What about War's Toll to you know completely crush their hopes
Why would wars toll crush their hopes? To me it just looks like it makes them cast everything at once and at sorcery speed. Thats nice, but im not sure it cripples them enough for four mana...

I do admit at four mana its dicy but forcing your opponent to play at sorcery speed is quite crippling
Maybe its just too high in cost for not enough but i think it deserves a little testing
Hi! Im working on something like that: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/pyropox-2/ I resigned Loams in favor of a most cohesive manabase, prioritizing discard and land destruction on the early meanwhile pushing with young pyro and bloodghast. I have to test it consciously to arrive to any conclusion, but this thread was for sure inspirational.
Aside from that - I think this deck is well positioned right now against the big mana decks. The aggro decks that come with that meta shift is the other side of the story and not a happy one unless you are running bolts and smallpoxes.

Thanks! I love this deck - it can be quite competitive, and I think it is a great meta call right now with people mostly playing decks that play very few lands, or playing big mana decks.
The only decks I would be slightly worried about are decks with a lot of weenies that tap for mana. Elves and CoCo decks. Chalice and damnation are good here.
Not sure how affinity would go, I think the removal in the deck can handle the matchup though. Trinisphere is sure to put a hurt'n on the deck and post board Chalice and stony will undo them (in theory).

oh man against affinity trinisphere would be absolutely devastating. I am unsure of the direction I want to go with the meta way it is now and between this deck and an Esper control I am torn. There was a build of Esper that did well yesterday or something on mtgo against like 90% Eldrazi so that is one of the reasons I am considering it, but have you tested a bunch of matches against Eldrazi yet with this deck?

Freshly Brewed last night, so not yet. I'll probably take this to FNM this week, maybe another tournament on Tuesday.
I have tested with similar decks quite a bit in the past and they tend to do well based on the meta. I never really fully developed the ideas I had, and I am looking to do that now that it seems the strategy is in demand.
Somebody has to punish the mana-greed! Decks looking to run as few lands as possible and those looking to ramp into big mana would both be hurt badly by this deck.
Like I said, the CoCo decks would probably be the toughest to deal with. Perhaps some anger of the gods instead of damnation.

I think I actually like Anger over Damnation right now because it comes down a turn earlier, exiles, and hits most of the relevant dudes anyhow at 3 damage. I'll take this and try to jam some matches with it on cockatrice or something and see what happens

might be making a oomeback to the game, and I was tinkering with a similar idea last time i played regularly... namely I wanted to abuse crack the earth and smallpox. One of the best successes I've had personally with crack the earth is Young Pyromancer. Especially if you're able to get this online early in the game, every time you cast crack the earth, pyro provides a very conveniently timed permanent for you destroy, effectively leaving your board unchanged while your opponent suffers a tempo loss. He's a little less effective with smallpox, but there are a few cool plays you can make. for example with pyro, bloodghast, and flagstones of trokair on the board you're creating a token, fetching a replacement land, and resurrecting your ghast. just my 2 cents, but pyro seems like a better option than the blizzard-herder... as you could theoretically advance your board while destroying your opponents'.
i've also seen vampiric rites mentioned which i think is some cool tech when you're playing with token generators. also boom//bust is really cool tech - one of the reasons i've always loved pox in legacy is the power of sinkhole, and i imagine this is about as close as it gets in modern.

Crack the Earth and Smallpox have had my brain going for years now... Everytime I return to the deck it gets a little bit better.
Young Pyromancer is a card I have considered many times, and have yet to test. The main reason I have passed on it is because of the current focus I have on Land Destruction. I want to have as much LD as humanly possible in the deck, and Young Pyromancer doesn't help lock people out - it is a value engine that doubles as a win condition. Because of the lack of really good pox cards, the deck has very little room for this right now, so I tend to choose bloodghast as my value engine to combine with Crack and Pox effects because it is much much more resilient. YP dies to everything, and I have no way to protect it in LD pox. Bloodghast just keeps coming back for more.
Akki Blizzard-Herder is just a re-curable Boom // Bust (with kolaghan's command and Mortuary Mire) and it doubles as a wall that opponents never want to attack into. Currently I am looking for a re-usable way to get creatures back from the grave - anyone know the best option to keep re-using Akki and Fulminator?
Flagstones of Trokair is another card I have always considered and wanted to use, but I also have not yet tested. I am hesitant to warp the manabase for this particular value engine, but the more I brew the more appealing it looks. After I acquire a few more Godless Shrines I will be giving the following a try. Flagstones has too much synergy with all my symmetrical pox spells to ignore - Crack the Earth, Smallpox, Akki Blizzard-Herder, and Boom // Bust.
Legacy:B The Gate // B Pox Modern:RGB Dredge // RBG Goblins // B The Gate // UBR Tezz AoB Control // RBG Prison Pox EDH:RBU Thraximundar // R Norin the Wary // RWB Kaalia of the Vast // BUR Grixis Combos // BU Gisa and Geralf Tribal Tiny Leaders:BUW Sydri, Galvanic Genius // R Feldon of the Third Path
i wouldn't go out of your way to force flagstones - it's nice if you're in those colors, and my deck is pretty squarely in mardu colors, as I tend to focus more on value cards than straight LD. I enjoy the Smallpox / Liliana of the Veil / Lingering Souls interaction far too much to not include. I think my direction is probably closer to tempo than a true prison style, though I do love a good prison deck... have since Turbostasis was a thing

Yeah I am not sure, the mana could be clunky, but it might not - only testing will tell. As long as the mana is workable I think the value from flagstones will be worth it. Still just preliminary thinking on the deck...
I figure that as long as I can grab a godless shrine with flagstones I am doing well, including the foundry and plains just as extra to round out the white sources.

Perhaps I should just jam a goblin dark dwellers lol, but it doesn't work well with anything other than kolaghans Command and Boom // Bust - and what if I have creatures to deal with... The Bust part makes it difficult to followup with more plays - it is "all in." For 5cmc I think I like Siege better.

Doing some initial testing of the deck I never wanted to draw multiples of my lock and utility pieces, so I am considering running 1 of each of the following:
I can't even begin to imagine what most decks are going to sideboard - depending on which "pieces" they see game one, they might go all in on something like artifact hate and then lose to something else game 2. I think go wide decks like elves, goblins, and CoCo are going to be the toughest matches, hoping to shore those with the SB.
Sometimes finding a win condition can be tough. Trinisphere has been the best lock piece so far, but drawing two kinda sucks. It allows me to attack with my creatures instead of immediately blowing them up to hit lands. Is it worth it to run 2-3 and take my chances?
MD chalice seems like it could solve a lot of problems, but bolt and crack are pretty essential Game 1 imo.

2x Engineered Explosives
3x Bloodchief Ascension
3x Stony Silence
3x Anger of the Gods
Flagstones lets me make room in the deck by removing bloodghasts to sac for crack, and doubles as the best Boom target!
Edit - added bloodghast as 1x back in. I think I need him as a win condition and sac outlet for pox and crack.

Seems like a sweet deck man
"If it was easy, everyone would do it."
An admittedly late-game card, and 5 mana is a lot for a deck like yours, but there's always Palace siege. Either mode is relevant.
Off the top of my head, Athreos, God of Passage, Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, Midnight Recovery and the aforementioned Palace Siege, but they all have downsides. Palace Siege is the least-conditional, but at 5 CMC, it's going to take a while to get online.
Athreos is cool too, but not good enough I think due to the options he presents, and the timing.
Alesha is interesting.... hrmmm
What I would do for a Phyrexian Reclamation...

Helps mitigate the poxing, and provides an opportunity to keep re-using utility lands.
Ghost Quarter is an obvious option
Mortuary mire
Flagstones of Trokair
