Niv-Mizzet, Reborn was printed in War of the Spark and has sparked an entirely new archetype in Modern, brought to us by Cavedan (Username) from the Faithless Brewing podcast. He popularized the deck and as it has evolved and put up more results, the community has boomed in size. The deck is built around playing a 6/6 flyer for 5 mana that frequently draws 3-4 cards. And that's the huge draw to the deck. It's 5-colors and the mana has to be terrible right? Not so fast, recent printings have made our mana quite consistent and resistant to hate.
These 2 cards from Modern Horizons have smoothed out the mana for the deck in a way that I didn't believe was possible. With some snow-basics and plenty of fetches we rarely have problems casting our spells on curve.
At it's heart, Bring to Niv is a control deck that uses Niv and planeswalkers to win the game. We have to get there though, and these spells are crucial to getting us to that point.
These are the 2 most crucial spells in stabilizing the game and bridging us to casting our win-conditions. Lightning Helix is crucial against Burn and other aggressive decks to remove threats and gain some life. Assassin's Trophy's downside of giving a land to our opponent doesn't hurt us as much as other decks because of how much value our deck creates, and how far ahead Niv gets us. The entire goal of the deck is surviving until Niv.
Bring to Light serves as both a utility removal spell, and fetches our win-condition. As silly as it seems, many of us have cast Bring to Light to find a Lightning Helix.
There are a few different variations of building the deck. One split is on the Snow vs. Non-Snow manabase. Your decision on which to build changes the deck significantly. The snow version has recently become the more popular version of the deck thanks mostly due to Arcum's Astrolabe. Astrolabe acts as a mana-fixer, as well as often being the only T1 play in the deck which cantrips. Astrolabe also functions very well with Teferi, Time Raveler to draw cards when you need to. The downside to the Snow-version is that it can lead to some awkward opener's that only have basics for lands. The Non-Snow variant often offers better mana-fixing out of your landbase, to the downside of being weaker to Blood Moon and causing more damage due to playing more shocks.
The other major variation is playing Birds of Paradise versus not. During Hogaak Summer it was almost unanimously thought of better to play Birds. This was largely due to needing to interact with the Hogaak and other graveyard decks on T2 with our 3 mana spells like Kaya's Guile and Ashiok, Dream Render. Now that the format has slowed down there's a large split of players who prefer Birds or other mana accelerants and players who choose no accelerants. The upside of playing Birds is having our powerful suite of 3 mana spells available on turn 2. Teferi in particular is a very powerful turn 2 play, especially if you're lined up against UWx or GBx deck. The downside being that drawing a Birds of Paradise on turn 8 feels really bad. The obvious advantage to not playing Birds is that you get to put 4 more 'good' spells into the deck that aren't terrible to draw past the opening turns.
While a cool idea there is already a thread for Niv... about 4 threads down from this right now. Looks like you put a lot of work in on this. Hope it doesn't go to waste.
Yeah, but that thread is quite dead and inactive. Hopefully we can keep this one with more resources linked to it. Will also have the Initial post growing with info as the deck grows.
Finished 2-1 tonight at a weekly modern event. Lost to Tron Round 1 1-2. I kept an iffy 7 in game 2 that I probably should have mull'd away. Beat Amulet Titan 2-0 and Merfolk 2-1.
The whole site is quite dead. Sucks. This was a thriving community with lots of advise and suggestions. Good luck with the deck, but I still think maybe not separating a thread in to two parts when the first is struggling for breath is a better idea. Doesn't matter which survives. Btw a deck list here or there could be great.
Yeah, but I'm lazy. Like a lot if other people that may view this page. You'll increase odds of getting responses if you actually put in the effort. Not being rude... just being honest.
It'll be nice to see a line or two for the different card options for the deck.
As there are so many possiblities this could have players looking to pick up the deck
(unless they opt to just copy one of the lists that placed well).
I wonder why Bloodbraid Elf isn't mentioned here as it is very good in the deck and pretty much your closest backup for Niv and mych easier to cast.
I also didn't see Growth Spiral and Tidehollow Sculler in the cards section and I actually play with these cards and like them quite a bit in the deck. Eladamri's Call can also be a solid 1x-of in the deck as it can get you Niv (and other creatures, especially post board bullets) without needing to pay 5-mana upfront.
For reference here is my list (Wrenn and Six is the only card I'd add if I had it):
That is a very interesting list! I did not list Growth Spiral or BBE as everybody in the Niv discord that has tried them has also ended up cutting them, myself included. Surprised to see you enjoying BBE so much, I can definitely add that to the OP. I can't say I've seen many people try out Tidehollow Sculler, which also increases how good BBE is. I definitely urge you to try the deck with W6 when you can, that card is incredible in Niv. I'm very interested to hear more about how BBE and Sculler have been for you
City of Brass is actually better in this deck than mana confluence. It seems counter-intuitive, but the life loss being on the stack separately means you can lightning helix before it leaves the stack if you're at 1 life. It's a niche example, but definitely could come up.
Also, with Growth Spiral, you are running 7 simic cards. It might be a bit too many and could make your Niv hits less effective.

After the Tournament I was able to trade for a Magusof the Moon which I'm testing as a 1 of in the board for big mana decks like Tron and Titan variants. The prevailing thought from the discord is our deck can handle it while Titan and Tron will be heavily interrupted by it.
Omnath, Locus of Creation is a huge card for this deck - it should be a 4 of for sure in the 80 card deck. Prismari Command is also a strong new card that slots right in to this deck.
Some recent MH2 goodies that make the deck more powerful are General Ferrous Rokiric and Vindicate. The general is particular is super strong and triggers twice off a bring to light and dodges most removal in the format. I've gone down to only 2 Niv to speed up the deck.
Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer is also not bad in this deck - I actually think it's better than Birds of Paradise. This deck runs a ton of spot removal to clear the way after all. T1 Ragavan followed by T2 Wrenn / Helix / Decay / Dreadbore is a very strong line.
Veil of Summer I think is an awesome sideboard card and should be a 3-4x of in the sideboard, it's just so strong.
Other marginal new cards worthy of consideration - Manamorphose and Expressive Iteration are multicolored cards that pair well with the general and smooth out mana and draws.
Here's my list - I've found it's decently well positioned in the metagame - Inquisition of Kozilek (which is being run way more than Thoughtseize right now) tends to whiff against us a lot and we can just go over the top of most decks because we have the strongest plays and tons of card advantage. Fracturing Gust is also extra powerful out of the board right now given all the food / hammer time / enchantress / affinity decks out there.
