@PorousBoat: I did read through the old primer, and here's my thoughts on Sigarda's Aid from having played ~8 matches with it: you're mostly right. Drawing multiples sucks. Having it on the battlefield on turn 3/4 (after a bunch of equipment is already there) also sucks. But what doesn't suck is the threat of having 3 open mana and a Sword of X and Y in hand, and it's the opponent's combat step and they aren't sure what I may do. Granted, that only happened once or twice in all ~20 of my games, but it was pretty awesome nevertheless. I really want to combine Puresteel Paladin's equip for 0 clause and Leonin Shikari's equip as an instant clause to make some really weird blocking scenarios, but I don't know if that's something that would ever work out like we'd want it to. Theoretically; someone attempts to Path a Puresteel and I can freely attach a Sword of War and Peace in response, negating it.
In reality though, I lost all my matches against Tron because I was too slow to kill the opponent before he got a Titan out or Wurmcoil Engine, and I was too slow against mono-red burn too, so I'll probably gravitate towards something more like your list; dropping Sigarda's Aid and probably adding some Kor Duelists and Strength of Arms. I want to keep all the janky Sword of X and Y, but that's mostly because they were so expensive to buy in paper. The Sword of Feast and Famine is really awesome due to the untap effect, I really made the most of it in my matches. I would highly recommend either the UR or WR sword in the main, if not the sideboard, because against red decks it absolutely wrecks face. I went up against Goblins and it allowed my equipped Puresteel to swing right through. Not to mention the card draw is often amazing (from the UR one).
Speaking of Kaladesh cards, the U-cost counterspell for all colourless spells (Ceremonious Rejection) makes me tempted to splash blue for things like Thoughtcast and Ensoul Artifact, but I think that's probably taking away from the main theme of the deck a little too much. Though it sure as hell would be cool to have 5/5 Swords swinging in by themselves.
@maplesmall
You have no idea how much I feel you on the swords being expensive in paper thing... :/
Otherwise, yeah, I agree with you on almost all points. I was very excited for Sigarda's Aid when it was first spoiled, but was then thoroughly disappointed when I realized how much better the deck is without it. Our best bet is to just be fast and resilient. That's pretty much all we've got going for us (that sounds a lot more damning than it is).
Any thoughts on splashing blue for Thoughtcast and Ensoul Artifact? I guess Reshape could work too, if we ever needed a particular equipment on the field.
Oh, another thing I didn't mention was that I switched Ghost Quarter for Inkmoth Nexus, in order to make up any creature shortfalls, and because Infect only has to go to 10. However I think, counter-intuitively, that Blinkmoth Nexus is better. By the time I had spare mana to use on Inkmoth, I'd probably already done 5-8 damage to the opponent, and a flyer without infect was more valuable to me to avoid evasion and to just keep applying damage. I just wish I'd known this before buying the more expensive of the two lands...
Bearing that in mind, this is what I'm testing on XMage:
For mainboard, I'm keeping the Loxodon Hammer because trample is useful, as is lifelink, and putting it on Kor Duelist seems hilarious. Basilisk Collar is a one-of for the insane combo with Mortarpod, being able to ping any one creature you wish. The best part is the equipment stays around, so if you have a Puresteel, just equip Mortarpod and Basilisk Collar to all your Germs one by one and pick off all your opponent's stuff. I'll see how this works out, being more creature-light than the OP. I don't have Vault Skirge, but that's what the Blinkmoth is for. If I end up being too slow due to having to pay Equip costs too often, I'll probably have to bring in a few Auriok Steelshapers.
I like that list actually. Please do report back with how it works out.
So far, how do you feel about equipments falling off the manland when it reverts back into a land? Is that an issue? Do you think Steelshaper would help with that?
Also, if you play no GQs, how do you plan on handling the matchups where they're good? Tron? R/G Breach? You should at least look into running 2-3 in the board. I honestly think 4 Leyline of Sanctity is overkill when you're already running 2-4 Kor Firewalker. Rest in Peace is the better card in this case I'd say.
On a final note, Vault Skirge is amazing against chump blockers. The only time it fails is against Lingering Souls, which happens rarely enough that I'm willing to cut my losses on that one. Plus, you can always shoot those spirits with Mortarpod!
Yep, I'll definitely report back with that. Equipment falling off manlands is fine if you have a Puresteel on the board. I wouldn't activate a manland without a Puresteel around, probably.
I completely forgot Ghost Quarter dealt with Tron; that was silly of me. I may replace two Leylines with two GQ, since Tron is a real pain. And I may replace the other two Leylines with Rest in Peace, since you're right that Kor Firewalker goes up against mostly the same matchups.
True for Vault Skirge. I'll give my list a shot without it and Auriok Steelshaper and see how it goes (with the GQ sideboard change though).
Sounds good in my books. The more testing that gets done, the more I can elaborate in the OP, and the better the deck will be. Thank you very much for choosing this deck out of the hundreds out there!
Well, I went up against mono-red burn and Mardu tokens, both losses. This deck does not do well against removal, really, even with Kor Firewalkers. Having all our creatures blown out before equipping them sucks. What also sucks is not having Sigarda's Aid to negate equip costs, which, once my Puresteel Paladins get Bolt'ed, have to be paid. Then again, it doesn't matter all that much since there usually aren't any creatures left to equip anyway...
On the other hand, I got to swing in with a Kor Duelist wielding a Sword of Feast and Famine, and having the damage triggers happen twice and forcing opponent to discard twice was pretty sweet. So far Kor Duelist is the MVP in terms of new additions.
Hey I skimmed the forum and didn't see any talk on mox opal. The addition would force you to most likely increase dark steel citadel to 4 copies, but in theory it could speed the deck up.
Also, what about monastery mentor? He is very slow for what this deck is trying to do, but he would help with removal spell weakness of the deck and could easily end the game if you I tap with him. The tokens also work nicely with mortar pod.
I have no experience with the deck, just some thoughts

The deck you're probably looking for is Cheeri0s. It is also a cool deck. They are running Opal, and some versions have used Mentor. They may have moved past Mentor, I don't know the currently accepted best practices. This is not to say that Puresteel aggro cannot ever run these cards, but that a deck which uses them best will probably look more like Cheeri0s.
So I kinda regressed and added back Sigarda's Aid to my deck. It just feels better to me; being able to avoid equip costs is huge and speeds everything up a lot. I also added a few Leonin Shikari for instant speed equip shenanigans. This is probably what I'll be running at my pptq this Saturday:
I still get a lot of wins/damage from Mortarpod and constantly equipping him to creatures to ping down tokens/life totals. Kor Duelist is amazing. I haven't used the Blinkmoth ability yet so I may switch a few of those for Ghost Quarters. Aura of Silence won me a game against a GW enchantment deck. Overall... it just feels faster with Sigarda's Aid. I know it's not strictly optimal, but without it I was burdened with equip costs so often. Sure there's Auriok Steelshaper but he only reduces them by 1, and doesn't allow flash/instant speed shenanigans, and is more easily removed than an enchantment.
PPTQ report: I went 2-3 overall. I lost against Affinity, Naya Eldritch Evolution and Bant Eldrazi. Affinity was just quicker than me in two games. The other two had removal, which is kinda the death of this deck. I won against a weird Blue Tron deck and against a Goryo's Vengeance brew that never really fired. The deck didn't have Leonin Shikari since the store I go to didn't have them in stock after all. I put a Sword of War and Peace in the sideboard to have pro-white, but was never able to equip it in time to stop my creatures from getting Path'ed. I also switched out two Blinkmoths for two Ghost Quarters.
Thoughts:
Sigarda's Aid continues to be good. I know, it's bad in multiples, but it saves on equip costs and the swords basically become protection spells. Combat trickery is a thing with this.
Kor Duelist is nuts. Easily the best card to equip stuff to.
Basilisk Collar and Loxodon Warhammer are my least used cards. Partially because they're 1-ofs, but also because when I have the option to cast them, I usually want to cast something else instead. They don't have the brutal consequences of a Sword of X and Y, nor the low equip costs of Bonesplitter or Bone Saw.
Bone Saw and Puresteel Paladin are best friends. It's basically 'draw a card for free'.
I continue to dream of the Basilisk Collar+Mortarpod combo, pinging away other creatures. Hasn't happened yet. Starting to think it never will.
Ghost Quarter was good against the Tron deck, so I'm glad I put those in. Never used a Blinkmoth yet, so keeping it as a 1-of is probably the right thing.
A few opponents mentioned cards like Gods Willing and Boros Charm to provide protection against Paths and indestructibility. Splashing red would be interesting; the Charm is the main payoff but could also consider Boros Swiftblade and Viashino Slaughtermaster (for pure double strike). Or heck, Shrapnel Blast.
What does everyone think of the new Kaladesh spoiler?

At the beginning of combat on your turn, if you control an artifact, ~ gets +2/+1 until end of turn. If you control three or more artifacts, ~gains first strike until end of turn.
Rare
It's a 3/2 potential first striker for one, and it doesn't compete for equipment. I think if we added this, we'd have to replace either Vault Skirge or Auriok steelshaper, considering how small the soldier count becomes otherwise.
I haven't fully decided if I prefer to have Infiltration Lens replace Bonesplitter or Flayer Husk but I feel like replacing Bonesplitter is best, even if it slightly reduces the number of possible turn 3 wins in a vacuum. I've been pretty happy with how the card works. It functions much more as a damage pusher, which is great against decks that chump a lot or sacrifice before combat damage (e.g., RG Breach). It's also been pretty cool in games where the opponent is forced to block to avoid lethal because I then draw into more things.
Man, I have to admit. Infiltration Lens looks really sweet in some matchups. I am wholly sold on running something like 1-2 in the main and 1-2 in the side if your meta calls for it.
Sigarda's Aid at 3 is magic. I played with more Collar and protection.
Steelshaper was a nobo. It doesn't buff SHO, Gaveleer or Vault Skirge. Swapped for Shakiri, magic with Aid. Lots of shell game shenanigans.
I tested Thopter combo. 3 foundry 2 sword. So sweet.
Also tested Puresteel Storm with myth realized and monastery mentor (+gaveleer),
4 flayer husk
4 toolcraft exemplar
4 goblin gaveleer
4 puresteel paladin
Will be my creature core once it's legal.
The problem with Toolcraft Exemplar is that it fights for the same slots as Kor Duelist and Vault Skirge all the while being worse than both. Same goes for Inventor's Apprentice. Glint-nest Crane requires a blue splash, which could work but requires a much grindier gameplan. It's worth exploring though.
I've explained this many times before. Sword is only a 2-of because it's sided out in matchups where it doesn't benefit you. We don't want to over-saturate the deck with 3 different swords because it would remove redundancy. In general, Fire and Ice is worse because a sword is a very bad play against a blue deck. Our main strategy against for instance UWR Control/Midrange/Nahiri is to go under them; Sword of Fire and Ice doesn't help with that.
I strongly recommend reading through the old thread. I've explained this further there.
Are we interested in the new Artificer's Goggles? It comes down early, can attach for free to stonehaven and (if we want it) toolcraft exemplar, and makes most of our guys bolt proof

Hey guys, this is my first time posting to MTG Salvation so if I format my post the wrong way, forgive me. I'd like to thank PorousBoat for the Puresteel inspiration. I've been lurking in both the old and new primer for about a week, researching and deciding if this is a deck I want to buy and play. I've got a list that I like the looks of but I would appreciate some constructive criticism and feedback. I follow PorousBoat's deck list pretty closely while tuning slightly to my local meta. Here's my list:
Creatures:
x4 Puresteel Paladin
x4 Auriok Steelshaper
x4 Stone Haven Outfitter
x4 Vault Skirge
x4 Kor Duelist
Instant/Sorcery:
x4 Steelshaper's Gift
x4 Brave the Elements
x4 Dispatch
Equipment:
x4 Flayer Husk
x4 Bonesplitter
x2 Mortarpod
x1 Sword of Feast and Famine
x1 Sword of War and Peace
I would cut Steelshaper's Gift in favor of Bone Saw. Bone Saw just does so much work in the deck that you can't not run it. Brave the Elements is an ok card to run. I'm personally not too into the idea of running combat tricks in favor of PtE, but if that's something you want to try I won't stop you.
I'd also highly recommend looking into a sideboard. They can be very effective on the cheap. It could look something like this:
What do you think about my sword selection? My local meta features (like most modern meta) a wide selection of removal, so I thought the Sword protections would be relevant, especially considering the stacking effects on a Kor Duelist.
Yeah, running a 1-1 split is fine. You could also keep a few Steelshaper's Gift in the board and side them in as virtual copies 2-4 of one of the swords while you side out the other.
I chose Gift for that very reason, being able to tutor a relevant protection when necessary and going for that extra damage and triggered effect to put my opponent in a bad spot or turn the corner if I'm behind. If I can pick your brain a bit, what do you think this deck's potential is in a multiplayer setting?
