Just 5-0ed the first modern competitive league I've joined :D. It was pretty smooth sailing. I decided to buy into MTGO so I could practice the deck whenever I wanted so I could get ready for the open. BTW, anyone have advice on how to not spend anymore money on MTGO and just use league and challenge prizes to make more decks? I don't really understand the system but I would assume I can turn my prizes into other modern decks.
(2-1) Bridgevine
I recognized the deck as I had just been looking at it the day before. My opponent stumbled because I cheesed them with a Chalice on zero to cut off bridge from below. I won from there with multiple thought-knots. Game 2 he just had too much and I kept drawing lands. Game 3 came down to the wire, he had 2 vengevines in the grave but kept whiffing while I just kept drawing gas after the board stalled a bit.
(2-0) Grixis Death's Shadow
Won game 1 off of no blockers from my opponent with two scourges pinging them. I dropped the chalice the turn before I won and shut them down, would've had me next turn cuz my opponent had the shadow and battle rage along with a bolt. Game 2 I had turn two thought-knot and stripped a kiln fiend which was there only creature. They didn't draw anything the rest of the game while I beat them down.
(2-0) Skred
Turn 1 Scourge off of temple and guide. They couldn't deal with it. Game 2 same thing except I had to play around them exiling my scourges and keeping me from killing two Sarkhans in a row. Was holding up dismember all game and nabbed the Glorybringer and swung in uninterrupted. Not sure if I should keep chalice. Skred and Bolt aren't really worrisome but Relic doesn't do much either besides draw a card. I can't remember what I sided in and out. Idk if removing mimics is the right call either. It's a game that can go either way I assume and the dragons threw me off cuz that's not traditional skred.
(2-0) Bogles
Hell yeah, auto win baby. Game 1 turn one chalice on the play, they had nothing but a spiritdancer and I wailed on them. Game 2 I bring in 4 ratchet bombs to go with the chalices and smush them. They get underneath chalice and disenchant it. They get low on cards with no real pressure so I chalice on two to stop their money enchantments and just keep swinging over and over til I won.
(2-0) UW control
Got off scourge early and we kept trading resources til we were at 20 and 18 life and low on cards. I drew manlands and finished him off super slow through two jaces. Almost lost because I knew they had entreat the angels and they brainstormed with Jace. I was holding up ghost quarter for collonade all day and almost tapped out for something else before I realized I need to shuffle their deck. They didn't decline the shuffle so I assume they either didn't do it or didn't realize. Game 2 I got an early mimic down and my opponent kept a hand with two teferis and removal. I spyglassed them and shut off teferi and for some reason they decline to field of ruin my temple so I slow rolled a smasher until I knew it was safe. They dealt with my first smasher and copter so I just sandbagged another smasher i drew all game and took the slow plays. This is something I've learned to do against control. Just keeping attacking and passing don't run anything into counter magic. Playing burn has helped me understand this a lot. Anyways, they tap out for teferi even though they can't use them and I cast smasher and swing for 10 for exactsies. No idea, guess the opponent assumed I had nothing. They weren't playing lands so I assume they were drawing action but whatever. Just happy with my finish
The more and more I play this deck, the more I realize Eternal Scourge is broken. Beating control decks with one freaking creature is insane. Honestly, if I ever decide to get into legacy I'll probably jam this list with more sol lands and see what it can do. With as much interaction as there is in legacy I assume scourge would be great but the players I've talked to aren't sure. Oh well, one day I'll try.
Do you guys mind sharing your lists? I'm a long-time MTGO E&T player (both Chalice/Simian and Vial versions), but am frankly tired of being steamrolled by the onslaught of Bant Spirits/Humans/Creature Collected Toolbox that seems to be popping up everywhere now.
Am trying to learn the ropes on this deck just for change of pace and scenery, but would also love you guys's thoughts on how this deck performs vs Humans/Bant etc. I understand this deck is much more aggro than the traditional E&T versions and have been reading up on Jordan's various primers.
I've actually been doing Open Play (def not ready to put tickets and Play Points on the line yet) with the Jordan SCG Classic list (Chalice/SSG main) except it runs mountains so I can have access to sideboard options like Anger of the Gods, Shattering Spree, and good old bolt. Mana base is basically:
@vhfforever and @ChaoticTyrant, do you guys mind sharing your lists?
I've been running 73/75 of Jordan's most recent list here. I cut one Matter Reshaper and 1 Zhalfiran Void for one copy each of Phyrexian Metamorph and Cavern of Souls. My SB is the same 15 at the moment, but I usually play around with the number of Ratchet Bombs and the 3rd copy of Gemstone Caverns, sometimes going down to 3 each to add in other options like Endbringer or additional Spatial Contortions.
Humans is a fine matchup, but far from a runaway on both sides. I've never had much of an issue with Bant Spirits, because the Eldrazi are typically larger than them when it comes into the combat zone. All of them having evasion is annoying, but since they're (generally) smaller, it's a bit easier.
I don't personally like the red. Consistent and reliable access to the creatures and spells requiring Wingdings mana is a priority for me, and I can't see how only running 8 fixed red sources in the deck gives you a reliable change to cast Anger of the Gods. Spatial Contortion is like a lightning bolt that can giant growth your Reality Smasher, and Ratchet Bomb may be a little slower, but is infinitely easier to cast than AotG.
Also, I updated my previous post with the three PPTQ's I've been to so far this season.
Lost in Top 4 of a 7-round ~70-person PPTQ yesterday.
Round 1 vs Zoo/Burn hybrid:
Game 1 Chalice on 1 shuts off his hand. Much of the same Game 2.
2-0, 1-0
Round 2 vs Mono Red Goblins:
Chalice was again huge here, as most of his creatures were CMC 1. Easy victory in both games.
2-0, 2-0
Round 3 vs Pyro Prison:
Eternal Scourge was the all star here. His Anger of the Gods exiled 2 Scourges and I eventually overwhelmed him as he couldn't find a Bridge in either game.
2-0, 3-0
Round 4 vs Humans:
Absolutely miserable matchup. Got run over twice. My Chalices are useless when he gets a Vial down on 1 and has Cavern of Souls.
0-2, 3-1
Round 5 vs Infect:
Did I mention how good Chalice is? It shut off the majority of his pump spells in both games. Easy victory.
2-0, 4-1
Round 6 vs Hollow One:
Chalice on 1 was big in Game 1. He didn't have a typical broken Hollow One opening, so it was more of a grindfest which I won with Reality Smashers. Game 2 I mulligan down to a hand with Surgical and Relic of Progenitus. I Surgical his Faithless Lootings early and it's smooth sailing from there.
2-0, 5-1
Round 7 vs Storm:
I'm in 4th after round 6 so I'm able to ID into Top 8.
ID, 5-1-1
Quarterfinals vs Jeskai Control:
Eternal Scourge is just great against Control. As is Smasher. Got him low on life in Game 1 before he cast Supreme Verdict. Had a follow up Smasher for the win. Game 2 I get a Spyglass on Teferi and have Ghost Quarter to blow up his blocking Colonnades.
2-0, 6-1-1
Semifinals vs Humans:
Yeah, this matchup is just so bad. Get run over again.
0-2, 6-2-1
Overall, the deck was great. All my wins were 2-0, and my two losses of the day were to Humans. The matchup feels impossible, really. I'm not sure how to even begin to fix it. A few friends suggested Walking Ballista + Basilisk Collar in the board, which could work. I run Ratchet Bomb but it's too slow. Just at a loss for how to approach this matchup, really.
I'll probably trim the Gut Shot and maybe a Spyglass/Bomb for 2 Ballista and go from there. If anyone else has any ideas or can share their Humans success stories, I'm all ears.

I've played against Humans a number of times (more than 5, less than 10, somewhere in that region), and the games are always close. When I play I usually board in all the kill from the SB (for me right now it's 4 Ratchet Bomb, 2 Contortion, 2 Gut Shot, though for a while I was also running an Endbringer which gives them fits) and the Chalice + SSG package comes out. I keep Bomb one under their Vial and only pop it when their creatures begin to outsize mine, and my primary concern comes in the form of being able to kill Mantis Rider. Kill Champion with Gut Shot whenever possible but try to not get tricked into paying two life only to see something flashed/vial'd in response.
Granted, I have had 0 games against humans post-Bugeler, so the additional grindy card may skew the match more than it previously was. I play it out very similar to the BGx matches where you just try to answer them threat for threat and rely on bigger creatures.
the card itself really isn't worth the card board its printed on...does it serve a purpose? Sure its a blue 1 drop that might not be a 1/1. I would not put it in a list and expect to win a PTQ or GP though.
I'll admit my experience against the deck is limited to those two matches yesterday, but it didn't feel winnable at all. Reflector Mage is so annoying, especially when we have a bunch of 4-ofs in the creature slot. Meddling Mage is also annoying. Vial is just stupid. At least I know I boarded properly by taking out Chalices + Guides, but the Ratchet Bombs always felt too slow. Their guys just grew way too quickly and once I fell behind there was no chance of recovering. I wish there was a viable sweeper for this deck, but it appears you've at least had success with spot removal.

You are just bad. Practice and you will start beating them. Modern is all about reps.

The only real "sweeper" spell is All is Dust, and that's generally a pretty poor SB card (though I admit I do have one in my foil colorless pile for the days I feel like kicking all the kids out of the pool). But, as brusque as the response is, it isn't incorrect. The humans match is all about repetition, properly assessing the threats and hoping they line up well against your removal. Certain draws on both sides of the match and result in blowouts, it's just theirs seem more overwhelming because their board-state goes so wide to win.
I thought of All Is Dust as well, but it seemed kinda slow. I will definitely put in the reps. Perhaps I just was on the wrong end of the blowout draw.
Humans is hard even with practice. Not so hard like bridgedecks or maybe affinity and boggles (for me)...but really hard like elves (which i prefere over humans)
Not so hard like bridgedecks or maybe affinity and boggles (for me)...
We have had very different experiences with Affinity and Bogles, then. I've yet to drop a match to Bogles (small sample, but minimum 5/0) and only ever lost o e set to Affinity (many more games against that one). A Chalice on 1 shuts down almost everything Bogles does save 9 cards, and only 5 of those function without another Enchantment, and RBomb out of the board cleans everything else up. Affinity is tricky in game one, but there's lots of good things to bring in for the next two.
Ensnaring Bridge, now, that's entirely different problem.
Edit: I guess Monday is becoming upgrade piece mail day. While not specific to SPE, it's the deck these are going in. 4 new SSGs and I was finally able to complete my original set of GQs by finding a fourth.
I see that Endless One has fallen out of a lot of the lists here (the ones based on Jordan's latest list in any case). Is Matter Reshaper just that much better at this point due to the card advantage he offers?

the reason is easy. Because i dont use chalice. In humans this doesnt matter but vs. Bogles and affinity
Yeah sure it won a lot games, but its more difficult to See which games you lost because no relic or not enough creatures because of chalice. But lets not begin this Diskussion again. Everyone should play how he will

I feel like that's easy to see if you keep any information on your deck. Look to see where you're winning post sideboard over pre sideboard when relic comes in.

Well, yeah, then. The match against those two is infinitely more difficult in the match if you don't have a card that swings the entire game in your favor and forces them to find limited outs. I just prefer MD Chalice for these types of games. Relic does very little in game in in a majority of matches that couldn't also me accomplished by Scavenger Grounds, and Chalice cuts the legs out of so many other decks in game one I have only once considered going without it.
No jokes, but after quite a few matches with this deck I'm starting to think in the same direction about chalice. I see myself siding out chalice more and more. Yes, there's some chance chalice is a free win (or close to a free win), but in 2/3 cases it does almost nothing and is boarded out.
I'm starting to think about moving chalices to the board, but I'm not yet sure what I want to bring in instead. Probably, 2-4 SCGs have to go out as well once chalice is out.
Also, my thoughts on matchups discussed above. I have no problem fighting affinity; humans are a bit trickier but certainly manageable.
I'm, however, struggling to beat any grindy/value/CoCo green-whites and even CoCo humans version which is played at my LGS. Not sure what is the solution, to be honest.
Moving Chalice and SSG out lets you have room for Endless One and Relic in the main, those aren't terrible at outsizing your opponents creatures but difficult if you're constantly casting them into Reflector Mage. I've had great success with my singleton Phyrexian Metamorph, to the point where I've often thought about going up to 2, so it's something to consider as well.
Torpor Orb, while it cripples TKS and turns it into a 4/4 with only downside, is a good bring in against Humans.

I don't feel Humans is a problem if they don't have multiple reflector / rider draw. CoCo decks, on the other hand, seem problematic because they are good and stalling until they resolve (multiple) CoCo and combo finish / outgrind you.
Metamorph tech seems sweet. Would you kindly share details on it? Which matches do you bring (or leave) it in, what do you usually copy? Willing to try it this week. Thanks.
