This is a "Mono White Devotion" deck powered by Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx deck with a toolbox element thanks to Thalia's Lancers which can fetch legendary cards like Nykthos and the best angels in White.
The deck is basically a "White Tron" (or a modern EDH deck) that can produce a lot of mana relatively quickly (with a good draw) and flood the board with giant creatures and Planeswalkers (Gideon and Elspeth).
The deck plays 8x borderposts as part of the manabase to help with devotion early and combines it with Knight of the White Orchid to ramp and Weathered Wayfarer so search out Nykthos or just more lands.
The deck is a bit inconsistent because of the heavy reliance on the borderposts and Nykthos but when it works it is very powerful and can crush fair decks.
Also, should I maindeck Kitchen Finks over Boros Reckoner ?
Both are good against aggro but Finks can gain life (and is better against non-damage based removal) which might be more relevant.
Been playing a version of this on mtgo and Runed Halo is amazeballs. I've done a lot of different 2 drops and it by far has been the best.
I don't have all of the cards I'd like to try, like the leylines (hoping they'll be in mm3), but what I'm doing right now is splashing green by putting in some fetches and a Temple Garden and a Canopy Vista. Between the fetches being able to grab a dual and the borderposts it's pretty easy to splash green or blue. Singleton copies of Sigarda, Host of Herons and Dragonlord Dromoka have been working out pretty well.
The issue has been that a lot of decks are packing tons of spot removal or they're straight up combo and don't care what you are doing. So the devotion enabling creatures are eating dust or op wins through a combo or they get tron and a karn down..... Thalia's Lancers could tutor up answers to a lot of decks but that's pretty damn slow.
I suppose if we could hold out long enough we could tutor to get an answer against a lot of aggro decks. Kataki against affinity, Melira against infect etc. But storm/tron/ad nauseum/etc we're just too slow.
About the color-splashing, I don't think it is particularly necessary as White already has many good SB options and adding non-basic lands doesn't really work with the Borderposts' plan.
Though not used in the SaffronOlive build, I've had good results from 4x Wall of Omens + 4x Flickerwisp. The cantrip effect from Wall helps a bit with the consistency issues you mentioned.
Using Flickerwisp to renew ETB effects from Wall of Omens / Knight of the White Orchid / Thalia's Lancers nets you card advantage, and flickering enemy permanents can provide another angle of interaction, both of which are rare assets for Mono-white. Lastly, as a 3/1 flyer it can be an ok beater.
Both cards have a grey mana in their cost so they reduce the chance of being unable to cast then during setup with a Nykthos in play. If you only had room for one in your list I would prioritize giving Wall of Omens a shot.
Personally I like 2-3x Journey to Nowhere in the main, and 2x Oblivion Stone in the side -- the extra point of mana efficiency is usually worth it G1 for me but this is likely meta-dependent.
My own list is pretty lulzy and not tuned for competitive play, but I perhaps that might be useful.
We run green and blue borderposts, and fetches can grab plains for borderposts. With a single Temple Garden or Hallowed Fountain a splash is pretty easy and mostly has no risk. A turn 2/3 Liliana was giving me problems, so I did a splash for Sigarda and figured I'd throw Dromoka in there as well since counters were a problem in a lot of games.
Can't log into mtgo atm because it's down to check my list, but I only own one Runed Halo but I'm always happy to see it. I only own the one because I'm mainly an edh player but it's done a lot of work. I've used it to name Grapeshot against storm, goyf when I'm getting beat down, named liliana so she couldn't ultimate.....it's been pretty awesome and I'm going to buy more but I'm holding off until modern masters spoilers.
My list relies mainly on 2cc enablers, with no boros reckoners since It's a pain to cast sometimes and turn 3 I often like to activate weathered wayfarer. I don't own any leylines so that's another thing that I hope is in modern masters.
The 2cc enablers I've been trying out are conditionally good, like Knight of the Holy Nimbus, Kor Firewalker, White Knight etc. Knight of the Holy Nimbus has been better than expected. Sometimes it gives free blocks and/or survives boardwipes and I get to keep the devotion.
I find that Oblivion Ring can be a decent answer for PW's, and post board I can go up to 4x copies of them.
#I don't think that White Knight is good enough to play and Knight of the Holy Nimbus is decent but doesn't excel at any particular area like Boros Reckoner which can dissuade attacking completely until they find removal or get down an flying/evasive threat.
#Kor Firewalker is a good SB card but I prefer Kitchen Finks for "Burn" and aggro match-ups.
I think that Kitchen Finks might be a good mainboard option as well as it is resilient and only contributes slightly less to devotion than Boros Reckoner.
Shelldell,
#I like Wall of Omens as well I don't know where I could fit it in as I already have: 4x Knight of the White Orchid as my 2-drop creatures and cutting 3-drops would weaken the devotion plan and cutting payoff cards would weaken the win-condion of the deck.
#Flickerwisp is obviously a good creature but it's rather fragile (for devotion purposes) and not as good defensively as Boros Reckoner/Kitchen Finks (unless I play against a deck full of flyers).
Yeah, Mirran Crusader (or Paladin En-Vec) would be much better if you play against a lot BGx decks, though it is very bad against decks with Bolts so it is probably a SB card at best.
I had been messing around with different stuff. It was doing alright against 'fair' decks but it was having a lot of trouble with tron, combo etc
Haven't been impressed with the reckoners. Stuff flies over it, it eats removal or you get hands that are a white source short (why the list only has 3x nykthos). Been busy lately so I haven't had a chance to playtest this week.
OH and wayfarer being able to respond to a fetchland on the stack has been pretty sweet when you lack a borderpost.
I don't think it'll work, you can only search Tron lands with Weathered Wayfarer (only 2x-of in my deck) and it doesn't work with the devotion plan at all.
Running Expedition Map doesn't work with the devotion plan, that is why I use Weathered Wayfarer instead (which works with the Borderposts).
I guess I see a fault in the point for white devotion when your referenced legends require double the grey to white mana. And, Drum is not a worse Mind Stone just because you are not running zero cost artifacts. One vs two cost is the big difference.
I haven't touched the deck for a while and want to go back to it since the new set brought some interesting new white cards that might slot into it:
#Gideon of the Trials - pretty obvious as a 3-mana powerful PW that helps with devotion, I can see it replacing the 2nd Elspeth in my build.
#Gideon's Intervention - rather expensive at 4-mana but I consider using it over Nevermore in the SB as it combines it's effect with Runed Halo.
#Cast Out - rather slow at 4-cmc for the maindeck so I'd still go with Oblivion Ring/Banishing Light but maybe the 2x copies in the SB can be replaced with it as flash+cycling is a nice upside.
#Angel of Sanctions - an interesting creature version of Banishing Light but I'm not sure if it deserves a slot in the deck as it can't be tutored by Thalia's Lancers abd costs 5-mana which is much more than the enchantment alternatives.
Would Oketra's Monument be good in this deck ? It can be tutored by Thalia's Lancers which seems good.
The cost reduction isn't especially important but clogging the board with tokens seems really good when I have the big angels to win in the air.
Another new card which seems interesting here is Djeru, With Eyes Open which can be tutored for and get me a PW, it is a bit slow but offers nice utility.
Btw, Thalia's Lancers only gets better now that she'll be able to tutor for Planeswalkers.
a list they have had measured success with
Or because now Lancers can get planeswalkers. That could change lists a bit.
If I played this I'd definitely want Lancers as 4 of. Djeru as a 1 of. This allows you to put maximum amount of bodies on the board for the least amount of cards possible.
Would also like to see an Expedition map or two in here.
A good cheap removal spells that does give white devotion is Temporal Isolation Stasis Snare is probably the Oblivion Ring of choice. Flash and double devotion is pretty good.
Weathered Wayfarer fits the deck better than Expedition Map imho, the map doesn't add devotion as is extremely slow in a deck which isn't very fast to begin with.
Stasis Snare is better against creatures but Banishing Light is the better all-round removal.
I have Path to Exile against creatures as my instant speed option.
Hello all! I've recently started playing this deck and so far, I love it. I'm really surprised their isn't more activity here since the planeswalker rules change, the deck has been great for me. I feel we have plenty answers for Storm and Burn, along with having most fair creature decks crushed by raw power. So far I find us weak against Tron and more troubled against Titan Shift than I was expecting, so im trying a couple Ghost Quarter out of the side. I'm coming from Mono-Red Prison, so it's safe to say I'm not used to struggling against Titan Shift.. obviously Leyline is great, but the Valakuts keep the board clear without Avacyn. Is anyone out there truly grinding with this deck? I'm looking forward to bouncing ideas off of you guys if so! Here's my list;
I think that this maybe closer to the correct mix. I like about 5 borderposts instead of the full 8 border posts. I raised up the number of basic lands. I like the idea of increasing your devotion and keeping mana moving forward, but lowering your land count for Knight and Wayfarer, but I hate mulliganing hands wihout a basic to turn on the borderpost, ie keepable hand, but you have three borderposts with no land.
Otherwise, I am very close to the Westco list. I think the deck does powerful things. I like a one of Thalia's Lancers. I think we have strong answers so finding the right answer is good. But I also hate casting Lancers and losing the next turn when I had enough mana to cast an Elesh Norn and just not having an Answer card in hand because Lancers is rarely the answer itself.
Part of me wonders if Idyllic Tutor might not be a better tutor than Thalia's Lancers in the deck. We might need to look at other targets for same mana as Thalia's Lancers you could tutor and play Rest in Peace or Ruined Halo. But I'm not sure what they payoff Finisher.
The other card, I'm considering is Figure of Destiny. Its a creature, but you can dump mana into it later to make a finisher.
Yesterday I was testing the list Burnin Force posted (nice list man ) against a friend that plays martyr-proc and the deck worked really good. Anyways I found two things that make me think how to try to solve them.
In one game he begin with his best possible start (1st turn ascendant, 2nd martyr to 32 life, third 2 x ascendant. I hadn't all the removal needed for this kind of start.
In other game the situation was close similar but I could play runed halo to gain turns but finally he found an oblivion ring to get rid of my halo and the won me.
In other game we get to the very late game with the following situation:
he: 8 plains + emeria + 2x kami of false hope to recur + proc + wrath in hand
me: 8 plains + 4 borderposts + 4 leyline of the meek + 2 gideon emblem + 2 shepherds + lot of goats + 2 x secure the wastes in hand + heliod + nykhtos. All my goats were mmonsters but is a game I couldn't win because he was recurring kami turn after turn (one with emeria and the other with proc and even drawing PTE (which I only have 1 in library atm) i couldn't solve the issue.
I learn that grave recursion could be a problem and I couldn't broke that lock. I'm thinking on including wheel of sun and moon because it provide 2 devotion but the problem is that don't remove existing graveyards and because in the latest situation could not broke the lock also because although creatures are put in the bottom of the library he has ranger of eos to recicle and search for them.
@dennis: I like the ideo of kitchen finks but I don't know if they are really needed here btw.
So any other suggestion??

The deck plays 8x borderposts as part of the manabase to help with devotion early and combines it with Knight of the White Orchid to ramp and Weathered Wayfarer so search out Nykthos or just more lands.
The main finishers are: Iona, Shield of Emeria and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite (with Avacyn, Angel of Hope thrown in for good measure).
Here is the deck:
2x Weathered Wayfarer
4x Knight of the White Orchid
3x Boros Reckoner
1x Brimaz, King of Oreskos
3x Archangel of Tithes
1x Linvala, Keeper of Silence
4x Thalia's Lancers
1x Archangel Avacyn
1x Linvala, the Preserver
1x Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite
1x Avacyn, Angel of Hope
1x Iona, Shield of Emeria
2x Oblivion Ring
4x Leyline of Sanctity
Planeswalker (3)
1x Gideon Jura
2x Elspeth, Sun's Champion
Instant (3)
3x Path to Exile
Artifact (8)
4x Fieldmist Borderpost
4x Wildfield Borderpost
Land (17)
4x Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
13x Plains
2x Kitchen Finks
2x Nevermore
2x Oblivion Ring
1x Path to Exile
3x Rest in Peace
3x Runed Halo
2x Story Circle
The deck is a bit inconsistent because of the heavy reliance on the borderposts and Nykthos but when it works it is very powerful and can crush fair decks.

Running Expedition Map doesn't work with the devotion plan, that is why I use Weathered Wayfarer instead (which works with the Borderposts).
Kor Cartographer is just bad (a strictly worse Solemn Simulacrum besides adding 1 white mana symbol for devotion).
Springleaf Drum is pretty much a worse Mind Stone (or a Talisman) outside of "Affinity" (which have 0-mana creatures to activate it quickly).

I play mono white devotion also, but my version uses a lot more graveyard interaction with Sun Titan.
4 Flagstones of Trokair

Ive been looking at a few replacements (ie borderposts and knights) and probably will cut the field wipes and some other junk.
Really approve of your list!
#Gideon of the Trials - pretty obvious as a 3-mana powerful PW that helps with devotion, I can see it replacing the 2nd Elspeth in my build.

I'm not sure about using cards like Secure the Wastes and Walking Ballista in the deck as payoffs here as they don't help build devotion and can't always stabilize the game.
Also no Thalia's Lancers seems a bit surprising give how good it is in a deck like this.
I don't really like the maindeck Nevermore (not even Runed Halo/Gideon's Intervention or Story Circle) as well.

It doesn't have anything to do with devotion though (like Walking Ballista and Secure the Wastes).
Best 3-drops for the deck are probably: Gideon, Brimaz, Finks and Reckoner/Crusader.
Runed Halo is probably the best 2-drop option besides Knight.
