony Silence or any other enchantment.
3 blood moon is too many. adding that wear//tear is just about right same to my list run previously. i am comtemplating adding ghirapur aethergrid, might cut spell grafdigger's cage. as grafdigger's cage application is mainly useful in abzan coco and coco deck mainly with some splash effect against grishoalbrand, which can be countered by spells pierce and such. torpor orb and relic of progenitus also cover that deck, therefore it seems the most logical in my opinion.

The sideboard could be tweak, I think that I could remove 1x Blood Moon and add 1x Nature's Claim or 1x Wear-Tear, in order to have a card against Stony Silence or any other enchantment.
