Has anyone tried playing Vampires as a slightly more midrange deck taking advantage of cards like Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Champion of Dusk or the sorin planeswalkers sorin, solemn visitor and Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. They fill up the board themselves, but I guess the issue with them is that they do too little too late. The deck is slower than other aggro decks already without interuption. I'm just finding that while the lords are great, it's very hard to keep them alive. I wondered if upping the disruption and the curve a little for power might help with that. After turn 3 cards like Vampire cutthroat and Vampire lacerator are basically dead cards unless you're playing against a creatureless deck with no answers in hand. Love to know any vampire veterans' thoughts.
I feel like Sorin is a better choice than any 5 drop. We have lords available to us to buff vamps. I posted some lists with sorin a while back when Ixalan came out I believe. You just can't play 5 drop creatures in modern without some kind of ramp or something. That 5 drop that causes you to lose life and draw cards will just kill you against aggro decks and burn.
Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord was just spoiled for M20. Does this help our list? Definitely looks like the most significant vampire card to hit modern in a while. Click on the card link or check out the most recent spoilers on the mtgsalvation welcome page.
Starting at 4 loyalty and the ability to loop Bloodghast, not too shabby. Built in burn protection. Can help us stay aggressive with the counters and deathtouch. This could be the thing we need to push us over the top eh?
Okay, Vampire Lacerator and Dusk Legion Zealot paired up with Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord is great. Still have gifted Aetherborn to fall back on with life gain. I believe the deathtouch from sorin will help us push through midrange/aggro creature decks. Not too mention the +1/+1 counter. Add to that an additional way in which to push through straight damage to the life total. Omg! Plus it comes in with 4 loyalty counters at 3 mana, going up to 5? I had to double check right there!
Mono black vampires with nocturnus at top curve was my first modern deck.
The has a high potential and a list with aristocrat style done 5:0 in a modern league!
Will test it today..
Maybe something could be done with Chancellor of the Dross + Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord ?
It may be considered as the Creeping Chills we don't want to hardcast in Dredge, that we can discard to another spell for value (vampire or noncreature), and eventually cheat into play with a topdeck Sorin. All of that on top of a very aggro shell to make sense off turn 0 life drains.
That's the most timmy thing I can think of right now. Cheating Nocturnus into play is good too and realistically hardcastable though, probably the best bet so far !
I think the knight is absolutely crazy. Turning into a 4/5 for 3 mana anytime after turn 3 land? Ok thx. With lacerator I can say him pinging us for 1, then a sac and shock losing 4 life could come up pretty often turn 2 naturally.
We also just got a 1/1 lifelink, deathtough for B. Sup goyf.
I think both of these guys are good. Especially the knight, in vial builds, turn 3 swing with him seems hilarious. (extra mana)
I have been using lacerator and was tired of losing 7 life per game from him, so ill easily make the switch to this dood.
Im thinking ill make a new vampires primer when I get back home (on vacation currently).

Ive been playing mardu vampires with vial, and its working rlly well. Being able to turn 3 sorin into nocturnus, or helix cycle bloodghast or even pump and get some life with a random vamp seems great.
These 2 new 1 drops, cordial vampire and finally Sorin just made Vamps a real threat again I think. If we had a kitesail freebooter kind of vampire released, Id say vamps is now a tier 2 deck honestly.
Ive been playing vamps since zendikar and trying to make the work n modern since it came out as a format. Super happy to see we are finally getting the pieces we need.
It's been quite a while since I even looked at this deck, or even played Modern. I may be a little rusty, but Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord looks like it can do some real work.
Between new Sorin and Kalastria Highborn, we can REALLY start trucking through direct damage while gaining life mid/late game. This deck has a bunch of different "10 life or less cards" in it. Given that, I tried to really focus on a direct damage theme. I think Searing Blaze can help us out quite a bit especially with a Cordial Vampire on the battlefield already.
I'm talking about turn 1 vampire lacerator, turn 2 Cordial Vampire, Turn 3 another 1 drop, plus searing blaze hopefully killing their only blocker, put 3 +1/+1 counters out total, swing in for 5, plus the 3 damage done directly to their face off blaze. By that point they are hopefully at less than 10 life and all of our bloodghasts will have haste.
Dark Confidant to keep us drawing into kalastria highborn, lightning bolt, and sorin, imperious bloodlord in order to finish them off. We can gain a respectable amount of life in this deck hopefully each game. If not, we have 2 possible sac. outlets in Viscera Seer
I've reformed the list after some testing. We want Zealot over Dark Confidant I believe. The synergies are just too good. Vampire Lacerator may be justified as a 4 of with all of the life gain in the deck. Also, we can sacrifice it if we can't afford the life at some point.
I really like lightning bolt so we can get our opponents down to 10 or less asap to give bloodghast haste and stop our lacerator life drain. That combined with Sorin's ability, and kalastria highborn means we can have a very mean aggressive early game, then turn useless creatures into direct damage later on.
I think the mana curve is a bit wonky. I want more 1 drops, but also want some aggressive. Any suggestions?
With all of this direct damage, I'm think blood artist should be considered perhaps. Him plus Viscera seer out can do a lot of damage late game if we still have a bunch of creatures out. Also, we can target him with sornin's ability and basically guarantee a damage getting through one way or another.
This is my current build in Mardu Colours primarily for Legion Lieutenant. I am very much interested in the new Sorin and also Knight of The Ebon Legion especially with a Aether Vial turn one can lead to some really nice three plays.
You guys are making me sad that Nocturnus hasnt been included in any one of these lists yet.
Does anyone run vial? Its go good.
Four mana to maybe pump your team doesn't sound so appealing, wouldn't it be better to play a Sorin that guarantees an anthem effect? However, I do agree vial is one of the best cards for tribal decks like this.
Dont underestimate the game-ending power of +2/+1 and FLYING for the whole team out of nowhere, or even coming down t3 with sorin.
-
I think everyone is severely underrating indulgent aristocrat, Ive won so many games with him.
His threat to make combat math a nightmare is just insane. Also his ability gives 2 +1/+1 counters to the team with cordial out.
Honestly Ill probably run 4 of the ebon knights, and play around with the new lifelink/deathtouch 1/1 vamp, alongside aristocrat. Very scary 1 drops.
-
Cards like grul draz vampire are just not that great, and I dont think we should be running them. Although I am a bigger fan of vampire cutthroat after some testing. Skulk is better than i thought (hes good at racing bigger threats) and the lifelink is very relevant.
vial has been excellent for me, espeically with cards like cordial and aristocrat. Cordial or aristocrat vialed in as a response to removal is usually value-town.
Bob vs. Asylum visitor. Bob is better early and mid game, and asylum is better mid/late game (where she can actually draw cards). Being a 3/1 body is very relevant, any lord makes her hit for 4, and giving a 4/2 first strike is pretty bonkers T3. My version has more lords so Im a fan of visitor.
However, after this sorin came out, I might switch my 3 visitors into bloodghasts, that 2nd +1 from sorin seems tooo good.
-
The games I lose are always because I run out of cards, so visitor makes sense, but bloodghast does too as he is pseudo-card advantage.
Now it seems not many vamp players play with vial, but you will no doubt use sorin and start vomiting your hand onto the feed. You'll need to refill your hand after it gets dumped so visitor still seems like the vamp for the job.
Yesterday I tried it a bit. But tweaked the decklist with new sorins after playing the original list a bunch.
The amazing thing is here that when both are hellbent youre drawing immense amount of cards and pitch them into token with lifegain and you can sac
them for powering up the rest of your team.. there are more powerful things in modern, but I enjoyed the playstyle
Call the Bloodline seems a bit weak, but Sorins makes every card a lightning helix with this. With an active Asylum visitor it's more powerful.
Overall everything is kinda weak on it's own but pretty synergistic.
Added 2 Vampire Nocturnus to steal games with him. But dont want to draw him in multiple cause of the curve
In goldfishing the lethal combat is around turn 4 to turn 6 (with discard) but it's ability is more to grind out than closing games fast
..Only if tidehollow sculler or kitesail freelooter is a vampire..
I like the deck you posted (link) but was not sure about blood artist and asylum visitor. Have you tested it without changes?
My thoughts:
I realized about the synergy of Indulgent aristocrat and cordial Vampire which can be gross, but to work properly need a good amount of vamps in the table.
Also the deck lacks of removal and that sometimes can be an issue (and also removal will benefit to cordial vampire. I was even thinking if using force of dispair as a gross way to deal with aggro decks and win if the overextend a little (this + cordial vampire is nuts!!)
Beside of that I always thought that deathtouch & lifelink vampires are the best ones (moreover if you can recur them) so I'm thinking on using gifted aetherborn and his new friend Vampire of the Dire Moon so you have removal on legs or "unblockable guys", and even better because they are going to grow a lot with cordial and the so.
Finally there is a vamp that I always loved and that works great in madness versions Bloodhall Priest and is a finisher on legs usually when you are hellbent.
Also new Sorin seems awesome on paper. Have to test it, but because hype is probably that it will have more price than it deserves. Hope they print a promo version with a more bautiful art
I would like to test all this things together but not sure how to do it. Perhaps the following list to begin with:
I replaced the 4 blood artist with sorin, imperious bloodlord
You listed him as a 3off. But you can play him as playset. You want him and when you have too much copies you can discard him.
I like Bloodhall Priest. It is maybe better In my Version than the Nocturnus. I want card draw when hellbent and beeing hellbent with call the bloodline and asylum visitor is such a hugh engine (creating many tokens.. for sac and army). Test it. It is maybe too weak on its own pieces, but I liked it a lot. Thats why I put liliana of the veil in my list to force the hellbent for both players (also removal for pushing the die ability of cordial vampire)
In regards of a aether vial lord vampire list... I dont know If its the list I want to play, seem like a weaker version of the other tribal vial decks out there, maybe I m wrong.. didnt test them much.
These are my first standpoints on view of 2 days testing. I`m actually not 100% sure but these are the first conclusions I first think of. Might change later with further testing and brewing / suggestions from other players as well
Oh damn! just realised that bloodhall priest with sorin, imperious bloodlord is so strong.
Definitely before Nocturnus. You +the Sorin for deathtouch and lifelink and Bloodhall priest triggers for damage to creature or player.
With DT you remove every creature that isnt hexproof or shroud. damn nice
I feel like sprrin was the last card needed to make the vampire lords work, as befor this we have had condemned for discard, aristocrat for sac, cordial vamp to take advantage of sac. But the deck was missing another sac outlet and a way to reanimated stuff that's saved or discarded that wasn't bloodghaust. Sorin provides both in for 3 mana with added removal and in a very splashable way.
I think that the core of the deck from now on should look a little like this.
As this contains most of the value engine for the deck. Add on another lord or two (depending on the colors splashed) some unearths (for getting back discarded lords) and some seers for more value, and then go wild with agressive one drops of choice.
There's also an argument for sticking with mono black and taking a smallpox+heavy aristocrats style of play, which could be fun.
I really like your list, probably because its so close to mine lol.
So Silent Clearing has been GREAT so far. I think this land will be a staple for creature decks now in modern. Like I said a few posts ago, we lose because we run out of cards, and clearing helps that. Also activating fatal push in a pinch is nice.
My list before the new vamps and sorin had 4 stromkirk captain and 3 captivating vampire, both of which seem great with unearth, maybe find a way to get captain in there? I guess you're going more small poxy so I can see why you chose against it.
I CANT BELIEVE the week I'm on vacation and going to japan all these vamp cards get released. I have to wait 2 weeks till I can get home and test
Im very surprised Im not seeing more Knights of ebon legions in these lists. Its such a threatening card after turn 3, and a great top deck.
In terms of caverns, I've been running 3-4 with 4 pushes as my only non-creature spell (minus vial) and its worked great. I think you could run 3 no problem.
Oh damn! just realised that bloodhall priest with sorin, imperious bloodlord is so strong.
Definitely before Nocturnus. You +the Sorin for deathtouch and lifelink and Bloodhall priest triggers for damage to creature or player.
With DT you remove every creature that isnt hexproof or shroud. damn nice
If you mean using DT sorin ability before the ETB trigger, I could be wrong but I think you miss the timing for that. For the swing you're absolutely correct.
The synergy does seem cute, the thing I don't like about priest is that you have to have 0 cards for her to do anything besides being a 4 mana 4/4. Ofc you can say Nocturnus is also inconsistent but he CAN take games the turn he comes in.
Sorry for the double post, Im just so excited to have other vamp brewers to theory craft with
T1 vial, t2 2nd land play condemned eot vial in gorger, t3 swing discard stormkirk captain and play it for madness and bash in for 8, vial is still up for 2 if I wanna flash anything else in.
Im going to brew with sorin and the vamps for sure. I'll start by figuring out a) what is my shortest clock to 20 damage going to look like, b) what is the most recursion I can get, and c) what is the most disruptive deck I can make. Then I'll go from there and figure out a good build.
Zombies, humans, and eldrazi can all attack the hand while deploying threats which is critical to the success of those tribes I think. Vamps can't. :/
What do you think about Kalastria Highborn ? Every time I want to activate her ability I don't have enough mana. I think it's only good with a vial in the deck, but I agree with @Farodin666.
In regards of a aether vial lord vampire list... I dont know If its the list I want to play, seem like a weaker version of the other tribal vial decks out there, maybe I m wrong.. didnt test them much.
I prefer the recent 5-0 list, with the discard-madness and the vampire flood-sacrifice synergies.

This build is explosive, but quickly runs out of steam, and if you dont kill them early it can be tough to come back. I also dont like how "essential" condemned is to have in your hand. But you can have some lightning fast kills with the deck.
Although I cant remember if I tested with vial or not, I think that might help push the deck over the limit, even as discard fodder when you draw a 2nd, not sure.
"What do you think about Kalastria Highborn ? Every time I want to activate her ability I don't have enough mana. I think it's only good with a vial in the deck, but I agree with @Farodin666."
Exactly, shes mana intensive, so vial is necessary for her in modern imo. Especially if you run indulgent aristocrat or KotEL or any other mana sinks.
I think kalastria rlly only works well if you build around her, bloodghast, cordial and seer. Ive found she doesnt splash well with the +1/+1 lords, but I havent tested her too much if I'm being honest. For me I run into the problem of not having enough slots in 2 CMC to do everything I want.
Very rough Sorin Aristocrats I put together. I do not really need Red in this deck, except for maybe Insolent Neonate. Oathsworn Vampire I think as a one of might be key, since without much set-up it makes Sorin able to lightning Helix every turn for 2 mana, which is insane value.

What do you guys think about captivating vampire these days? Since stromkirk captain & Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord are just better picks for that slot these days I don't know if there's any room. Especially if you want to run 2-3 vampire nocturnus to curve out the top, like uh, some of us

Oathsworn Vampire I think as a one of might be key, since without much set-up it makes Sorin able to lightning Helix every turn for 2 mana, which is insane value.
